Book Management of Forests for Capercaillie in Scotland

Download or read book Management of Forests for Capercaillie in Scotland written by Robert Moss and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capercaillie is the biggest grouse in the world. It lives in Old World boreal and temperate forests and its range coincides largely with that of its main winter food, the Scots pine. This publication describes the biology and status of capercaillie in Scotland, discusses possible reasons for the decline in their numbers, and gives recommendations for managing forests for capercaillie. Most plantations which support good populations are rich in blackberry and a major recommendation is that this should be encouraged (guidelines are given).

Book Ecology of Capercaillie Within a Managed Pine Forest

Download or read book Ecology of Capercaillie Within a Managed Pine Forest written by Lois Canham and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AbstractThe capercaillie is a rare species of forest bird which is once again facing extinction in Britain. Working pine forests are thought to represent the future for capercaillie in Scotland. However, few studies have focused on capercaillie within working forests and as a result current management recommendations are based on studies conducted within semi-natural pinewoods. Therefore study of the ecology of capercaillie within working forests is vital for the survival of the species in Scotland. The present study investigated the ecology of capercaillie, based on indirect measures of capercaillie use, within Morangie Forest, a pine plantation managed by the Forestry Commission. Monthly dropping counts were collected over a 30 month period to gain insight into the capercaillie population at Morangie Forest, and to explore the use of faecal counts as a non-invasive monitoring tool. Habitat analysis, dietary analysis of droppings and genetic analysis of feathers were further conducted to fully explore ecology of capercaillie within Morangie Forest. Results showed that the capercaillie population in Morangie Forest was subject to seasonal movements and that movements were not confined to the bounds of the forest. Substantial mixing occurred with capercaillie from neighbouring Novar Forest. In addition, capercaillie within Morangie Forest selected habitat at a radius of 50m and beyond. The population of capercaillie at Morangie Forest was estimated at around 65 individuals based on measures from dropping counts and genetic determination of individuals from feathers. Results also suggested that winter dropping counts could represent a useful tool for forest managers to monitor the size and movement of capercaillie populations frequenting their forests. In addition winter dropping counts could be used in conjunction with habitat data to plan management of habitat for capercaillie. The present study contributes towards future management strategies for the conservation of capercaillie within working forests and suggests further research priorities for capercaillie in Scotland, particularly those focused at a landscape scale.

Book Ecological Bulletins Targets and Tools for the Maintenance of Forest Biodiversity

Download or read book Ecological Bulletins Targets and Tools for the Maintenance of Forest Biodiversity written by Per Angelstam and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-05-06 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maintaining forest biodiversity by combining protection, management and restoration of forest and woodland landscapes is a central component of sustainable development. Evidence that there are threshold levels for how much habitat loss may be tolerated for viable populations of specialised species to be maintained. Policy-makers, businesses and managers pose questions about how to balance use of renewable forest resources and conserve biodiversity. Examples are presented on how biodiversity assessments can be made. Proposes how the critical gaps in our knowledge identified throughout the book could be filled through macroecological research and international co-operation.

Book Capercaillie habitat diet and management in a Sitka spruce plantation in central Scotland

Download or read book Capercaillie habitat diet and management in a Sitka spruce plantation in central Scotland written by Nicholas Picozzi and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancestral habitat of capercaillie in most of its range is Scots pine forest with an understorey of blaeberry. Keillour forest in Perthshire is dominated by Sitka spruce, has little blaeberry, yet had a high density of capercaillie. Food and habitat use by capercaillie were studied there from 1991 to 1994. Seven cocks and two hens were caught, and marked with small radio transmitters. The habitats they occupied and food remains in their droppings provided information on home range, habitat utilization and diet through the year. Sitka spruce was the main food in autumn, winter and spring but was equalled by the fruiting heads of sedge in summer. Larch was the second most abundant item in spring and autumn diets. Sedge was plentiful on the wet restocks associated with the gleyed soils at Keillour and may provide a partial substitute for blaeberry in summer. Capercaillie showed a clear preference for the oldest blocks of trees, especially in winter. Sitka spruce, Norway spruce and Scots pine were used roughly in proportion to their availability in the birds' home range, but larch stands were used more than expected from availability. In summer, all birds used restocks to some extent. Management recommendations to encourage capercaillie in commercial plantations largely comprising exotics are that mature stands over 45 years and well-vegetated restocks should each occupy at least 20 per cent of the forest, larch and blocks of mixed conifers each at least 15 per cent of the ground. Blaeberry should be encouraged and, if possible, patches of windthrow involving living trees with the main root intact should be retained.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
