Through elaborated action design research, we collect data to diagnosis decision-makers concerns and identify decision making biases and errors. Using insights and collaboration, we design, implement and evaluate seven artifacts targeted to minimize four biases identified overconfidence bias, optimistic bias, planning fallacy and representativeness.

There are many models and frameworks in use in the business world today, and it is hard to keep track of them all. The MBA Model is designed to provide people with a broad groundling in all the key aspects of business. It is a simplified version of something more complex – it helps to understand a specific phenomenon by identifying its key elements. Management is the art of getting work done through others. It involves marshalling a set of resources to achieve desired objectives. Managers make decisions about allocating people and money in an effective way. There are many analytical tools to help decision making, including decision trees and net present value analysis. Most decision making is not as rational as we might expect it to be. Cognitive biases in decision making discusses why people often make snap judgements that are flawed, and how effective managers can overcome these biases to make better decisions. The following work is based on the theoretical foundations of the MBA model (25 need-to-know MBA models, Birkinshaw, 2017). After clarifying the basics in Part 1, examples of Cognitive Biases will follow. In the end of the Scientific Report the Management failure traced back to cognitive bias get explained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behavioural economics has established that cognitive biases such as the overconfidence bias impact managerial decision-making. Literature has also shown that different levels of management require different skills, values and decision-making processes and styles. It would likely follow that cognitive biases would impact different levels of management in varying ways. This research seeks to expand on current literature in drawing on principles of behavioural economics to further investigate the overconfidence bias and its relationship with different levels of management. This research also seeks to explore whether cognitive ability or reflection can further explain any relationship between overconfidence and level of management. A sample of managers at professional services firms was surveyed using various assessments of overconfidence. Utilising statistical techniques, it was found that in fact there were differences in overconfidence between levels of management. Specifically, middle management appeared to display different overconfidence tendencies than upper and lower management levels. The relationship between cognitive ability, level of management and the overconfidence bias also appeared to be significant enough to warrant further investigation. The results also showed insight into problems with the current definitions of overconfidence. Based on the findings, this study concludes by providing several business and academic recommendations.

Book excerpt: Survey and study background In an effort to gain some answers on the 1ST capital investment (project selection) decision criteria used in practice, a survey was undertaken in 1990 of 80 American, British, Australian and New Zealand companies. A one-page survey form was used that provided 15 possible 1ST investment criteria, a means of indicating whether they are used or not, the percentage of projects to which each criterion is applied, and an overall ranking in terms of total project value for each criterion. The criteria are shown in Table 2.1. The criteria are categorized into financial, management, and development criteria. They were developed, first, through interviews with some 20 chief information officers (CIOs) in Britain and the United States. These CIOs were questioned on what criteria their organizations use in selecting 1ST investment projects, with the aim of developing a full list of the criteria used in practice. Secondly, the criteria and the form were tested and refined in a pilot study with some 12 companies. The criteria used in the survey and listed in Table 2.1 are primary level criteria.
