Book Managing Dispersed Innovation in SMEs

Download or read book Managing Dispersed Innovation in SMEs written by Philipp Walter Sauter and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Similar to large multinational companies (MNCs), small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have begun to extend their global commitment from exports only to full-scale subsidiaries with marketing, production and even research and development (R & D) activities at locations in distant markets. Moreover, SMEs increasingly shift R & D tasks to external partners that provide complementary know-how or to reduce risks. This dispersion of knowledge-intensive activities to distant sites or to external partners challenges the way SMEs undertake innovation. Although there is extant research on how large MNCs can manage this dispersion of R & D activities, only little is known on how SMEs can implement effective management approaches. This thesis addresses this lack in research and investigates management mechanisms and their applicability to the specific challenges of SMEs to manage dispersed innovation. Whereas the major part of this thesis investigates the global dimension of managing dispersed innovation, the final part addresses the external dimension. This thesis is structured in five separate articles. The first article provides an introduction to this topic and frames the overall research agenda and results of this thesis. The following four articles are individual contributions to sub-topics of this research agenda. The first three articles investigate the specific case of the management of global R & D in SMEs. The first article applies a multiple case study approach and explores the management mechanisms that are applied by SMEs to manage global R & D activities. Based on cases from various industries, three archetypes are derived. The second article builds on these insights and derives a research framework on how the management of global R & D contributes to the performance of the company. Based on a study of 103 companies, various management mechanisms to manage global R & D activities in SMEs are tested. The third article applies again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovating and developing new products is critical for the survival and growth of any small firm, but particularly for technology-based firms. This study of NPD at small Irish electronics firms makes two main contributions to knowledge. Firstly, the management of NPD at small firms is found to be different from that at large firms in several respects, including: NPD resources and expenditure, organising for NPD, NPD process proficiency, marketing and technical skills and proficiency, R&D/marketing integration, top management support, and, new product and market characteristics. These differences are shown to have implications for managers, policy makers and researchers. Secondly, this study provides a unique insight into the management of NPD in Irish firms and facilitates a comparison between NPD in Irish firms and those in other countries. Some of the key features of NPD in Ireland highlighted by this study are; NPD at large Irish electronics firms is mainly incremental, Irish firms are good at developing technically difficult new product but are slow to enter new markets, and, Irish electronics firms do not have well developed project management skills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of culture in the innovation dynamic of small firms within the context of their territorial environments? How do shared values, beliefs and practices underpin the knowledge production process that leads to innovation? In what way do symbolic aspects of social life shape European SMEs’ innovation processes? This volume gives an extensive insight into the complex links between culture and innovation in one of the key agents of economic life: SMEs and micro firms. The chapters employ different analytical and methodological strategies in regions of Europe to identify dimensions of culture, especially values, norms, skills and institutions, and to scrutinize which specific components of culture are relevant to firm innovation and to the more general dynamics of regional innovation. The original research presented shows how small firms learn, interact, compete and collaborate with other key agents of the innovation system. Taken as a whole, the volume points the way towards a more comprehensive framework for understanding the nature of innovation in SMEs and micro firms. This book was released on 2004-02-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Which are the most important success factors and leadership implications that make some small and medium-sized firms more innovative and more successful than others? Those have been the underlying questions that guided us, when writing this paper on the management of innovation and its role for the accomplishment of leadership excellence in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). When searching the literature of the past five years one can find a vast amount of published articles and studies on innovation and the management of innovation but only a limited number of articles dealt with the specific situation and needs of SMEs. Thus we felt that it would be helpful for leaders of this type of companies to identify a set of practicable implications and measures to be taken in order to support and foster innovation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of founding new enterprises and making them grow and prosper is a far more convoluted undertaking than it was just a few decades ago. This book explores the complexity faced by today s entrepreneurs. Institutional boundaries, evolutionary perspectives and the intricacies of management are the central themes in this study of entrepreneurs and SMEs in a world marked by major transitions. While mainstream research enhances our understanding of the dynamics of the entrepreneurial process, this book progresses the research yet further. It examines another fundamental role of research in entrepreneurship: our understanding of future organizational and managerial forms evolving from the globalization process. Issues addressed include: growth patterns among enterprises initiated by science-and-technology-based entrepreneurs the actions and motives driving radical entrepreneurs the role of experience versus formal education in entrepreneurship the role of endogenous growth processes managerial complexity in new knowledge-based enterprises the role of collaboration for innovation in new business ventures. The contributors aim to further encourage dialogue and reflections triggered by the growing emphasis on entrepreneurship in policy agendas and business communities all over Europe. As such, this book will prove stimulating reading for researchers, students, academics, consultants and advisers involved in entrepreneurship, business and management.
