Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management of Second Growth in the Southern Appalachians Of the total wooded area Of the Southern Appalachians from 80 to 85 per cent is second growth._ Each year the supply Of Virgin timber grows less, and the many Wood using industries must depend upon this second growth for their futureb supplies. Its perpetuation is therefore One Of the most Vital problems Of the region. Yet there IS but little doubt that unless improvements are made in the present methods Of handling these second growth lands the future yield from them will be both small. In quantity and poor in quality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic and Social Problems and Conditions of the Southern Appalachians Aside from the present abnormal paralysis in industry, the region is going through a period of declining returns from timber products, the end of which cannot be predicted. The low point of the normal curve has almost certainly not been reached. Under favorable circumstances several decades may elapse before income from the timber again equals that of 1929. Book Restoration in the Southern Appalachians

Download or read book Restoration in the Southern Appalachians written by United States Department of Agriculture and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We address three key questions for restoration ecology in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. First, what is the role of fire, especially when used as a management tool for oak-dominated ecosystems? Second, what is the relationship between early successional habitat and biodiversity? And third, how do we regenerate oak ecosystems? To answer these questions, first, we examine the historic role of fire in the mountains, discuss its effects on forest resources, and summarize a strategy for restoring fire to ecosystems with a long history of fire exclusion. Second, we examine the relationship between early successional habitats and wildlife resources in the mountains, discuss the pattern and rate of natural disturbance, and provide suggestions for creating and maintaining early successional habitat. And third, we review current management for oak regeneration and discuss the implications for oak ecosystems in the absence of management. In addition to addressing current questions in restoration ecology, we provide an extensive bibliography of the scientific literature, especially for fire management. Our goal is to provide a concise and practical summary of the current restoration literature for use by forest planners and managers throughout the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vegetation of the Southern Appalachians: An Indexed Bibliography, 1805-1982 The rich vegetation of the southern Appalachians has attracted the attention of botanists and plant ecologists for over 100 years. The bibliography presented here contains references spanning 177 years. Our primary objective in compiling this bibliography was to provide researchers 'and naturalists with access to this accumulating body of work. The volume of materials cited led us to provide an index by major topics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Assessing Species Composition in Second Growth and Old Growth Rich Coves of the Southern Appalachians

Download or read book Assessing Species Composition in Second Growth and Old Growth Rich Coves of the Southern Appalachians written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I compared composition of plant communities in second growth (60 - 80 years old) and old growth rich coves for evidence of reduced abundance or presence of plant species in the second growth communities. I evaluated the utility of both univariate and multivariate analytical methods. Data were collected from twenty-six 1000 m2 plots located across three distinct mountain ranges and geologies in the southern Appalachians of North Carolina. Comparison of nested and non-nested sampling protocols found no statistical differences in the parameters of species-area curves. Furthermore, I found no difference between the species-area curves of old growth and second growth; but, multiple comparison procedures identified 13 of 79 species with either lower abundance or incidence of occurrence in second growth rich coves. Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling (NMS) revealed no age class differences, but detected significant block differences associated with the three mountain ranges. Elevation and base cation concentrations were strongly correlated with the first and third NMS axes, respectively, but there was no strong correlate with the second NMS axis. In comparing univariate and multivariate analysis methods, I found that (1) aggregate univariate methods (like species diversity and species-area relationships) facilitate comparison of unrelated communities (2) multivariate methods support comparison of related communities and (3) univariate, multiple comparison procedures readily detect specific species changes within a community.

Book Proceedings of the Southern Appalachian Biological Control Initiative Workshop

Download or read book Proceedings of the Southern Appalachian Biological Control Initiative Workshop written by Philip Gibson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Southern Appalachian Biological Control Initiative Workshop: Asheville, North Carolina, September 26 and 27, 1996 Currently the natural heritage of southern Appalachia is threatened by a number of accidentally introduced exotic species. Native dogwood is being attacked by a disease known as dogwood anthracnose. The native American chestnut is falling victim to another disease - chestnut blight. An insect, balsam woolly adelgid, threatens Frasier fir. Hemlock woolly adelgid, another insect, is attacking native hemlock. The effects of these and other exotic pests on the ecosystem are dramatic. Another example of devastation effected by exotic species is the defoliation of oak trees by the gypsy moth, introduced by an entrepreneur who was seeking to establish a silk business in the northeast United States. The gypsy moth, a European pest, migrated to northern Virginia from the New England States. It is expected to be in northern Alabama by the year 2010. Because oak trees are valuable for timber as well as tourism (they provide much of the fall color which pe0p1e travel to southern Appalachia to view) gypsy moth has a major effect on the economics of the region. Book Report of the Secretary of Agriculture

Download or read book Report of the Secretary of Agriculture written by United States Dept of Agriculture and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Secretary of Agriculture: On the Southern Appalachian and White Mountain Watersheds The agricultural appropriation bill approved March 4, 1907, requires the Secretary of Agriculture to investigate the watersheds of the Southern Appalachian and White Mountains "and to report to Congress the area and natural conditions of said watersheds, the price at which the same can be purchased by the Government, and the advisability of the Government purchasing and setting apart the same as national forest reserves for the purpose of conserving and regulating the water supply and flow of said streams in the interest of agriculture, water power, and navigation." I have endeavored to have completed all investigations necessary to give Congress the information desired. Each one of the several problems involved has been handled by the most competent men whose services could be secured. The Forest Service detailed to the work several of its most experienced experts. The Bureau of Soils, after careful field study, has submitted information on soils and agricultural possibilities of the Southern Appalachian region. The Geological Survey of the Interior Department has made available the results of seven years of investigation of water power and navigation conditions of Southern Appalachian streams. Desirous of securing the most competent authority on every phase of the question, I have gone outside of the Government service to secure from Prof. L. C. Glenn, of Vanderbilt University, of Nashville, Tenn., the results of a three years' study of soil erosion in the Southern Appalachians, and from Mr. Philip W. Ayres, of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, a report on the commercial importance of the White Mountains. Approaching their subjects from different points of view, these men without a single exception have arrived at results which lead irresistibly to these conclusions, namely, that the Southern Appalachians and White Mountains arc of vast commercial importance to the industries of the country; that the good or evil influence of these regions in an unusual degree depends upon the treatment given them, and that both are encountering well-advanced destructive influences, which, unchecked, will bring widespread devastation to the regions themselves and. ruin to many of the industries of this country.
