Book excerpt: Interdisciplinary research is a cooperative effort by a team of investigators, each an expert in the use of different methods and concepts, who have joined in an organized program to attack a challenging problem. Each investigator is responsible for the research in their area of discipline that applies to the problem, but together the investigators are responsible for the final product. The need for interdisciplinary training activities has been detailed over the last 25 years in both public and private reports. The history of science and technology has even shown the important advances that arose from interdisciplinary research, including plate tectonics which brought together geologists, oceanographers, paleomagnetists, seismologists, and geophysicists to advance the ability to forecast earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In recognition of this, the need to train scientists who can address the highly complex problems that challenge us today and fully use new knowledge and technology, and the fact that cooperative efforts have proved difficult, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR), the National Institute on Nursing Research (NINR), and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) requested that an Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee be created to complete several tasks including: examining the needs and strategies for interdisciplinary training in the brain, behavioral, social, and clinical sciences, defining necessary components of true interdisciplinary training in these areas, and reviewing current educational and training programs to identify elements of model programs that best facilitate interdisciplinary training. Bridging Disciplines in the Brain, Behavioral, and Clinical Sciences provides the conclusions and recommendations of this committee. Due to evaluations of the success of interdisciplinary training programs are scarce, the committee could not specify the "necessary components" or identify the elements that "best facilitate" interdisciplinary training. However, after reviewing existing programs and consulting with experts, the committee identified approaches likely to be successful in providing direction for interdisciplinary endeavors at various career stages. This report also includes interviews, training programs, and workshop agendas used.

Yet, there l;lre a number of cases within the life sciences where researchers have been actively engaged in endeavors that take them across disciplinary boundaries. These are ripe for investigation by those interested in the process of science. To provide an in-depth study of some historical or contemporary cases of cross disciplinary research activity in the life sciences, a conference was held at Georgia State University in May, 1984. This conference was supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities (U. S. A. ) through their research conference program. Over a three-day period historians, philosophers, and researchers who were actively engaged in various of the life sciences discussed specific examples of interdisciplinary research and tried to analyze what was needed for successful crossing of disciplinary boundaries. After the conference, each of the participants revised their original presentations, partly in light of the discussion at the conference. The papers in this volume are the fruits of that endeavor.

The pandemic unleashed by Covid 19 in the last two years has shaken the socio-economic foundations of countries and societies to a point where the world cannot be the same as before the pandemic. It has re-focused the world’s attention on the priority of healthcare, and healthcare infrastructure and its innovative management. Inevitably, questions have again been raised more vehemently on what kind of a world we want to live in. Environmental concerns are being pursued with renewed vigour, The urgency of developing new, robust infrastructure relevant for the new world is gaining wider consensus. By 2030, as reports suggest, cyber – physical systems, internet of things and wearable technology will be everywhere and in everything, renewable energy will power the world, and digital entertainment will take centre stage among other developments. The third edition of the conference on “Interdisciplinary Research in Technology and Management” attempts to spotlight the above concerns. The number of tracks on which papers are invited from scholars, researchers, consultants and practitioners to share their interdisciplinary research and consultative work has been enlarged. As before, the papers will be peer reviewed and authors of the selected papers will be invited to present their papers in the IRTM conference. The presentation of papers will be interspersed with Keynote Talks by eminent experts on the theme of the conference or individual domains.
