This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man's Partnership With Divine Providence There is scarce any doctrine in the whole compass of revelation, which is of deeper importance than this. And, at the same time, there is scarce any that is so little regarded, and perhaps so little understood.' The Book of Divine Providence is bigger than the Bible. It covers the course of universal history, it includes the story of all nations and all lives. It deals with the creation of the earth, it traces its progress and development from generation to genera tion. The subject first wove its spell around the writer when he reached that memorable question in the Methodist Catechism: 'what is God's providence?' and learnt the answer: 'his most holy, wise, and powerful preservation and government of all His creatures and all their actions.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Concerning the Divine Providence The publisher of the present edition of Dr. Sherlock's celebrated work on the "Divine Providence," feels assured that he need offer no apology for bringing it out at this time. The great importance of the subject; the unquestioned ability with which it is discussed; the fact, that for many years the work has been out of print, and the frequent calls that have been made for it, during his several years' experience in the book business, together with the high estimation in which it is held by the following clergymen, who have cheerfully furnished recommendatory notices, he thinks fully warrant him in presenting it before the public in a new and greatly improved dress. Recommendatory Notices. Rev. J. L. Read: - I heartily approve of your intention to publish "Sherlock on Providence." I read the work years ago, and have regarded it ever since as one of the most valuable theological works in my library. You have my best wishes for success. Dr. Sherlock's Essay on "Divine Providence" has earned for itself a reputation amongst the pious and thinking both of this and the Old World. To those who have not had the opportunity or privilege of knowing its worth, it may be said, (to others it is needless, ) that it is a most judicious, scriptural, and practical discussion of this difficult, but most delightful doctrine. Book Providence in Reference to Nations

Download or read book Providence in Reference to Nations written by P. G. Mcgregor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Providence in Reference to Nations: A Lecture Delivered Before the Halifax Young Men's Christian Association, April 6th, 1858 But Providence in the Opinion of many has reference exclu sively to individuals. Corporate bodies are proverbially skep tical. Christian men in companies have oft consented to run steamers and railway trains on the Lord's day, and yet never dreamed of opening their own shops or offices; and good men are silent when those who in 'high places are acting for them and others, are leading the nation in a course of hostility to the law of God. Responsibility is forgotten or thought to be dissipated among the million like the electric fluid, when it strikes earth or ocean and diffuses itself in ten thousand dirceo tions. Such silence is wrong. Responsibility remains. It is indeed diffused over all, and the righteous Lord will treat cor porate bodies as well as individuals, according to their deeds. If the nation exists by divine appointment and if the legitimate functions of government are ordained of God, then surely it is amenable to divine law. If Christian men forming an insu rance company or a railway company are bound in their cor porate capacity to act rightly, so are they who constitute a. Commonwealth, whether civic, provincial or national; and when we open the Bible we find in fact that nations as such are ad dressed, commanded, encouraged and threatened. They do not present two distinct and parallel series of phenomena. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Providence: As Manifested Through Israel This unreserved submission to the voice from heaven is not, however, inconsistent with the desire and the endeavour to understand, as far as possible, the designs of that Provi dence whose guidance is acknowledged. Though there is sin and folly in seeking to forestall or change the Divine counsels, there is piety and wisdom in striving to comprehend them when they are disclosed; because that obedience must ever be the most perfect which is the most enlightened. Moses was reproved for his backwardness in fulfilling his mission to his brethren in bondage, and vengeance from the Lord fol lowed Jonah when he would have evaded his duty of pro phesying destruction to Nineveh, because in both cases these prophets ventured to prejudge the event which was in the hand of God: but the people were also rebuked when they yielded a blind external obedience only, instead of the ready cooperation of the heart with the will of God; and were per petually exhorted to examine into and understand his ways, that their obedience might be not only strict but enlightened.
