Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Member States intending to introduce a nuclear power programme will need to pass through several phases during the implementation. Experience shows that careful planning of the objectives, roles, responsibilities, interfaces and tasks to be carried out in different phases of a nuclear project is important for success. This publication presents a harmonized approach that may be used to structure the owner/operator management system and establish and manage nuclear projects and their development activities irrespective of the adopted approach. It has been developed from shared management practices and consolidated experiences provided by nuclear project management specialists through a series of workshops and working groups organized by the IAEA. The resultant publication presents a useful framework for the management of nuclear projects from initiation to closeout and captures international best practices.

Book Nuclear Decommissioning

Download or read book Nuclear Decommissioning written by Michele Laraia and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-02-21 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a nuclear installation has reached the end of its safe and economical operational lifetime, the need for its decommissioning arises. Different strategies can be employed for nuclear decommissioning, based on the evaluation of particular hazards and their attendant risks, as well as on the analysis of costs of clean-up and waste management. This allows for decommissioning either soon after permanent shutdown, or perhaps a long time later, the latter course allowing for radioactivity levels to drop in any activated or contaminated components. It is crucial for clear processes and best practices to be applied in decommissioning such installations and sites, particular where any significant health and environmental risks exist. This book critically reviews the nuclear decommissioning processes and technologies applicable to nuclear power plants and other civilian nuclear facilities. Part one focuses on the fundamental planning issues in starting a nuclear decommissioning process, from principles and safety regulations, to financing and project management. Part two covers the execution phase of nuclear decommissioning projects, detailing processes and technologies such as dismantling, decontamination, and radioactive waste management, as well as environmental remediation, site clearance and reuse. Finally, part three details international experience in the decommissioning of nuclear applications, including the main nuclear reactor types and nuclear fuel cycle facilities, as well as small nuclear facilities and legacy nuclear waste sites. Critically reviews nuclear decommissioning processes and technologies applicable to nuclear power plants and other civilian nuclear facilities Discusses the fundamental planning issues in starting a nuclear decommissioning process Considers the execution phase of nuclear decommissioning projects, including dismantling, decontamination, and radioactive waste management, as well as environmental remediation, site clearance and reuse

Book Nuclear Security

Download or read book Nuclear Security written by and published by Hoover Institution Press. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern about the threat posed by nuclear weapons has preoccupied the United States and presidents of the United States since the beginning of the nuclear era. Nuclear Security draws from papers presented at the 2013 meeting of the American Nuclear Society examining worldwide efforts to control nuclear weapons and ensure the safety of the nuclear enterprise of weapons and reactors against catastrophic accidents. The distinguished contributors, all known for their long-standing interest in getting better control of the threats posed by nuclear weapons and reactors, discuss what we can learn from past successes and failures and attempt to identify the key ingredients for a road ahead that can lead us toward a world free of nuclear weapons. The authors review historical efforts to deal with the challenge of nuclear weapons, with a focus on the momentous arms control negotiations between U.S. president Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. They offer specific recommendations for reducing risks that should be adopted by the nuclear enterprise, both military and civilian, in the United States and abroad. Since the risks posed by the nuclear enterprise are so high, they conclude, no reasonable effort should be spared to ensure safety and security.

Book Push It to Move It

Download or read book Push It to Move It written by David B. Amerine and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What started out as an Ethic Will for my family and friends, then morphed into a memoire of sorts, has become a record of my experiences in the nuclear industry over a 45 year career. These experiences include recoveries of multi-billion dollar projects and changing the cultures in those organizations under a variety of very difficult circumstances. The approaches, which include successes and failures, led to a philosophy that can be applied across the industrial complex for projects, facilities, and plant organizations that find themselves in some form of exigency. Those same guidelines can be used to avoid the issues that result in those large problems. There are engineers, mid to upper-level managers, project managers, and executives who could benefit from hearing about the lessons learned in these endeavors under trying circumstances. Even though my experiences were in the Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Complex and the commercial nuclear industry, the approaches taken have broad application beyond those areas. Although there were technical issues at the center of each one of the troubled facilities where I was a member of the leadership team or the leader brought in to affect the recovery, the core issues were communication, accountability, and leadership. What I learned and put into practice can be of benefit to any executive, project manager, or leader of complex plants or projects regardless of the size or nature of the operation. The challenge is to infuse the organization with a sense of purpose and commitment. To do this usually requires some change from the existing culture to new thought processes. This takes vision and leadership and knowing what tools to apply and when to apply them. I was at ground zero in the nuclear industry for two major changes in human management, fitness for duty and safety conscious work environment (SCWE). The cutting edge practices put in place led the way in the industry and helped form the regulations in those areas. I discuss my experiences in the implementation and nurturing of the SCWE. There are lots of guidance (now) in Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and DOE regulations and procedures about the SCWE. However, I am not aware of any published first hand experience record of what worked and what did not work in establishing that aspect of the organization safety culture. Over the years I have had many colleagues suggest that I should document my experiences, approaches, and methods in a book or manuscript. I never had the time before I retired and the reflection on my life and philosophies for an Ethic Will led me to the conclusion that such a document of my career might be of benefit to others.

Book Managing Environmental Impact Assessment for Construction and Operation in New Nuclear Power Programmes

Download or read book Managing Environmental Impact Assessment for Construction and Operation in New Nuclear Power Programmes written by and published by International Atomic Energy Agency. This book was released on 2014 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication provides a holistic approach to environmental protection in new nuclear power programs. It describes the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, the subsequent utilization of the EIA, and the necessary infrastructure for such processes. The presumption is that a Member State embarking on such a program already has an environmental regulatory framework in place, which may not be developed for nuclear power but for industrial projects, therefore the emphasis is on the environmental aspects that are unique to a nuclear power plant project. The publication is addressed to senior managers, project managers or coordinators and technical specialists of government authorities and agencies, including the regulatory body, operating organizations and supporting industries and other organizations involved in environmental issues.
