Book Foot and Mouth Disease and Classical Swine Fever

Download or read book Foot and Mouth Disease and Classical Swine Fever written by European Commission. Directorate General for Research and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequent outbreaks of transmissible diseases like foot and mouth disease (FMD), classical swine fever (CSF) and avian influenza (bird flu) have caused devastating economic losses in the past years. Organised by the European Commission, a workshop on EU funded research in FMD and CSF brought together researchers, policy makers, international organisations and stakeholders from all over the world. Relying on the results of this workshop, it is the intention of this publication to present ongoing research activities funded by the EU in the context of outbreaks of these epizootic diseases and the new EU legislation in this field. Future research needs and ways to boost international co-operation in research are also examined.

Download or read book Tropical Animal Health written by H.S.H Seifert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-06-30 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Tropical Animal Health, describes the problems of animal diseases in the tropics, in the tropical environment, and in relation to particular production systems. In Part I, those basic scientific facts of the special host defence mechanism and of the host-pathogen relationship in the tropics, which hardly play any part in animal husbandry in temperate climates, are explained. Of special importance are the resistance mechanisms of autochthonous breeds and in contrast to them, the high susceptibility of exotic breeds in the tropics. It is explained how immuno- and chemoprophylaxis can be used as instruments for animal health measures if they are adapted to the socio-economic and ecological conditions of both the tropics and developing countries. Scientific details of immunology are presented as far as they are necessary to understand the epizo otiology of tropical diseases and diagnostic techniques for recognizing tropical diseases as well as the execution of prophylactic measures. Vector-borne diseases are the disease complexes most difficult to control since they are bound to the tropical environment, thanks to the biology of their vectors. Therefore, a special chapter has been dedicated to the description of biology and eradication of vectors of vector-borne diseases. The extent of the description varies according to the importance of the specific vector. The acaricides, insecticides and alternative methods used to control vectors are dis cussed in detail. The author has tried to present a world-wide picture, but it is not possible to cover every aspect completely.

Book Sustaining Global Surveillance and Response to Emerging Zoonotic Diseases

Download or read book Sustaining Global Surveillance and Response to Emerging Zoonotic Diseases written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-01-24 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H1N1 ("swine flu"), SARS, mad cow disease, and HIV/AIDS are a few examples of zoonotic diseases-diseases transmitted between humans and animals. Zoonotic diseases are a growing concern given multiple factors: their often novel and unpredictable nature, their ability to emerge anywhere and spread rapidly around the globe, and their major economic toll on several disparate industries. Infectious disease surveillance systems are used to detect this threat to human and animal health. By systematically collecting data on the occurrence of infectious diseases in humans and animals, investigators can track the spread of disease and provide an early warning to human and animal health officials, nationally and internationally, for follow-up and response. Unfortunately, and for many reasons, current disease surveillance has been ineffective or untimely in alerting officials to emerging zoonotic diseases. Sustaining Global Surveillance and Response to Emerging Zoonotic Diseases assesses some of the disease surveillance systems around the world, and recommends ways to improve early detection and response. The book presents solutions for improved coordination between human and animal health sectors, and among governments and international organizations. Parties seeking to improve the detection and response to zoonotic diseases-including U.S. government and international health policy makers, researchers, epidemiologists, human health clinicians, and veterinarians-can use this book to help curtail the threat zoonotic diseases pose to economies, societies, and health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past half century, deadly disease outbreaks caused by novel viruses of animal origin - Nipah virus in Malaysia, Hendra virus in Australia, Hantavirus in the United States, Ebola virus in Africa, along with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), several influenza subtypes, and the SARS (sudden acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) coronaviruses - have underscored the urgency of understanding factors influencing viral disease emergence and spread. Emerging Viral Diseases is the summary of a public workshop hosted in March 2014 to examine factors driving the appearance, establishment, and spread of emerging, re-emerging and novel viral diseases; the global health and economic impacts of recently emerging and novel viral diseases in humans; and the scientific and policy approaches to improving domestic and international capacity to detect and respond to global outbreaks of infectious disease. This report is a record of the presentations and discussion of the event.

Book Animal Disease Surveillance and Survey Systems

Download or read book Animal Disease Surveillance and Survey Systems written by M. D. Salman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable text presents methods and techniques for conducting an animal disease surveillance program, and developing an animal health moitoring system. The text is a 'recipe book' for these techniques as it explains modern techniques, while emphasizing the fundamentals and principles of using these techniques. The book is targeted to epidemiologists and other animal health authorities who are working in national, regional, and international programs. The book can be used as a text for professional and postgraduate training curricula. This text will be of value in veterinary epidemiology and regulatory medicine, where there is need for a concise collection of material on animal disease monitoring, surveillance, and reporting strategies. This need arises from a new era of international trade regulations based on animal diseases, new demands for accountability in utilization of research funds, and calls for prioritizing and economically justifying animal health regulatory and diagnostic activities.

Book excerpt: Discover how the application of novel multidisciplinary, integrative approaches and technologies are dramatically changing our understanding of the pathogenesis of infectious diseases and their treatments. Each article presents the state of the science, with a strong emphasis on new and emerging medical applications. The Encyclopedia of Infectious Diseases is organized into five parts. The first part examines current threats such as AIDS, malaria, SARS, and influenza. The second part addresses the evolution of pathogens and the relationship between human genetic diversity and the spread of infectious diseases. The next two parts highlight the most promising uses of molecular identification, vector control, satellite detection, surveillance, modeling, and high-throughput technologies.
