Book excerpt: The litter results showed that the above-ground plant litter pool does not supply a large amount of nutrients for plant and microbial growth, but it does act as a buffering pool reducing potential N losses to the environment, particularly in more intensive systems. Finally, the SOM results demonstrated that increasing management intensity increased C and N accumulation in grazed pastures. These data aid in assessing potential environmental impacts and nutrient-use efficiency of various grazing management practices as well as providing data needed for modeling nutrient cycling in forage-livestock systems.

Book excerpt: This Research Topic is hosted in partnership with the "Grazing in Future Multi-Scapes" international workshop. The workshop will be held online, 30th May - 5th June 2021. Throughout different landscapes of the world, “grazing” herbivores fulfill essential roles in ecology, agriculture, economies and cultures including: families, farms, and communities. Not only do livestock provide food and wealth, they also deliver ecosystem services through the roles they play in environmental composition, structure and dynamics. Grazing, as a descriptive adjective, locates herbivores within a spatial and temporal pastoral context where they naturally graze or are grazed by farmers, ranchers, shepherds etc. In many cases, however, pastoralism with the single objective of maximizing animal production and/or profit has transformed landscapes, diminishing biodiversity, reducing water and air quality, accelerating loss of soil and plant biomass, and displacing indigenous animals and people. These degenerative landscape transformations have jeopardized present and future ecosystem and societal services, breaking the natural integration of land, water, air, health, society and culture. Land-users, policy makers and societies are calling for alternative approaches to pastoral systems; a call for diversified-adaptive and integrative agro-ecological and food-pastoral-systems designs that operate across multiple scales and ‘scapes’ (e.g. thought-, social-, land-, food-, health-, wild-scapes), simultaneously. There needs to be a paradigm shift in pastoral production systems and how grazing herbivores are managed –grazed- within them, derived initially from a change in perception of how they provide wealth. The thoughtscapes will include paradigm shifts where grazers move away from the actual archetype of pastoralism, future landscapes are re-imagined, and regenerative and sustainable management paradigms are put in place to achieve these visions. From this will come a change in collective thinking of how communities and cultures (socialscapes) perceive their relationships with pastoral lands. The landscapes are the biotic and abiotic four-dimensional domains or environments in need of nurture. Landscapes are the tables where humans and herbivores gain their nourishment, i.e. foodscapes. Foodscapes and dietary perceptions, dictate actions and reactions that are changing as developed countries grapple with diseases related to obesity, and people starve in developing countries. Societies are demanding healthscapes and nutraceutical foodscapes, and paradoxically, some are moving away from animal products. While indigenous species of animals, including humans (wildscapes), have been displaced from many of their lands by monotonic pastoralism, multifunctional pastoral systems can be designed in view of dynamic multi-scapes of the future. The purpose of this Research Topic is to influence future mental and practical models of pastoralism in continually evolving multi-scapes. We seek a collection of papers that will cultivate such a shift in thinking towards future models of sustainable multipurpose pastoralism. The contributions will be synthesized to establish how multifunctional pastoral systems can be re-imagined and then designed in view of the integrative dynamics of sustainable future multi-scapes.

Book excerpt: Grazing and greenchop experiments were conducted simultaneously every 28 days during a six-month period (1) to estimate the seasonal variation in nutritive value of a Pensacola bahiagrass pasture, (2) to evaluate the performance of grazing steers on this pasture, (3) to compare estimates of intake by grazing animals with animal performance and (4) to compare sampling methods for estimating quality and quantity of pasture throughout the season. Measurements of live weight changes by grazing yearling steers and estimations of pasture organic matter (OM) intake by different techniques were made for each period. Calculated OM and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield of the pasture and chemical composition of forage samples were also obtained. Results of an intake and digestion trial with greenchop were compared to the results obtained in the pasture trial. Average daily gain (ADG) by grazing steers declined from May to September, then slightly increased in October. It followed a trend similar to the general live weight pattern onserved in the flatwood areas, i.e., high ADG at the beginning of the grazing season, rapid decline as the summer progresses throuth September, and small increase in early fall. The low ADG by the steers during August and September was apparently independent of differences in the quantity of available forage and, thus, may have been caused by low OM intake. Interseeding legumes may be a strategy to enhance N cycling, but effects of dung excreted from cattle grazing pastures with legumes on dung decomposition rates and soil N cycling have not been studied. Our objective was to evaluate how dung excreted from cattle grazing legume-interseeded, N-fertilized, and unfertilized smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.) pastures affects dung chemical composition, dry matter decomposition, CO2 flux, and N availability in soil. Freshly deposited dung from yearling steers grazing legume-interseeded, N-fertilized, and unfertilized pastures was collected and placed as pats in a neighboring pasture where experiments were established to evaluate effects of year (2014 and 2015), season (June and August), cattle diet, and time after dung placement (3, 7, and 30 days) on dung [dry matter, C, N, water extractable C (WEC), and water extractable N (WEN) contents] and soil (WEC, WEN, NH4-N, and NO3-N) characteristics. Across the experiments, these characteristics were often found to depend on year, season, and diet interactions, but overall, dung from legume-interseeded pastures had greater N content, WEC, and WEN, and lower C:N ratio than dung from N-fertilized and unfertilized pastures. Dung from legume-interseeded pastures also decomposed faster and had more CO2 flux than dung from unfertilized pastures, but showed no differences with that from N-fertilized pastures. Soil nutrient movement was not affected by cattle diet, but may have been limited by the time of dung placement and the depth of soil analyzed. Legume interseeding distinguish itself as a positive component of pasture management with an improved potential for dung decomposition and soil nutrient movement because of nutrient rich dung.

The benefits of a wide range of individual cover crops and blends/mixes for specific agronomic crop rotations and geographic locations are included. Descriptions, photographs, and illustrations show how cover crops look in the field, including plant height, leaf architecture, and rooting patterns. Long term benefits are described for soil health, soil structure, water quality, nutrient contributions, soil biodiversity, air quality and climate change. In addition to the "whys" of cover crop use, the book includes details on the "hows:" how to choose cover crops for specific applications and locations; how (and when) to plant; how to manage and maintain the cover for maximum benefit; and how and when to terminate. Planting options include: drilling/planting between rows of an agronomic crop at planting time, or when the crop is short (i.e. corn in early June); "aerial" seeding with an airplane or high-clearance machine shortly before the crop reaches maturity; and drilling/planting immediately after harvest of the agronomic crop. The resulting increase in soil organic matter means the agronomic crop yields benefit from better water infiltration and water holding capacity, greater availability of nitrogen and other nutrients, deeper rooting, and increased soil microbial activity in the root zone.
