Book IMPROVING the Performance of Irrigated Agriculture

Download or read book IMPROVING the Performance of Irrigated Agriculture written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Irrigation Management Institute (IIMI) has identifield a number of challenges facing irrigated agriculture in developing countries. Over the next decade, the wold's population in expected to grow from five bilion to six. Extrapolating from World Bank data on current food needs, IIMI estimated that irrigated agriculture will have to average output increase of at least 3.5 percent per year to keep pace with the increasing population. This will happen in the context of increasing water scarties and competing demands on existing supplies, and at a time when the most economically attractive irrigation sites have already been exploited. IIMI perceives that while food production growth rates been satisfactory in South and East Asia, the same is nottrue for other regions of the developing wold, nor is there any certainty that today's production can be sustained. The Institute also notes that while there is universal agreement that irrigation has contributed significantly to previous increases in agricultural productivity, there is equal agreement that the performance of irrigation projects has been suboptimal, whether measured against design objectives or production potential.

Book Irrigation Management

Download or read book Irrigation Management written by Dr. Martin Burton and published by CABI. This book was released on 2010 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many countries irrigated agriculture consumes a large proportion of the available water resources, often over 70% of the total. There is considerable pressure to release water for other uses and, as a sector, irrigated agriculture will have to increase the efficiency and productivity of its water use. This is particularly true for manually operated irrigation systems managed by government agencies, which provide water for a large number of users on small landholdings and represent 60% of the total irrigated area worldwide. --

Book Irrigation induced Salinity

Download or read book Irrigation induced Salinity written by Dina L. Umali and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a synthesis of 15 success stories in the production, processing, and marketing of high-value food products (HVF) in developing countries in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. High-value food products, such as fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, meats, fish, dairy products, and vegetable oils, are defined as having high intrinsic value or a high rate of value added through processing. Trade in these products has expanded while trade and prices for other agricultural products, such as most staple crops, have stagnated or declined. The growing trade in HVF has prompted policymakers in developing countries to examine more closely how they can expand and diversify their exports of these products. This study explores the technical, organizational, and commercial challenges facing those in HVF export development. It identifies common market and institutional factors that have contributed to the growth and international competitiveness in HVF trade. Particular note is made of the roles of the private and public sectors and of the effect of the policy environment. It examines the effect of institutional coordination on the stages of production, processing, and trade. An annex summarizes 12 case studies of the development and performance of food commodity markets. It includes export of fresh vegetables from Kenya in the 1960s, shrimp from Thailand in the 1970s, and processed tomatoes from Chile in the 1980s.
