Published on the occasion of the exhibition in Venice, the volume pays suitable homage to Lee Miller, pioneer of surrealism in photography, placing her on a par with Man Ray, whose work tended to overshadow her both during her lifetime and after. The heart of the project lies the relationship between Lee Miller and Man Ray - which blossomed in Paris in 1929 and ended in 1932 - with a focus on their lives, careers and relationships at that time; it also documents the effect they both had on each other and how it inspired their work, including the photographic solarisation technique Man Ray adopted to the point that shots by Miller were erroneously attributed to Ray. The volume also presents portraits by Man Ray of friends and important protagonists of the artistic period: Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Giorgio de Chirico, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dalí and surrealist shots of Lee Miller in which he seeks to investigate and reveal her soul and torments.

Fashion as such did not seem to be a particular interest of his, but dressmaking was part of his youth and photographing fashion played a crucial role throughout his career. The way he portrayed women and their clothing continues to influence fashion photographers today. Man Ray used new and unexpected angles, employed artistic staging, and applied such innovative processes as solarization and multiple exposure to his fashion photography. In recent decades, fashion designers continue to find inspiration in his Surrealist imagery. This is most notably true for Belgian designers, with their avant-garde mindset. Completely in line with the concept of Surrealism, these references are often subconscious. The first reference to Man Ray in Belgian fashion, however, was in fact explicit and can be placed squarely at the entrance of the Brussels-based Norine couture house.00Fashion not only provided an income and international recognition for Man Ray but also influenced his visual language. That vocabulary had been nurtured from an early age by dressmaking attributes that must un-avoidably carry more meaning for a tailor?s son than for someone else. His images of mannequins and fragmented body parts were consistent with the visual language of the Surrealists, and were, under the influence of his fashion photography, not only uncanny but also aesthetically appealing. He quickly fell in with the Dadaists, and his art changed. He pioneered a new art form, a cameraless photograph he called the 'Rayograph'. Champs délicieux documents that year in Paris by reproducing the correspondence between Man Ray and Howald and by publishing Howald's personal copy of Ray's album (also Champs délicieux) from that year - the first significant body of Ray's work. By placing these images in the context of the letters, Champs délicieux recreates an important turning point in Ray's career and a definitive moment in art history. This collection, exhibited in the fall of 2000 by co-publisher University of Toronto Art Centre, was edited by Steven Manford, who is currently assembling, with Timothy Baum, a catalogue raisonné of the Rayographs.
