Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We ourselves are part of the problem, not ofits solution". This pronouncement, made by psychologist R. S. B. Wiener during the panel on social policy, provided a leading Dutch weekly with an excellent headline for an article on the 30th International Congress on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. With it Wiener touched one of the central, if not the central issue of the alcohol and drug problem. Why do we fix our attention so emphatically on 'the other people', on the consumers, abusers and addicts? Has not the time come that, also at scientific and learned congresses, we should start occupying ourselves with the shortcomings of society and with its legislation and policy as factors promoting this abuse and addiction? The question is so obvious that no one will dare give a neg ative answer. For this reason it is even more striking that it is given so little serious thought. We still try to change the consumer instead of the social structure. In his opening address, the Minister of Public Health and Environmental Hygiene of the Netherlands, Dr 1. B. J. Stuyt, gave some attention to this social structure. He pointed out that a social structure which is characterized by poverty and deprivation promotes the abuse of alcohol. Download or read book The Possible Profession The Analytic Process of Change written by Theodore J. Jacobs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Possible Profession: The Analytic Process of Change takes a fresh look at the many forms of unconscious communication that take place in the analytic situation. Bringing together two decades of the author’s previous writing as well as a considerable amount of new material, this book addresses a major contemporary issue in the field of psychoanalysis. Unconscious communication in the analytic situation takes many forms. This book explores a number of these pathways as the author has encountered them in clinical work. Including numerous clinical examples, chapters cover a variety of topics with a central focus on: the relationship between the inner worlds of patient and analyst the interplay between these intrapsychic forces how this interaction affects the analytic process and, more specifically, the therapeutic action of psychoanalysis. Written in a clear and concise way this book contributes to a new understanding of familiar material in a way that will be welcomed by teachers, students, and practitioners of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. It will also be of interest to dynamic therapists of all persuasions and academics in various fields interested in psychoanalytic thinking.

Download or read book The Druid of Harley Street written by E. Graham Howe and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2012-03-13 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 20th-century Britain, interest in psychoanalysis was high, leading to the formation of the famous Tavistock Clinic in 1920. E. Graham Howe was one of the clinic’s founders and the first to publish articles on psychotherapy. At the same time, he was attacked by the “scientific” psychiatry and psychoanalysis communities because he took concepts derived from spiritual practice and existential phenomenology and applied them to an understanding of psychotherapy. Howe’s writings included more than a dozen books and countless articles on a broad range of subjects from schizophrenia to Asian spiritual practices. Through these works he exerted a profound influence on intellectuals such as R. D. Laing, Alan Watts, and Henry Miller, to name a few. Howe also wrote in a simple and clear style, making his work accessible to the general public. The Druid of Harley Street samples the best of his essays, offering timely insights for followers of Jung, Roberto Assagioli, and Mark Epstein; students of somatic therapies; and spiritual and meditation practitioners. The book also offers a fascinating glimpse of a great mind, the notable people in his life, and the heady times in which he lived.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's where human and alien medicine meet: a massive hospital space station on the Galactic Rim, with 384 levels and a multispecies staff of thousands. In the course of practicing deep-space medicine, that staff has seen more than its share of challenges--from plagues caused by cafeteria food, to cafeteria food that resembles alien species. But now they are facing a disquieting new development: the terrifying Chief Psychologist, Dr. O'Mara, has been promoted to head of the hospital. Worse, he's been given the job on a temporary basis, for just as long as it takes to train his own replacement. After that, he is up for mandatory retirement. Nobody at Sector General can begin to imagine what they'll do without him--assuming they last long enough to find out. "This is White's finest performance, replete with wit, originality, medical expertise and sheer decency."--Publishers Weekly At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Download or read book Train Your Mind Change Your Brain written by Sharon Begley and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2008-11-12 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cutting-edge science and the ancient wisdom of Buddhism have come together to reveal that, contrary to popular belief, we have the power to literally change our brains by changing our minds. Recent pioneering experiments in neuroplasticity—the ability of the brain to change in response to experience—reveal that the brain is capable of altering its structure and function, and even of generating new neurons, a power we retain well into old age. The brain can adapt, heal, renew itself after trauma, compensate for disabilities, rewire itself to overcome dyslexia, and break cycles of depression and OCD. And as scientists are learning from studies performed on Buddhist monks, it is not only the outside world that can change the brain, so can the mind and, in particular, focused attention through the classic Buddhist practice of mindfulness. With her gift for making science accessible, meaningful, and compelling, science writer Sharon Begley illuminates a profound shift in our understanding of how the brain and the mind interact and takes us to the leading edge of a revolution in what it means to be human. Praise for Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain “There are two great things about this book. One is that it shows us how nothing about our brains is set in stone. The other is that it is written by Sharon Begley, one of the best science writers around. Begley is superb at framing the latest facts within the larger context of the field. This is a terrific book.”—Robert M. Sapolsky, author of Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers “Excellent . . . elegant and lucid prose . . . an open mind here will be rewarded.”—Discover “A strong dose of hope along with a strong does of science and Buddhist thought.”—The San Diego Union-Tribune

In How Minds Change (2022), science journalist David McRaney shows us how to change someone’s mind through empathy and helping them better understand their own thought process. He explores the science behind our beliefs, how they are formed, why we hold on to them tightly, and what makes us abandon them sometimes.
