Book excerpt: Following 20th century logging, much of the natural coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) range consists of dense second-growth stands with slow tree growth and low biodiversity. There is a landscape-scale effort in much of coastal northern California to increase tree growth rates and ecosystem biodiversity via thinning treatments, thereby hopefully accelerating the development of old-growth forest characteristics. Redwood National Park (RNP) has been experimenting with thinning in these forest types since the 1970s. Given the interesting history of logging and restoration in RNP and the future plans for widespread thinning in this region, my thesis examined the effects of land management on forest productivity, biodiversity, and ecocultural resources. The first chapter provides a basic history of land management within the North Coast region. The second chapter investigates how redwood physiology, redwood growth, and forest biodiversity respond to restoration treatments. My Chapter 2 investigations found that thinning second-growth redwood forests 1) does not meaningfully influence tree water status, 2) increases tree gas exchange in the short-term, 3) increases tree growth in the long-term, 4) increases understory plant diversity, and 5) does not affect bird or mammal diversity. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that thinning second-growth redwood forests has the potential to accelerate the development of old-growth characteristics. This verification of the efficacy of restoration treatments is important information for land managers, as plans are currently underway to apply these treatments at the landscape-scale. Ideally, this thesis can provide useful baseline data to aid future assessments of long-term forest responses to contemporary restoration efforts.

Many of the studies investigating forest response to drought focus on inland forest types rather than coastal forests. This study examined tree growth and drought response in coastal forests at restoration thinning sites, evaluating responses to local climate, tree-level competition, and site-level factors. Tree cores were extracted from previously harvested stands at three restoration sites in Redwood National Park, California, from both thinned and unthinned stands. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) trees > 20 cm diameter at breast height were sampled (n = 274), spanning six different thinning prescriptions with varying years of thinning treatments (1978, 1995, and 2007). Generalized linear mixed effects models were used to evaluate the influence of local climate, competition, site, stand age, time since thinning, and species on tree growth and drought response. They are also symbols of conflict and negotiation, remnants of environmental battles over the limits of industrialization, profiteering, and globalization. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, logging operations have eaten away at the redwood forest, particularly areas covered by ancient giant redwoods. Today, such trees occupy a mere 120,000 acres. Their existence is testimony to the efforts of activists to rescue some of these giants from destruction. Very few conservation battles have endured longer or with more violence than on the North Coast of California, behind what locals call the Redwood Curtain. Defending Giants explores the long history of the Redwood Wars, focusing on the ways rural Americans fought for control over both North Coast society and its forests. Activists defended these trees not only because the redwood forest had dwindled in size, but also because, by the late twentieth century, the local economy was increasingly dominated by multinational corporations. The resulting conflict—the Redwood Wars—pitted workers and environmental activists against the rising tide of globalization and industrial logging in a complex war over endangered species, sustainable forestry, and, of course, the fate of the last ancient redwoods. Activists perched in trees and filed lawsuits, while the timber industry, led by Pacific Lumber, fought the lawsuits and used their power to halt reform efforts. Ultimately, the Clinton administration sidestepped Congress and the courts to negotiate an innovative compromise. In the process, the Redwood Wars transformed American environmental politics by shifting the balance of power away from Congress and into the hands of the executive branch.

Book excerpt: Mature second-growth coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forests are an important and uncommon resource in the redwood region. Development of second-growth redwood forests beyond rotation age (~50 years) is not well understood. Continuous long-term data are especially lacking, considering that the maximum possible age of second-growth stands is now over 150 years. Two permanent observation plots in Arcata, CA, established in 1923 by Woodbridge Metcalf and last measured in 1990, provide a unique opportunity to examine the development of coast redwood forest regenerating after logging in ~1880. We surveyed the Metcalf plots using modern methods and assembled a complete dataset from 1923 to 2015. We also built new allometric models for second-growth coast redwood to predict tree-level quantities such as total biomass and leaf area from ground-based measurements. The Metcalf plots nearly doubled in total basal area over the study period, reaching 124 and 143 m2 ha-1, and redwood increased in proportional dominance as the non-redwood species steadily declined in number. These results, along with substantial density-independent mortality, suggest a transition to a maturation stage of forest development at ~83 years since logging. In the most recent surveys (~135 years since logging), the leaf area index values of trees alone for the Metcalf plots (9.8 and 12.7) are similar to nearby old-growth forests (11.6-15.9). Our results from relatively unmanaged conditions can be compared to silvicultural treatments of regenerating coast redwood forest meant to accelerate development of old-growth characteristics, especially as treated stands move beyond rotation age.
