Book The Man with the Iron Heart

Download or read book The Man with the Iron Heart written by Harry Turtledove and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 2009-07-28 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if V-E Day hadn’t ended World War II in Europe? What if, instead, the Allies had to face a potent, even fanatical, postwar Nazi resistance? Such a movement, based in the fabled Alpine Redoubt, was in fact a real threat, ultimately neutralized by Germany’s flagging resources and squabbling officials. But had SS Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, the notorious Man with the Iron Heart, not been assassinated in 1942, fate might have taken a different turn. In this imagined world, Nazi forces launch a guerrilla war, using the quick and dirty tactics of terrorism to overturn what seemed to be a decisive victory. Suddenly the Allies–especially the United States–are mired in a long, seemingly unwinnable conflict while battling an invisible, unrelenting enemy.

Book excerpt: An entertainer looks back on his life in this novel based on the rise and fall of a famous British comedy team From the vantage point of late middle age, Edward “Ted” King—one half of the dynamic duo Upward & King—discovers that nostalgia isn’t what it used to be. Ted met Arthur Upward in Britain’s National Service. They started out doing gigs at Soho cabarets, and in the mid-sixties, they took their act on the road. By the late seventies, they were the most beloved comedians on British television, watched by ten million viewers per week. This inventive novel, narrated by Ted on the eve of the release of a documentary about their famous partnership, begins with his boyhood in the farm fields of post-war Yarmouth. The son of a shopkeeper with few aspirations, Ted soon realizes he wants to tell jokes for a living. Then, one day in a hall at the sergeants’ mess, he sees Arthur perform the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.” He instantly senses the titanic influence the other man will have on his life. Ted plays the straight man to Arthur’s pratfalling comic, and they go on to captivate a nation. Until it all goes wrong. Crosscutting between the past and present, The Comedy Man is a poignant, funny “memoir” that reminds us how comedy is often derived from the most serious situations—and from the inexpressible longings of the human heart.

Book Restoration The Complete Series

Download or read book Restoration The Complete Series written by Bayla Dornon and published by Bayla Dornon. This book was released on 2021-11-20 with total page 2132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exciting full four-book series! Three unlikely friends, Chris, Mary, and George, come together as they flee the homes where they no longer fit, and begin a journey of self-discovery. At the Center for Restoration, they find freedom, acceptance and love, and begin the journey out of the patriarchal religious and societal constraints that caused them to flee their families and homes. The novels in the RESTORATION Series follow the struggles of three characters brought together in their escape from homes and lives that don't accept them — Chris, a young gay man; George a disinherited rich boy; and Mary, a victim of patriarchal domestic violence, strive to reach the freedom and happiness of a world free from religious hegemony. Filled with the passions and pathos of the young, the series examines in depth the inherent conflict between all religion and democracy in a pluralistic society. For the tortured victims of patriarchal religions in America, running away is only the beginning of an arduous journey away from mental and emotional slavery to ancient thinking, and towards self-discovery and the principles of the Enlightenment. Restoration, Book One. "The Only True Religion" and "Liberation" Fleeing his hyper-religious family when they threaten him with anti-gay conversion therapy, Chris Brenner finds both refuge and first love within the humanist Center for Restoration. But now, caught in the turmoil and social unrest of the Trump age, the San Francisco-based Center for Restoration faces a new threat, and Chris and his friends must fight for its very existence Restoration, Book Two. “Autrefois” Stunned by a tragic loss, young Chris Brenner and the friends he made at the Center for Restoration struggle to make sense of a world suddenly filled with pain. As Chris, George and Mary all cope in their own ways, Chris receives a precious gift from the past, which leads him on a voyage of discovery, deepening his knowledge of both the Center and the life of the man he loves. Restoration, Book Three: "The Masters" Chris Brenner has a hard choice to make: stay with his friends in San Francisco, surrounded by the memories of his dead boyfriend; or move to a city thousands of miles away? His friends, Mary and George have already relocated to Manhattan, for family reasons. But life in New York turns out to be quite different from that they expected— and Chris soon finds himself on a path he never imagined. Restoration, Book Four: "The Book Of The Dead" Since he fled from his religious fundamentalist family over a year ago, young Chris Brenner has completed his first year as an initiate at the Center for Restoration, and become a student of Theresa Smith, one of the founders of the organization. Now, alone in his former teacher’s apartment in Manhattan, delving into the deceased Master's past through her writings, Chris begins to find the purpose.

Book excerpt: In the shadowy back alleys and opulent homes of Paris, hard-nosed police inspector Paul Mazarelle of The Paris Directive sets out on the trail of a serial killer. A murdered man is discovered dangling inside the tunnels of a Paris canal--the only clue, the tarot card in his pockets: the Hanged Man. When an innocent suspect is railroaded into prison for the homicide, Mazarelle sets off on the hunt for the real killer. For the charming, hot-tempered, impulsive Frenchman--now back from the provinces and leading his own homicide unit out of Paris’s famed Quai des Orfevres--it’s an investigation that takes him far from the comforts of Beaujolais and bouillabaisse, and plunges him into an underworld of ruthless white supremacists looking for scapegoats in Paris’s growing immigrant community, corrupt cops eager to cover up a shady side business, and a conspiracy of secrets that threaten his own life. Meanwhile, Claire Girard, an irresistible and ambitious journalist at a popular tabloid, is wrapped up in the same story. On the trail of the Tarot Card killer, Mazarelle finds himself blindsided by their growing attraction. And when his team’s case collides with Girard's latest scoop, and the body count keeps rising, Mazarelle himself becomes a prime suspect who must clear his own name. Gerald Jay’s latest Mazarelle adventure is a riveting, fast-paced thriller about a classic French detective making his way through the dangerous streets of a very modern world.

Book THE WRONG SIDE OF EDEN

Download or read book THE WRONG SIDE OF EDEN written by Kelly Knox and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-07-29 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wrong Side of Eden-- I started with a well known story: Jack and The Beanstalk. But in this version we begin with Jack's encounter with the Peddler--and a few others; and after that encounter, Jack does not return home with a handful of magic beans--but is beaten, robbed, stripped naked and left for dead by the side of the road--by a vicious, chanting, singing and dancing (Greek) Chorus. He is awakened by a young girl "Jenny" who is innocently picking apples from trees that line the road--which we soon find out is the road to through the underworld...that will eventually lead to the Garden of Eden.... You can see it's not a 'typical play'--it operates on its own terms, complete with its own internal sense of logic, plot and character; although, I believe that in performance the audience will be able to follow the 'action' and the argument easily--because many elements are already so familiar to them.
