Book Management and Breeding of Horses Classic Reprint

Download or read book Management and Breeding of Horses Classic Reprint written by Merritt Wesley Harper and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management and Breeding of Horses This book is an attempt at arranging information useful to the farmer, breeder and student. It is the outgrowth of experience both as a practical horse breeder and an instructor. The book includes a discussion of the economic usefulness, judging and allied subjects, early history, a study of the breeds, breeding, feeding, care and management of both horses and mules. Special emphasis is placed on the management of the brood mare as well as that of the colt from the time the mare is bred until the colt is ready for farm work or the market. This includes a discussion of the methods of training, overcoming undesirable habits, fitting, harnessing and the like. Because of the increasing popularity and field of usefulness, the mule is given prominence. This necessitates a consideration of the several breeds of jacks, as well as special suggestions on the care and development of the mule-breeding jack, as not all jacks are suitable for siring mules. In choosing the subject matter a wide search has been made and it has been necessary to eliminate much valuable data, as there is quite an accumulation of material upon the production, care and use of the horse. In this elimination, the author has attempted to keep in mind the needs of the farmer, breeder and student. The arrangement of the subject matter in a book of this class is important. The outline employed has been chosen because in experience it seems the most favorable for the presentation of the text. Following a discussion of judging considerable space is given to the history and development of the several breeds of horses, each breed being discussed in a separate chapter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse: Its Keep Management There is a chapter on breeding - stating how many valuable mares are practically lost when they get to a certain age, or, in other words, how many good mares are sold for a trifle, which, with very little trouble and forethought, might be sent to some farmer in the country and bred from. This can easily be done. In some instances a colt can be reared for from £35 to £40 up to when it is four years old, and if from an extraordinarily good mare it sometimes turns out worth from £70 to £100. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse, Its Treatment in Health and Disease, Vol. 2: With a Complete Guide to Breeding, Training and Management The Shetland - There is not much to be written about the Shetland pony that is not generally known, but it is satisfactory to be able to assert that these useful little horses are making steady headway in the south of England. Possibly the Shetland is the only variety of the equine race of which specimens can be found that possess the blood of no outside cross, and it is upon the sterile moors of Shetland that this pony can be found in all its native purity. Beyond all doubt the inclemency of the climate and the poverty of the fare to which he and his ancestors have been subjected are responsible not only for the diminutive proportions of the Shetland, but for the robustness of his constitution, for no animal unless absolutely sound could exist and propagate his species amidst the hard ships which have been the daily lot of the Shetland for generations. He is a sturdy, cloddy-built little animal, standing about 10 hands at the shoulder, though of course both taller and smaller specimens are to be met with in plenty, and no doubt owing to climate in uences the coat of the Shetland is extremely dense. For his inches he is a marvel of strength and activity, which properties have rendered the Shetland's services invalu able in coal-mines, where the exertions of undersized animals possessed of plenty of power are most useful in bringing coal to the bottom of the shaft. This variety is being a good deal benefited by the Shetland Pony Stud-book Society, which is doing good work by interesting the public in the breed; but the inherent good qualities of the Shetland will always ensure his finding friends in all parts where his merits become properly understood, his docility and intelligence rendering him a very useful animal for the purposes of juvenile equestrians. Download or read book The Horse Its Treatment in Health and Disease Vol 1 written by J. Wortley Axe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse, Its Treatment in Health and Disease, Vol. 1: With a Complete Guide to Breeding Training and Management The object of the editor in preparing this work has been to set out in one compact whole some of the most useful information relating to the horse. The origin and development of the horse, his varieties, his breeding, training, and management, in health and disease, with other cognate subjects, have each in turn been considered. To render the book more intelligible and useful to the reader, each group of diseases is preceded by a brief reference to the anatomy and physiology of the parts therein concerned, and the whole has been written in the simplest possible language consistent with a clear enunciation of the subject. Having regard to the extent and variety of the matter to be dealt with, it was necessary to seek the co-operation of outside help, and I have much pleasure in saying how readily this was accorded by my friends Sir George Brown, C.B., Dr. Fleming, Professor Shave, Mr. Harold Leeney, Mr. Hunting, Mr. Vero Shaw, Mr. Lupton, Mr. Malcolm, and others, and how much I owe them my grateful acknowledgments. The greatest care has been taken in the selection and production of the very large series of illustrations which will be found in this book. Of these many are in colours, embracing portraits of prize-winning animals of the leading varieties, and drawings from nature illustrating anatomical and pathological subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse His Breeding, Care and Use During the greater part of my life it has fallen to my lot to have a great deal to do with horses; in breeding them and studying them, in raising them and breaking them to harness, in their care and feeding and in the cure of their vices, when they were so unfortunate as to have them, a large part of my time has been occupied. The knowl edge that is gained in the school of experience is generally conceded to be of the most valuable and practical kind, and it has occurred to me that some of the things I have thus been able to learn may be of much value to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse and His Diseases: Embracing His History and Varieties, Breeding and Management and Vices; With the Diseases to Which He Is Subject, and the Remedies Best Adapted to Their Cure Although in the history of Abraham frequent mention is made of the ass, of the camel, of flocks and herds, sheep and oxen, there is no allusion to the horse; nor, indeed, do we find any such until we reach the time of Joseph. 'in the reign of that Pharaoh in whose service. Joseph was, wagons were sent by the king's command into Canaan, to bring thence into Egypt Jacob and his sons, their wives and their little ones, during the prevalence of the famine against which Joseph had provided. It is not recorded that those wagons were drawn by horses; but the inference that such was the fact is by no means irrational, when we remember that it was during the continu ance of this famine that horses are first mentioned, having been taken by Joseph in exchange for bread from the Egyp tian cultivators and cattle-breeders; that on the death of, msroar' or m noses. Book Riding and Driving Horses

Download or read book Riding and Driving Horses written by Walter Gilbey and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Riding and Driving Horses: Their Breeding and Rearing The Chair was taken by Mr. William Eve, the President of the Farmer's Club. There was a large attendance of Members and Visitors present. Mr. Walter Gilbey, of Elsenham Hall, Elsenham, Essex, introduced the subject as follows: - For many years the subjects dealt with in this Address have interested me deeply. Twelve months ago I made application to Mr. Druce, the Secretary of this Club, to be allowed to call attention to them, but was unfortunately too late, all arrangements for 1884 having been then made. Very many causes have been assigned for the decline of horse-breeding. It will be noticed that I accept one only, to wit, the failure in persevering to raise animals of size, quality, and value. The principal object which I have in view, therefore, is to make our shortcomings in this respect more generally known, and to offer suggestions for breeding superior horses, as these latter will always command a ready sale at prices remunerative to the breeder. It is an admitted fact that the true-bred English hunter, hack, carriage and draught horse cannot be equalled in any other country.
