Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Modern Reformed Theology In America Has shown astonishing variety in its expression. Grouped under the name "Reformed" are, in fact, five diverse traditions - the Princeton theology, Westminster Calvinism, the Dutch schools, Southern Reformed thought, and Neoorthodoxy. This book provides penetrating analysis of these five traditions and the two leading theologians of each. The result is an important advance in our understanding of what being Reformed has meant and what it should now mean in the late twentieth century." -- Publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visser 't Hooft and the Shaping of Ecumenical Theology Visser 't Hooft is, perhaps, the most distinguished figure in the modern ecumenical movement, emerging in the postwar decades as a pivotal figure. Under his leadership, the World Council of Churches was officially constituted in 1948 by 147 Protestant and Orthodox Catholic denominations, and the organization grew to include nearly 300 denominations in the following decades. Visser 't Hooft played a major role in the inclusion of churches from communist countries in the World Council, and he also sought to enlarge the role played by African, Asian, and Orthodox churches in the organization. He served as editor of the Ecumenical Review from 1948 to 1966. He was also the author of numerous books on the ecumenical movement and the nature and functions of the church.
Download or read book A Stranger in the House of God written by John Koessler and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith

Download or read book New Testament Pattern written by Jean-Louis Leuba and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2022-11-24 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the nature of Christian unity? Is it Sacramental, Organic, Federal, Spiritual? These are questions that demand careful examination when different Christian traditions are drawing closer to one another in a common desire to heal the divisions that hinder the witness of the Church to the world. In any attempt to deal with these questions, full weight must be given to the evidence of the New Testament itself: what kind of unity does it reveal? In New Testament Pattern, Jean-Louis Leuba reveals a two-fold framework of unity in the New Testament. One strand - in its witness to Christ, to the Apostles and to the Church - emphasises the institutional, traditional and particular. The other strand emphasises the personal, dynamic and universal. Yet the two strands are actually one. Their unity is more comprehensive, more creative, than any undifferentiated unity could be, with important implications for ecumenism and broader scriptural study.

Download or read book The Church written by Gabriel J. Fackre and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest volume in Gabriel Fackre's "Christian Story" finds the dedicated ecumenist attempting to examine the connections, or lack thereof, between worldwide ecumenical progress and the character of local churches as he observes them in twenty-first-century America. Drawing from his own fifty-year experience in the church as pastor, teacher, and parishioner, Fackre breaks open the myth of the church experience and exposes the reality of modern worship on a local level. "The Church" is rich in insight and fertile in its range of suggestions, most of them aimed at pastors and aspiring pastors -- the men and women who will carry the teachings of the church, its "kerygma," into the next generation and the ones that follow.

Download or read book Tracking the Jews written by Carolyn Sanzenbacher and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracking the Jews analyses the beliefs, ideas, concepts, arguments and policies of an unprecedented conversionary initiative during the years immediately before, during and after the Holocaust. From the rubbles of World War I to the ashes of World War II, it reconstructs previously unknown relations between a Protestant framework for global evangelisation of Jews, the network of international bodies that constituted the ecumenical movement of the early twentieth century, and the streams of thought on the Jewish question that flowed through its networking channels. Based on more than twenty thousand pages of archival documents, it forces from the shadows the conversionary issues in which nineteen centuries of negative Church teachings on Jews were rooted, bringing to light a field of transnationally shared beliefs about the place, role and destiny of Jews in world society. It sets into sobering relief the paradoxical ways in which a broad international toleration of traditional anti-Judaism allowed, under a banner of Christian benevolence, a transnational public discourse of antisemitic ideas masked in conversionary language.
