Book excerpt: As late as the beginning of the nineteenth century, despite the many years of direct contact with European traders and the influx of European goods, most African societies still produced their own iron and its products, or obtained them from neighbouring communities through local trade. The quality of iron products was such that, despite competition from European imports, local iron production survived into the early twentieth century in some parts of the continent. The production process covered prospecting, mining, smelting, and forging. Different types of ore were available all over the continent and were extracted by shallow or alluvial mining. A variety of skills were required for building furnaces, producing charcoal, smelting, and forging iron into goods. Iron production was generally not an enclave activity but a process that fulfilled the totality of socio-economic needs. It also fit the gender division of labour within communities.

From being a largely descriptive subject, with a few under tones concerned with such things as fisheries, pollution or control of blackflies, it has evolved into a discipline with hypotheses, such as the River Continuum Concept (Vannote et a/. 1980), and even a book suggesting that it offers opportunity for the testing of ecological theory (Barnes & Minshall 1983). However, perusal of the literature reveals that, although some of the very early studies were concerned with large rivers (references in Hynes 1970), the great mass of the work that has been done on running water has been on streams and small rivers, and information on larger rivers is either on such limited topics as fisheries or plankton, scattered among the journals, or not available to the general limnologist. The only exceptions are a few books in this series of publications, such as those on the Nile (Rz6ska 1976), the Volga (Morduckai Boltovskoi 1979) and the Amazon {Sioli 1984), and the recent compendium by Whitton (1984) on European rivers, among which there are a few that rate as large.

Steve, personally thwarted an ambush on a group of famous Congo mercenaries known as the Wild Geese. He describes incidents of black magic, kidnapping, arson, gunrunning and people trafficking. He successfully detected the first computer fraud in the territory, and later for the first time, brought back a European fugitive in a series of fraud cases to face justice, from the atrocious apartheid country of South Africa; of being given a government award for his part in combatting the slaughter of wildlife and in taking part in the search for the downed aircraft of the United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld – still the subject of much controversy today. Steve's life was saved several times by his courageous Doberman, Alex regarded as a witch doctor by local tribes. This is the true, action-packed, unadulterated stories of those frantic and dangerous years, where a young police inspector found himself confronted by fearsome actions and events well beyond his complete understanding while serving in the elite police force in Northern Rhodesia now Zambia, which was then a British Protectorate prior to independence. Steve has strived not to duplicate any of these true stories, which provides an indication of just how involved and energises his dedicated years of service really were. Nevertheless, he pushed on regardless, with the realisation that he was doing an important and necessary job for the benefit of the unprivileged peoples of the country; yet the police were fighting on two fronts, trying to protect the vulnerable citizens and at the same time endeavouring to stop the slaughter of the country's wildlife.
