Book Management Aptitude of Entrepreneurs

Download or read book Management Aptitude of Entrepreneurs written by Dan J. Knutson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2000. The basic problems investigated in this book arose from the author's speculation that many individuals who have what it takes to be an entrepreneur may simply not have what it takes to be an effective manager. In fact, some of the characteristics that are essential to the entrepreneurial drive may be detrimental to the development of solid management skills. This may be one reason that so many entrepreneurs fail in business-- Certain elements in their personality make-up may actually prevent them from being, or even becoming, good managers. The overall objective of the study was to learn if there is a significant relationship between entrepreneurs and professional managers in terms of their basic aptitudes toward managing. The research was carried out by examining a number of the most important underpinning psychosocial aspects that have been demonstrated as valid predictors of management performance.

Download or read book Educating Managers for Business and Government written by Samuel Paul and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managers, in both the private and public sectors, are increasingly recognized as critical in the use of scarce resources for national development. There is no unanimity of opinion, however, regarding the models or approaches to management education that are most appropriate in different environmental settings. Traditionally, management education has been dominated by the need to train executives for large-scale enterprises. But the 1980s has seen a global trend toward the deconcentration of business. The future development of the indigenous business sector in the developing world depends heavily on the emergence of small and medium scale entrepreneurs. The roles of public administrators with respect to regulatory and developmental activities enterprise are also changing. This trend is evident not only in market-oriented countries, but also in socialist countries, and many developing countries. This volume encompasses management education for each of these groups--the managers and future managers of large-scale enterprises; entrepreneurs and small business people; and public administrators. Its purpose is to review worldwide trends and developments in management education for information about curriculum design, research and teaching methodology, and institutional policies and administration. Experience is drawn from recognized universities, educational organizations, civil service institutes, and corporations in several major countries and regions of the world. A number of tables and figure appear in this volume along with references. A seminar participants list also is included. (Author/DB)

Book Valuing an Entrepreneurial Enterprise

Download or read book Valuing an Entrepreneurial Enterprise written by David B. Audretsch and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2012-02-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrepreneurs generally lack the marketing capabilities necessary to bring their new product to market. To engage the resources required to do this, they must somehow place a value on the enterprise. However, all of the methods of valuation currently available are based on the use of historical or current revenues, and therefore are not applicable to an entrepreneurial enterprise with a first-time product. In Valuing an Entrepreneurial Enterprise, Audretsch and Link present a valuation method uniquely tailored to emerging technology-based ventures that have no revenue history to lean on. Unlike many traditional methods, theirs does not take into account the track record of companies and products similar to that being valuated. Instead, it draws on economic theory to formulate a solution to the problem. The book develops conceptual ground, including trends in entrepreneurship, models of innovation, and the economics of standards and entrepreneurship policy. The authors review the traditional valuation methods and illustrate them numerically with case studies to show how the traditional approach produces an incorrect valuation. The core of the book presents the new methodology and demonstrates how it avoids the pitfalls of past approaches. The authors also show how public policy on technology and infrastructure changes valuations of start-up firms in areas such as stem-cell products and renewable fuels projects. Valuing an Entrepreneurial Enterprise will serve as a valuable resource for advanced students, economists, financial planners, and valuators interested in new valuation methods and the theory behind them, as well as those interested in entrepreneurship.

Book Public Sector Entrepreneurship

Download or read book Public Sector Entrepreneurship written by Dennis Patrick Leyden and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public sector entrepreneurship refers to innovative public policy initiatives that generate greater economic prosperity. These initiatives can transform a status quo economic environment into one that is more conducive to economic units engaging in creative and innovative activities in the face of uncertainty. Public Sector Entrepreneurship traces the historical development of the concepts of private and public sector entrepreneurship and their connection to the separate notions of risk and uncertainty. Based on a formal conceptualization of these notions, the book illustrates throughout public sector entrepreneurship in practice using examples from U.S. technology and innovation policy. Technology policy-policy to enhance the application of new knowledge, learned through science, to some known problem-and innovation policy-policy to enhance the commercialization of a technology-are quintessential examples of the public sector recognizing and exploiting opportunities to bring about change and efficiency. Using this concept of public sector entrepreneurship as the lens to view the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, the Stevenson-Wydler Act of 1980, the R&E Tax Credit of 1981, Small Business Innovation Development Act of 1982, the National Cooperative Research Act of 1984, and the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 affords us the ability to find elements of commonality among these policies and to discuss their impact on the U.S. economy from the perspective of entrepreneurial action.

Book A History of Entrepreneurship

Download or read book A History of Entrepreneurship written by Robert F Hébert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-05-18 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book establishes a chronological trace of the entrepreneur as treated in economic literature in order to give a more wholesome perspective to contemporary writings and teachings on entrepreneurship. It focuses on the nature and role of the entrepreneur, and of entrepreneurship, as revealed in economic literature as early as the eighteenth century, when Richard Cantillon first coined the term 'entrepreneur'. The authors then trace how Joseph Schumpeter's perspective, among other’s, on entrepreneurship came to dominate the world's understanding of the term. Due to Schumpeter’s dominant influence, entrepreneurship has come to occupy a primary role in the theory of economic development. In this book Hébert and Link discuss various key topics including the German Tradition, the Austrian and the English School of thought as well as individuals such as Alfred Marshall and Jeremy Bentham. The historical survey also illustrates the tension that often exists between "theory" and "practice" and how it has been difficult for economic theory to assimilate a core concept that plays a vital role in social and economic change. Finally, the book exposes the many different facets of entrepreneurship as they have been perceived by some of the great economists throughout the ages.

Book Developing Successful Leadership

Download or read book Developing Successful Leadership written by Brent Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has shown that school leadership is second only to classroom teaching in its effect on pupil learning. As the demands on management teams become ever more complex, this volume offers a fresh and expansive view on the challenges to be met in developing a leadership career. With contributions from some of the most accomplished commentators on school leadership and management from around the world, this book moves away from the simple ‘how to’ of becoming a principal, focusing instead on the wider issues of becoming a successful leader. The central aim has been to assemble powerful statements from international authorities that encapsulate leading-edge thinking on a group of interconnected themes based on the notion of developing successful leadership in, and beyond, schools. In so doing the text examines strategies for existing leaders developing their full capacity as well as enhancing the skills of those new to, or aspiring to, a leadership role. The chapters contributed by a carefully selected group of leading educationalists present insights on a number of central themes, including: developing new skill sets in leadership, the ethical and moral dimensions of leading an organisation, Leadership for instructional and pedagogical success, developing leadership capacity and capability through strategic activity. Rather than taking a technical approach of how to undertake the managerial or administrative tasks, the authors seek instead to develop critical leadership perspectives and skills, with chapters on vitally important topics such as strategies for maximizing the potential of the leadership team as a whole. They draw not only upon the literature in the field of educational leadership but also a wider literature in the field of business and management. This diversity of perspective ensures this book’s appeal to a broad international readership.
