Book Rethinking the Case Study in International Business and Management Research

Download or read book Rethinking the Case Study in International Business and Management Research written by Rebecca Marschan-Piekkari and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important and original book places the case study in international business research in its historical context, critically evaluates current case study practices in the field and proposes a more pluralistic future for case research within international business and international management research. While the case study is the most popular qualitative research strategy in the field, only a narrow selection of possible approaches is currently used. IB and IM researchers typically rely on a case study approach that could be characterized as 'qualitative positivism'. The editors and contributors look beyond this disciplinary convention and encourage greater pluralism in IB and IM case research. Their key argument is that increased awareness of prevailing disciplinary conventions - and their limitations - increases the potential for methodological innovation and versatility in case research. The contributions provide critical, novel and innovative perspectives on the case study in IB and IM research. The book offers inspiration to case authors and an authoritative methodological reference for those publishing and reviewing case research. It will also be highly regarded by postgraduate and doctoral students in IB and IM as well as both qualitative and quantitative researchers in the field.

Book Managing complex multi case study evaluations

Download or read book Managing complex multi case study evaluations written by Heather L. Kane and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 2010 and 2012, as part of the Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) initiative, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded 50 states, six US territories, and 50 communities to support high-impact, evidence-based, population-wide strategies to create healthy environments for their residents. CPPW is a locally driven initiative with a primary focus on prevention and control of tobacco use and obesity. As part of this initiative, CDC also funded an implementation evaluation to describe and understand how evidence-based, community-level improvements are applied in the field and contribute to improvements in health. We conducted this evaluation using multi-case study methods that best captured the local context and implementation processes. Large, cross-case evaluations present challenges that single or small multi-case evaluations do not. These challenges include creating flexible, but standard data collection instruments; ensuring the feasibility and utility of instruments and processes through pilot testing; promoting consistent data collection and quality; and managing a large qualitative data set and coding team. In this report, we document some strategies regarding data collection, management, and analysis that should be beneficial to other organizations supporting public health initiatives and to investigators in designing the strongest possible evaluations using large multi-case design.
