Book excerpt: In the theology of Saint Silouan and Saint Sophrony, man is the target of divine visitations that serve to make him aware of the image of Christ within him. God created man in His ‘image and likeness’. Although this image has become distorted, the purpose of man’s life in the Church is that it should be perfectly restored. Saint Sophrony referred to the image of God in man as man’s ‘hypostasis’ or ‘personhood’. He taught that this image cannot be realised without the witness of a saint or elder, who demonstrates likeness unto Christ and bears His word. For this reason, he often explained the principle of personhood through reference to the life and writings of Saint Silouan. In this book, Archimandrite Zacharias, the disciple of Saint Sophrony, likewise presents the principle of personhood through the lives of the elders of his monastery, Saint Silouan and Saint Sophrony. He also examines attributes of personhood in terms of dogma and spiritual practice. Throughout Man, the Target of God, Father Zacharias elaborates on aspects of the theme of personhood which were previously introduced in his doctorate Christ, Our Way and Our Life-A Presentation of the Theology of Saint Sophrony. He developed his thought in a series of lectures in Athens and America, which later became the basis for this book.

Book What Is God Like

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The late, beloved Rachel Held Evans answers many children's first question about God in this gorgeous picture book, fully realized by her friend Matthew Paul Turner, the bestselling author of When God Made You. Children who are introduced to God, through attending church or having loved ones who speak about God, often have a lot of questions, including this ever-popular one: What is God like? The late Rachel Held Evans loved the Bible and loved showing God’s love through the words and pictures found in that ancient text. Through these pictures from the Bible, children see that God is like a shepherd, God is like a star, God is like a gardener, God is like the wind, and more. God is a comforter and support. And whenever a child is unsure, What Is God Like? encourages young hearts to “think about what makes you feel safe, what makes you feel loved, and what makes you feel brave. That's what God is like.”

Book Man Jesus Loved

    Book Details:
  • Author : Theodore W. Jr. Jennings
  • Publisher : The Pilgrim Press
  • Release : 2009-06-24
  • ISBN : 0829820744
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book Man Jesus Loved written by Theodore W. Jr. Jennings and published by The Pilgrim Press. This book was released on 2009-06-24 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homosexuality has been at the forefront of debate in the church for the last quarter-century, with Biblical interpretation at the heart of this debate. Some biblical passages appear to condemn certain same-sex relationships or erotic practices, resulting in a challenge to clergy as well as laity regarding the preaching and understanding of these Biblical passages. In "The Man Jesus Loved," Jennings proposes a gay-affirmative reading of the Bible in the hope of respecting the integrity of these texts and making them more clear as well as persuasive. This reading suggests that the exclusion of persons on the basis of their sexual orientation or same-sex practices fundamentally distorts the Bible generally and the traditions concerning Jesus in particular.

Book The Heart of Man God s Target

Download or read book The Heart of Man God s Target written by Alfredo Harold Geil and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Heart of Man; God's Target - Part One" is Harold's autobiography. It is a captivating account beginning with the author's parents leaving Germany at the end of World War I, and settling in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where Harold was born and raised. He became fluent in three languages, and at age twenty was drafted into the Argentinean Army. Soon thereafter, he was chosen among thousands as the interpreter for the 1952 Argentinean Equestrian Olympic Team, that toured Europe for seven months. After discharge from the Army, Harold enjoyed working for two international German corporations, where he held several management positions; but political upheaval prompted Harold to fulfill his dream to leave for the USA. Part Two outlines hindrances that prevent Christians from truly enjoying God, by failing to appropriate the power, promises and faith of Jesus Christ. Harold Alfredo Geil is a sincere man of God, who spent years in the corporate world as an electrical engineer. While still in Argentina he married his high school sweetheart, and was blessed with two boys. Later in the USA they were blessed with a daughter. But, shortly before retirement, his wife of 28 years died. Through the pain of this experience, and other hardships, his desire to comfort the brokenhearted increased. In 1984 Harold married Jeanie who shared his vision for ministry. Together they have five children, twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Harold and his wife Jeanie have been a tangible gift of love to many. In 1995 they founded "Fullness of Christ Ministries, Inc.;" bringing God's healing to the brokenhearted. So, it should be of no surprise that a man, who walks so closely with God, exudes genuine fatherly love; and the preciousness they both manifest, extends into their marriage, and to their children and families.

Book The Marriage Builder

    Book Details:
  • Author : Larry Crabb
  • Publisher : Zondervan
  • Release : 2013-05-07
  • ISBN : 0310337046
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book The Marriage Builder written by Larry Crabb and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author Larry Crabb cuts to the heart of the biblical view of marriage: the "one-flesh" relationship. He argues convincingly that the deepest needs of human personality--security and significance--ultimately cannot be satisfied by a marriage partner. We need to turn to the Lord, rather than our spouse, to satisfy our needs. This frees both partners for "soul oneness," a commitment to minister to our spouse's needs rather than manipulating them to meet our own needs. With "soul oneness" comes renewed "body oneness," where couples enjoy sexual pleasure as an expression and outgrowth of a personal relationship. The Marriage Builder also identifies three building blocks essential to constructing marriage: the grace of God, true marriage commitment, and acceptance of one's mate. Discussion questions are included to aid couples who want to dig into it and apply the principles to their own lives and marriages. The Marriage Builder is for anyone who longs to transform marriage from trial to triumph.

Book Irresistible

Download or read book Irresistible written by Andy Stanley and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at the earliest Christian movement reveals what made the new faith so compelling...and what we need to change today to make it so again. Once upon a time there was a version of the Christian faith that was practically irresistible. After all, what could be more so than the gospel that Jesus ushered in? Why, then, isn't it the same with Christianity today? Author and pastor Andy Stanley is deeply concerned with the present-day church and its future. He believes that many of the solutions to our issues can be found by investigating our roots. In Irresistible, Andy chronicles what made the early Jesus Movement so compelling, resilient, and irresistible by answering these questions: What did first-century Christians know that we don't—about God's Word, about their lives, about love? What did they do that we're not doing? What makes Christianity so resistible in today's culture? What needs to change in order to repeat the growth our faith had at its beginning? Many people who leave or disparage the faith cite reasons that have less to do with Jesus than with the conduct of his followers. It's time to hit pause and consider the faith modeled by our first-century brothers and sisters who had no official Bible, no status, and little chance of survival. It's time to embrace the version of faith that initiated—against all human odds—a chain of events resulting in the most significant and extensive cultural transformation the world has ever seen. This is a version of Christianity we must remember and re-embrace if we want to be salt and light in an increasingly savorless and dark world.
