It has been our great honor to welcome all the participants to the 4th Asia-Pacific Management Research Conference was held in Surabaya, Indonesia, on May 18th–20th, 2022 as a hybrid conference (virtualy conference). I recalled formulating the concept and conducting this conference with the Research Center and Case Clearing House (RC-CCH) Team back in 2017. The conference encourages fresh and impactful studies that address the latest issues and topics, particularly in economics, management, business, and accounting. The forum particularly welcomes the discussion and sharing among research fellows in a semi-formal academic setting. As we reach the fourth conference, we are confident that we will maintain a contribution to the global literature. It is undeniable that the theme of the COVID-19 Pandemic is the main issue of this fourth conference, but rather than focusing on the misery, we look for models, technologies, and concepts that are beneficial for the economy and businesses to grow toward the new normal. This conference received 136 abstracts, of which 57 were accepted articles in Atlantis Proceeding.

Book excerpt: Japan’s Household Registration System (koseki seido) is an extremely powerful state instrument, and is socially entrenched with a long history of population governance, social control and the maintenance of social order. It provides identity whilst at the same time imposing identity upon everyone registered, and in turn, the state receives validity and legitimacy from the registration of its inhabitants. The study of the procedures and mechanisms for identifying and documenting people provides an important window into understanding statecraft, and by examining the koseki system, this book provides a keen insight into social and political change in Japan. By looking through the lens of the koseki system, the book takes both an historical as well as a contemporary approach to understanding Japanese society. In doing so, it develops our understanding of contemporary Japan within the historical context of population management and social control; reveals the social effects and influence of the koseki system throughout its history; and presents new insights into citizenship, nationality and identity. Furthermore, this book develops our knowledge of state functions and indeed the nation state itself, through engaging critically with important issues relating to the koseki while at the same time providing a platform for further investigation. While the new conceptual lenses may generate insights that improve responses to the world’s water challenges, their practical use is often encumbered by ambiguity and confusion. This book applies critical scrutiny to a prominent set of new but widely used terms, in order to clarify their meanings and improve the basis on which we identify and tackle the world’s water challenges. More specifically, the book takes stock of what several of the more prominent new terms mean, reviews variation in interpretation, explores how they are measured, and discusses their respective added value. It makes many implicit differences between terms explicit and aids understanding and use of these terms by both students and professionals. At the same time, it does not ignore the legitimately contested nature of some concepts. Further, the book enables greater precision on the interpretational options for the various terms, and for the value that they add to water policy and its implementation.
