Book excerpt: In 1992 the World Bank launched the Africa's Management in the 1990s research program, a comprehensive study of the issues of institutional capacity building in Sub-Saharan Africa and its effects on economic and social development. This report focuses on the program and on how to implement its main message: institutions must be both rooted in the local context and culture and open to outside challenges and influences. Chapters focus on the institutional aspects of capacity building, best practices in public administration, indigenous private sector development, and a framework for reconciliation between institutions.

Book Africa s Recovery in the 1990s

Download or read book Africa s Recovery in the 1990s written by Henning Pieper and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the design of adjustment policies in the latter part of the 1980s has generally shown greater attention to their impact on growth and social implications, this book argues that several orthodox adjustment policies are still incongruent with long-term development in Africa. It goes on to discuss a development strategy which could lead to a much awaited economic recovery and improvement in social conditions in Africa in the 1990s drawing its conclusions from a general theoretical discussion and national case-studies.

Book Subsaharan Africa in the 1990s

Download or read book Subsaharan Africa in the 1990s written by Rukhsana A. Siddiqui and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1997-06-25 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic performance of African countries south of the Sahara generally has been poor during the past two decades. External factors such as high oil prices, deteriorating terms of trade, and wars, and formidable internal factors such as corruption, chauvinism, authoritarianism, and violence have continued to plague the region. Whereas in the 1980s the Subsahara was overwhelmed by drought, devaluation, and debt, the 1990s have brought the paradox of civil strife and a complex transition to democracy. This volume surveys the major political, economic, social, ecological, and gender related aspects of Subsaharan Africa's struggle toward democracy. Its essays pose two fundamental sets of ideas: that the internal equilibrium can be restored only through institutional changes with these countries; and that the political and economic dilemmas in the region are closely related to issues of gender and the environment. The volume will be of interest to scholars and students of comparative politics, developmental economics, and African studies.

Book Management and Economic Development in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Management and Economic Development in Sub Saharan Africa written by John O. Okpara and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major challenges facing Sub-Saharan African organizations today is how to effectively manage their resources. Though the importance of effective management of organizational resources is generally acknowledged, published research on the theme is disappointingly scarce. This book hopes to contribute in filling the lacuna. Contributors to the volume, which is the first in a book series from African Journal of Business and Economic Research (AJBER), a peer-reviewed, triennial publication, discuss various management issues in sub-Saharan Africa such as employee motivation, job satisfaction, compensation, organizational commitment, ethics, social responsibility and export management and the interplay between these and the effective management of an organization's resources. They argue that effective management of organizational resources - whether in the public or private sector - promotes efficiency, which in turn enhances the organization's ability to compete. The contributors also offer valuable insights into why many organizations in sub-Saharan Africa are inefficiently managed and offer desiderata for overcoming such challenges.

Book Which Way to Livable and Productive Cities

Download or read book Which Way to Livable and Productive Cities written by Kirsten Hommann and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For African cities to grow economically as they have grown in size, they must create productive environments to attract investments, increase economic efficiency, and create livable environments that prevent urban costs from rising with increased population densification. What are the central obstacles that prevent African cities and towns from becoming sustainable engines of economic growth and prosperity? Among the most critical factors that limit the growth and livability of urban areas are land markets, investments in public infrastructure and assets, and the institutions to enable both. To unleash the potential of African cities and towns for delivering services and employment in a livable and environmentally friendly environment, a sequenced approach is needed to reform institutions and policies and to target infrastructure investments. This book lays out three foundations that need fixing to guide cities and towns throughout Sub-Saharan Africa on their way to productivity and livability.

Book From Crisis to Renewal

Download or read book From Crisis to Renewal written by Kempe Ronald Hope and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with crisis and renewal in African development policy and management. It digs deep into, takes stock of, and thoroughly analyzes the nature, impact, and future of development policy and management on the continent. It demonstrates the failure of post-independence policy and management in most of Africa, traces the emergence and results of reform measures, and advocates the lessons of success for the rest of Africa derived from Botswana’s approach to sustainable development and its achievement of economic prosperity and the maintenance of political stability and good governance. It concludes, rather optimistically, that the prospects for sustainable development are much better now than they have ever been before with the 21st century likely to be hailed as ‘The African Century’ – bringing with it a durable peace and sustainable growth.

Book Development Management In Africa

Download or read book Development Management In Africa written by Sadig Rasheed and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The changing role of the state in society and the economy, new orientations in public sector management and reform, and the growing importance of voluntary organizations and entrepreneurs have given new meaning to the concept of development management. This book argues that the task of managing development in the 1990s is one of encouraging dynamic interactions among public, private, and voluntary institutions as well as among external agencies and donors in an effort to raise living standards and to improve economic performance." "Emphasizing that development is no longer solely a public sector responsibility, the contributors offer a wholly new paradigm in place of the traditional concerns of public and development administration. They analyze the context in which the private and voluntary sectors and people-oriented initiatives have assumed their current prominence and put forward practical recommendations for sustaining linkages among public administration, business administration, and management practices in support of the development process in Africa."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Africa at a Turning Point

Download or read book Africa at a Turning Point written by Delfin Sia Go and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-04-14 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s, sub-Saharan Africa has experienced an acceleration of economic growth that has produced rising incomes and faster human development. However, this growth contrasts with the continent's experience between 1975 and 1995, when it largely missed out on two decades of economic progress. This disparity between Africa's current experience and its history raises questions about the continent's development. Is there a turnaround in Africa s economy? Will growth persist? 'Africa at a Turning Point?' is a collection of essays that analyzes three interrelated aspects of Africa's recent revival. The first set of essays examines Africa's recent growth in the context of its history of growth accelerations and collapses. It seeks to answer such questions as, is Africa at a turning point? Are the economic fundamentals finally pointing toward more sustainable growth? The second set of essays looks at donor flows, which play a large role in Africa's growth. These essays focus on such issues as the management and delivery of increased aid, and the history and volatility of donor flows to Africa. The third set of essays considers the recent impact of one persistent threat to sustained growth in Africa: commodity price shocks, particularly those resulting from fluctuations in oil prices.
