Book The School for Scandal and Other Plays

Download or read book The School for Scandal and Other Plays written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1998-05-07 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richly exploited comic situations, effervescent wit, and intricate plots combine to make Sheridan's work among the best of of all English comedy. The School for Scandal (1777) is his masterpiece, a brilliantly crafted comedy of contrasts in which brothers Joseph and Charles Surface contend for Maria, with hilariously differing intentions and results. Also a work of acute comic irony, The Rivals satirizes the romantic posturing of Lydia Languish while her disguised suitor Captain Absolute's resourceful contrivances advance an ever inventive and skilfully wrought plot. Included in this edition are the opera play The Duenna and the rarely printed musical play A Trip to Scarborough, adapted from Vanbrugh's The Relapse. Sheridan's last play, The Critic, is an exuberant parody of the modish tragic drama of the day. Lampooning Sir Fretful Plagiary's absurdly bombastic historical drama during its confused stages of production, its satire never fails to delight. The texts of the plays have been newly edited by the General Editor of the Oxford World's Classics English Drama series. A fine introduction and notes on Sheridan's playhouses and critical inheritance make this an invaluable edition for study and performance alike. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The chapters on Holy Week make it especially helpful during the Lent season and at Easter.

Book When Men Don t Cry and Other Plays for Teens

Download or read book When Men Don t Cry and Other Plays for Teens written by Samuel Williams and published by Partridge Singapore. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even the worst of us have a story to tell and a rationalization to share. The problem is that the "best of us" have already judged them unworthy. Many plays for student actors shy away from serious subjects. Even so, today's world is a serious place, and young people are facing some of the biggest challenges of their lives-gangs, drugs, bullying, broken homes, violence in the street. Seeking to address these topics, playwright Samuel Williams presents When Men Don't Cry and Other Plays for Teens, the last in his four-book series of plays. Powerful and relevant, these short dramatic works offer insight, understanding, and social commentary for today's youths, their teachers, and their families. Educational as well as entertaining, these plays shine a light on a troubled and often misunderstood generation. Acted out on stage or read aloud in a group setting, Williams' easy-to-read tales look past teens' tattoos, piercings, gang colors, and sagging pants to find their humanity. Ideal for schools and church groups, parents, and teens, When Men Don't Cry and Other Plays for Teens explores a litany of experiences and seeks to positively change the fundamental way that people see today's youth and family dynamics.

Book The Complete Aeschylus Volume II Persians and Other Plays

Download or read book The Complete Aeschylus Volume II Persians and Other Plays written by Aeschylus and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2009-02-17 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the conviction that only translators who write poetry themselves can properly re-create the celebrated and timeless tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, the Greek Tragedy in New Translations series offers new translations that go beyond the literal meaning of the Greek in order to evoke the poetry of the originals. The volume brings together four major works by one of the great classical dramatists: Prometheus Bound, translated by James Scully and C. John Herrington, a haunting depiction of the most famous of Olympian punishments; The Suppliants, translated by Peter Burian, an extraordinary drama of flight and rescue arising from women's resistance to marriage; Persians, translated by Janet Lembke and C. John Herington, a masterful telling of the Persian Wars from the view of the defeated; and Seven Against Thebes, translated by Anthony Hecht and Helen Bacon, a richly symbolic play about the feuding sons of Oedipus. These four tragedies were originally available as single volumes. This new volume retains the informative introductions and explanatory notes of the original editions and adds a single combined glossary and Greek line numbers.

Book Manhood in Early Modern England

Download or read book Manhood in Early Modern England written by Elizabeth A Foyster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to focus on the relationships which men formed with their wives in early modern England, making it an important contribution to a new understanding of English, social, family, and gender history. Dr Foyster redresses the balance of historical research which has largely concentrated on the public lives of prominent men. The book looks at youth and courtship before marriage, male fears of their wives' gossip and sexual betrayal, and male friendships before and after marriage. Highlighted throughout is the importance of sexual reputation. Based on both legal records and fictional sources, this is a fascinating insight into the personal lives of ordinary men and women in early modern England.

Book No Work and All Play

Download or read book No Work and All Play written by Roger Wagner and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of the book describe the many examples of the types of characters and crazy daily episodes that an average person who selects a career in casino hotel management will witness and are part of during a lifetime in such a career. The book is really not about me, but it is a lifetime chronicle of my career where every work day is fun and there is almost never any drudgery. The three most interesting characters in the book are none other than a tycoon named Donald Trump, a Casino Icon named Jack Binion and a baseball legend named Mickey Mantle. The book also describes many other very interesting real-life persons in my career from Mob-connected people to other well known casino operators of their day. Most of these characters are not famous celebrities but their stories are sometimes even more humorous than those of Trump or Mantle. The stories about these people are real and actually happened, although the actual dates may be incorrect in some cases and some of the intricate details may be embellished to improve the stories. None of the tales degrade any of the characters in my book, but I do tell humorous stories about all of them that demonstrate they all have to put their pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us. It is not a text book, but it can serve as a good primer for a person considering making gaming hospitality their career objective. The seven different sections of the book are written to show how a person entering a casino hospitality position might evolve from the lowest level in a casino organization to a very high level of management, and that it generally takes many years to accomplish. It also describes the different relationships that one develops in any type of business and I use real people to illustrate how they each fit into the different types of relationships.
