Book excerpt: Take the true story of a small, brown, pesky but lovable mutt whose funny, frustrating and downright annoying exploits make other canine characters seem seem positively saintly. Add to the mix a "factional" account of the near-demise of a marriage seen, not through the dog's eyes exactly, but through the shifting, changing parallels between this dog's five-year life and the story of a woman's relationship to her husband. Season with the clash of cultures between this woman's English origins and the traditions of her American spouse. Stir the ingredients together in the aromatic pot that is bubbling, up-and-coming Portland, Oregon, and you begin to get the flavor of OF MUTTS AND MEN.

Book excerpt: Spencer Quinn's Of Mutts and Men is the latest in the New York Times and USA Today bestselling series that the Los Angeles Times called “nothing short of masterful"... When Chet the dog, “the most lovable narrator in all of crime fiction” (Boston Globe), and his partner, PI Bernie Little of the desert-based Little Detective Agency, arrive to a meeting with hydrologist Wendell Nero, they are in for a shocking sight—Wendell has come to a violent and mysterious end. What did the hydrologist want to see them about? Is his death a random robbery, or something more? Chet and Bernie, working for nothing more than an eight-pack of Slim Jims, are on the case. Bernie might be the only one who thinks the police have arrested the wrong man, including the perp’s own defense attorney. Chet and Bernie begin to look into Wendell’s work, a search that leads to a struggling winemaker who has received an offer he can’t refuse. Meanwhile, Chet is smelling water where there is no water, and soon Chet and Bernie are in danger like never before. The goal of this newly revised second edition is to continue to provide the investigative manager with the updated tools and techniques necessary to successfully manage the investigative unit. Many of these techniques and strategies were learned through trial and error. It begins with a look at the various elements of the investigative process. These elements include the basics of criminal investigations, the role of patrol in the investigative process, organizing the investigative unit, rank/position/status of investigators, selecting and supervising investigative personnel, developing new investigators, case management, managing confidential source programs, supervision of undercover personnel, raid and arrest planning, the qualifications for the undercover officer, and evaluating performance of personnel. Administrative considerations, such as managing confidential source programs and case management are examined in detail. The final sections of the book examines performance evaluation of investigative personnel, which differs greatly from the evaluation of patrol personnel. Investigative “marginal performers” are studied, and useful techniques for managing these individuals are provided. Methods of developing new investigators as well as mechanisms to train patrol personnel for potential assignment to investigations are also covered. In addition, the Appendices contains material and forms on responsibilities, time allocation, selection and application, case screenings, case reviews, referrals, fund and payment policy, operational plan, and evaluation design. The book will be useful for patrol officers or detectives who are interested in preparing themselves for supervisory or management positions.

Book Breaking the Chain

Book excerpt: From the award-winning syndicated comic strip Mutts, the long-awaited “Guard Dog” story is now collected and presented in full color along with supplementary material, timed for the 30th anniversary Guard Dog made his debut in the Mutts comic strip in 1995 and quickly became one of the strip’s most beloved characters. As a chained dog longing for freedom, he’s played an important role in raising awareness about the cruelty of tethering and has inspired countless Mutts readers to become involved in animal welfare. In October 2023, nearly three decades after his debut, Guard Dog’s freedom story began to unfold in newspapers and online. After being abandoned by his owner, left alone and suffering, Guard Dog was discovered by his animal friends Mooch and Earl, and ultimately rescued by Doozy, a kindly neighborhood girl, and Ozzie, Earl’s guardian. After years of visiting Guard Dog to provide him with comfort and support, Doozy adopted him—marking the end of a long life of neglect and the beginning of one filled with love and safety. The story line concludes with Guard Dog not only getting a new home but also a new name—Sparky—a nod to Patrick McDonnell’s greatest artistic inspiration, Charles M. Schulz, creator of Peanuts. As Guard Dog found his happy ending, McDonnell received requests from readers all over the world, many of whom had been invested in Guard Dog’s plight for decades, hoping that the long-anticipated story would be made into a book. This collected volume answers the demands of those passionate readers. Brought to life with Patrick McDonnell’s warm and intimate art, and featuring the complete story, now in color for the first time, Breaking the Chain is an emotionally resonant vignette whose grounding in the real-life animal neglect issues that affect millions of chained dogs worldwide will move both long-time Mutts fans and first-time readers.
