Book Managing International Manufacturing

Download or read book Managing International Manufacturing written by Kasra Ferdows and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1989 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the current state of knowledge and pending questions in the internationalisation of manufacturing from the perspective of production management. In spite of its substantial reality and accelerated growth, internationalisation of manufacturing has not received much attention from the researchers in the production and operations management area. Most of the body of knowledge on international manufacturing has been from the perspective of the economists, political scientists, industry analysts, or others. This book, bringing together contributions from some of the world scholars, presents a first reference for academics and practitioners in manufacturing management.

Book Management Practices in Russian Manufacturing Subsidiaries of Foreign Multinational Corporations

Download or read book Management Practices in Russian Manufacturing Subsidiaries of Foreign Multinational Corporations written by Igor Gurkov and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I report the results of observations of management practices in 20 Russian manufacturing subsidiaries of Western multinational corporations (MNCs). I argue that to counterbalance the higher country-specific risks associated with investing in Russia, MNCs impose on their Russian subsidiaries high demands for superior performance in terms of both technical and economic efficiency. My observations confirm that in most cases such demands are successfully met by the implementation of highly effective practices. Thus, I challenge several beliefs about industrial management in Russia, including the myths that Russian firms are hostile towards knowledge sharing and are wary of talent.

Book Contract Manufacturing Foreign Market Entry via Contract Manufacturing Conceptualization and Implementation in Industrial Goods Markets

This book was released on 2002-03-08 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2000 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: good (2,0), Ruhr-University of Bochum (VWA Lippstadt), language: English, abstract: There is almost no day passing without any news about mergers, acquisitions or cooperations between two or more companies. In most cases, one of the major motivations is the recognition of cost reduction potentials to stabilize profits. Daimler-Benz and Chrysler, since early 1999 known as DaimlerChrysler, merged their R & D and sourcing activities to achieve economies of scale. But for what reason do they have to stabilize profits? Because they live in a world of decreasing margins and stagnating sales. It is evident that despite their high volumes the markets of the industrialized countries are almost satisfied and lack appreciable growth rates. Product life cycles (PLCs) become gradually shorter, reducing the profit periods of products. Moreover, these markets are mostly dominated by a destructive price competition so that often companies are forced to offer at almost dumping prices in order to survive. The big German mineral oil enterprises recently claimed that the introduction of Dea′s payback card to bind their customers via a one-pfennig (!) patronage refund per consumed liter had been, in their opinion, responsible for a follow-up ruinous price "battle". At the same time, they were all fighting together against the private brands. Shortly afterwards, it was the food trade battling, which had been instigated by Wal Mart′s dumping-price policy with basic foodstuff. And this development will continue. Therefore, companies more and more initiate activities to conquer foreign markets, with many of them evading to less developed countries. This apparent contradiction turns out to be a logical step of enlarging upon business activities because many of these countries are on the threshold of becoming industrialized and consequently, they reveal huge potentials of unsatisfied demands, which, up to that point, remained unattended. Hence, even small and medium-sized enterprises turn "international", seeking advantages in distribution and sourcing as well.

Book Cultural Distance and Staffing Policy

Download or read book Cultural Distance and Staffing Policy written by Seungrae Lee and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, we resolve a dilemma in the staffing policies of foreign subsidiaries in culturally distant countries--whether to deploy more expatriates from the home country or hire more local employees from the host country's local labor market. To this end, we adopt a novel approach by considering the operational roles of foreign subsidiaries in global supply chains using a unique dataset of Korean-owned foreign manufacturing subsidiaries. Specifically, we explore the following two types of foreign subsidiaries: horizontal subsidiaries (i.e., those accessing the host country's local market by local production) and vertical subsidiaries (i.e., those performing a specific task in the multinational firm's production chain based on international differences in factor prices). We then explore how different types of foreign subsidiaries adjust their staffing policies relative to cultural distance in hierarchy and individualism. We find that cultural distance in both dimensions increases the proportion of expatriates in managerial positions for both types of foreign subsidiaries and the proportion of expatriates in non-managerial positions for vertical subsidiaries. However, for horizontal subsidiaries, cultural distance in individualism increases the proportion of local employees in non-managerial positions, whereas hierarchy does not affect the staffing policy in non-managerial positions. Thus, our study shows that foreign subsidiaries require a different composition of employees in non-managerial and managerial positions based on their role in the global supply chain and cultural distance dimensions. We also show that a proper staffing policy can improve the operational and financial performance of foreign subsidiaries. Therefore, by linking two streams of literature (i.e., operations management and human resource management), our findings suggest that operations and human resources executives should coordinate and cooperate in decision-making to achieve efficient and effective foreign subsidiary operations in multinational firms.

Book Strategy and Performance of Foreign Companies in Japan

Download or read book Strategy and Performance of Foreign Companies in Japan written by Sikander Khan and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1994 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the competitive nature of the Japanese market, a large number of foreign companies are successful in terms of profits, innovation and reverse technology. In fact, some are so successful that their profit levels in Japan exceed those elsewhere. It is an unfounded myth that the Japanese market is unprofitable for foreign companies. Foreign companies succeed in part by utilizing Japanese CEOs, a high degree of autonomy, and individual creative resources; they fail because of a lack of understanding of the intensity of competition and demanding customers in the Japanese market. A comprehensive, empirical study of a large number of foreign companies doing business in Japan show that the majority of these firms classify themselves as successful. Only six percent were failures. The companies that are successful display an ability to use their own resources to create new technologies and new products and then transfer them back to the parent company. Findings from the study suggest that there are a number of inadequacies in the existing theories of MNEs and FDIs. Practical conclusions are offered to foreign companies who plan to invest in Japan, as well as to foreign and Japanese policymakers who seek to boost FDI in Japan.
