Book Management of Agricultural Landscapes for the Conservation of Neotropical Migratory Birds

Download or read book Management of Agricultural Landscapes for the Conservation of Neotropical Migratory Birds written by Rolf R. Koford and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-eight Neotropical migrants are common in the agricultural landcapes of the Midwest. Most of these species depend on herbaceous or wooded habitats, which are declining as the average size of farms in this region increases about 12% per decade. We recommend minimizing cultivation; encouraging moderate grazing; delaying spring mowing of hayfields, grassed waterways, and roadsides; avoiding nighttime mowing; encouraging longer intervals between mowing; avoiding fall mowing and annual mowing of grassed waterways and roadsides; retaining fencelines along roadsides; maintaining idle land that provide nesting cover; and changing the amount and configuration of idle land to enhance species richness and nesting success.

Book Ecology and Management of Neotropical Migratory Birds

Download or read book Ecology and Management of Neotropical Migratory Birds written by Thomas E. Martin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-10-19 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apparent decline in numbers among many species of migratory songbirds is a timely subject in conservation biology, particularly for ornithologists, ecologists, and wildlife managers. This book is an attempt to discuss the problem in full scope. It presents an ambitious, comprehensive assessment of the current status of neotropical migratory birds in the U.S., and the methods and strategies used to conserve migrant populations. Each chapter is an essay reviewing and assessing the trend from a different viewpoint, all written by leaders in the fields of ornithology, conservation, and population biology.

Book Riparian Areas

Download or read book Riparian Areas written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-10-10 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Book Applying Landscape Ecology in Biological Conservation

Download or read book Applying Landscape Ecology in Biological Conservation written by Kevin Gutzwiller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a current synthesis of principles and applications in landscape ecology and conservation biology. Bringing together insights from leaders in landscape ecology and conservation biology, it explains how principles of landscape ecology can help us understand, manage and maintain biodiversity. Gutzwiller also identifies gaps in current knowledge and provides research approaches to fill those voids.

Book Saving Migrant Birds

  • Author : John Faaborg
  • Publisher : Univ of TX + ORM

  • ISBN : 029279648X
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book Saving Migrant Birds written by John Faaborg and published by Univ of TX + ORM. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Rigorous and well defended . . . Faaborg makes many fresh and, in some cases, provocative points regarding management guidelines for migrant birds.” —Kenneth Able, Great Plains Research In the 1980s, numerous scientific surveys documented both declining bird populations, especially among Neotropical songbirds that winter in the tropics, and the loss of tropical rain forest habitat. Drawing the seemingly obvious conclusion, scientists and environmental activists linked songbird declines to loss of tropical habitats and alerted the world to an impending ecological catastrophe. Their warnings led to the establishment of the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Program, also known as Partners in Flight, the self-proclaimed largest conservation effort in history. Looking back over more than a decade of efforts to save migrant birds, John Faaborg offers the first serious evaluation of the state of songbird populations today, the effectiveness of conservation programs such as Partners in Flight, and the reliability and completeness of scientific research on migrant birds. Taking neither an alarmist nor a complacent approach, he shows that many factors besides habitat loss affect bird populations and that Neotropical migrants as a group are not declining dramatically, though some species adapt to habitat alteration more successfully than others. Faaborg’s state-of-the-art survey thus clarifies the kinds of information we will need and the conservation efforts we should undertake to ensure the long-term survival of Neotropical migrant birds. “Presents a carefully and closely reasoned argument about the magnitude of the conservation problems facing migrant birds, how we can reduce these problems, and how current conservation efforts have enormous value even if there is no immediate crisis.” —Scott K. Robinson, Professor and Head, Department of Animal Biology, University of Illinois

Book excerpt: This volume represents a compilation of papers presented at the 3rd International Partners in Flight Workshop held October 1-5, 1995, at the Grand Hotel in Cape May, NJ. The title of the workshop was 'Partners in Flight Conservation Plan: Building Consensus for Action.' Manuscripts have been available on-line at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology web site (http://birds.cornell.edu/pifcapemay) since the year 1999, and the majority of them have been updated recently to reflect knowledge available by the 2000 publication date. The volume is divided into seven sections that range from general planning considerations to a case study in bird conservation planning. References from all papers are compiled in a single 'References' section at the end of the volume.
