Book Managerialism in the Public Sector

Download or read book Managerialism in the Public Sector written by Andrea Tomo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to offer insights into the complex and often unclear context of public sector management, providing a new theoretical and practical approach to the analysis and interpretation of these issues. The book is grounded in the awareness that the public sector has too often shown inefficiencies, despite the expensive measures taken, and from manifold perspectives such as the economic, social, organizational, and institutional ones, among others. It acknowledges the lack of behavioral, cultural, and context-oriented research in the field, thus proposing to innovate the debate and to expand the current understanding of which organizational features characterize modern public administrations, what factors influence the predominance of different models, with a special focus on the Italian setting, benefiting from a wholly comprehensive innovative methodological approach. The findings offer key implications for theory, practice, and policy-making, contending the importance of holistic approaches to the debate and abandoning pre-constituted schemes to put forth the relevance of behavioral models. It offers a key message: contextual-specific and cultural factors influencing individual behaviors are important and should better influence policy-making processes, towards "glocalization" in order to improve quality.

Book Public Management Policy making ethics and accountability in public management

Download or read book Public Management Policy making ethics and accountability in public management written by Stephen P. Osborne and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2002 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, the public sector has been undergoing major changes throughout the Western industrialized world, the transitional economies of central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and South East Asia. The main thrust of these changes has been to bring public sector management practices closer to those of the private sector. This raises the question of how far public and private sector management are comparable. This set examines the relationships between public sector and private sector management in terms of both classical management theory and the new public management that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s. While the collection concentrates on articles from the last 20 years, some historical pieces are also included. The four volumes are arranged along the following lines: volume 1 - for and against the public sector; volume 2 - managing the plural state; volume 3 - broadening the public management perspective; and volume 4 - from policy to practice in public services.

Book New Public Management

Download or read book New Public Management written by Jan-Erik Lane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New public management is a topical phrase to describe how management techniques from the private sector are now being applied to public services. This book provides a completely up-to-date overview of the main theoretical models of public sector management, and examines the key changes that have occurred as more and more public services are contracted out to private organisations, as the public sector itself grapples with 'internal markets'. Drawing on economics, organisational theory and poliltics, Jan-Erik Lane presents new public management from an analytical perspective. This book uses game theory and empirical studies in order to assess the pros and cons of new public management.

Book Strategic Management in Public Services Organizations

Download or read book Strategic Management in Public Services Organizations written by Ewan Ferlie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategic Management in Public Services Organizations sets out to connect the two traditionally disparate academic literatures of public management and strategic management. The authors argue that some models of strategic management are now of enhanced relevance for contemporary public services organizations, especially when considering successive New Public Management reforms. This observation has important consequences for the requisite work practices, skills and knowledge bases of current public managers, as they are increasingly being asked to act as strategic as well as operational managers. Strategic Management in Public Services Organizations takes a strongly comparative and international perspective in addressing the fundamental issue of strategic management within diverse public administrative traditions. The impact of strategic management on the performance of public agencies is examined and it is argued that the appropriate use of strategic management models depends on the politico-administrative and cultural contexts of the public services organization in question, concluding that there is no single best way to strategically lead public organisations. This is an advanced textbook aimed at the postgraduate level, particularly students on MPAs and MBAs with a public sector option or MScs in Public Policy and Public Management.
