Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mammals of Utah Three things have induced the author to enter upon the preparation of a work on the mammals of Utah: the unavailable nature of the scattered data on our wild ani mals; the constantly increasing public interest in nature generally; and the 'pleasurableness of the undertaking as a personal diversion. The aim has been to furnish the reader a dependable list of our mammals with accurate descriptions and brief notes on their habits and economic status. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report Upon the Collections of Mammals Made in Portions of Nevada, Utah, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona During the Years 1871-1872, 1873, and 1874 In certain localities in New Mexico and Arizona, it wages a terrible warfare upon wild turkeys, destroying hundreds of them, and depopulating their former breeding places to such an extent that in a few years the race will have become almost extinct in this region, if measures are not taken to prevent the wholesale slaughter. The crania and skins of two fine specimens were secured on the south ern mpe of the Triplet Mountains, near the Gila Valley, close to the San Carlos Indian reservation in Arizona. A large species of cat was frequently heard during the night howling near the camps in Eastern and Middle Utah, supposed to be the above; but no specimens were secured. Book The Resources and Attractions of Utah Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Resources and Attractions of Utah Classic Reprint written by Union Pacific Railroad Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resources and Attractions of Utah There can hardly be less than sheep in Utah. Pounds of wool were handled by Utah buyers in 1887. Of this about one-fourth is worked up by the Utah mills. Fleeces average 5 pounds for ewes, 7 pounds for wethers. Part of it ranges with the best California wools, as to quality, while part of it is inferior. Utah and Montana wools are considered better than the wools of the other Territories. Most of the Utah sheep came from New Mexico down to 1870. Since then ewes have been brought in from Cali fornia, generally fine-wooled Spanish Merinos, but little mixed; fine-wooled bucks from Ohio, and long-wooled from Canada. The same strain of blood in sheep does not produce quite so long a wool as in the east. It is so dry and dusty, the grease seems to absorb the alkali and mineral dust, which makes it harsher and more brittle. But since the large infusion of Merino blood, which has taken place in late years, there has been a marked improve ment in the quality of Utah wool, in respect of length, softness and firmness of fibre. It realizes to the grower, here, crude, about fifteen to twenty cents a pound, according to the range of prices abroad. The strain of blood in cattle, horses, and sheep has been greatly improved in recent years, but it is still the point requiring attention. In Vermont the breeder with the best ram has the precedence. Inferior wool comes from shiftless, careless breed ing. An authority says, aim for the best mutton if you would get the best wool.' This is the system in England, the great mutton-producing and combing-wool-producing country of the world. The characteristic qualities of the English combing wools have been developed upon originally short wooled animals simply through a constant effort to improve their carcasses for the mutton market. From this it seems that the interests of the grower, the consumer of meat, and the manufacturer of wool, are identical, and they all depend upon the quality of the stock ram of the flock. Book NOTES ON THE MAMMALS OF THE LA

Download or read book NOTES ON THE MAMMALS OF THE LA written by Barton Warren Evermann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Mammals of the Lake Maxinkuckee Region The northward movement of the Opossum seems to have been general over the state. They are occasionally taken in Marshall and adjoining counties. They are frequently seen at Fort Wayne, Indiana, a few being captured every winter. Mr. J. J. Hildebrandt, of Logansport, reported that some one had brought him about October 1, 1904, an old Opossum and 12 young, the latter about two-thirds as large as rats. The first night she killed 9 of them. He kept the other three and the mother for about 3 weeks, when he took them to the woods and turned them loose. Devouring its young in captivity seems to be a common habit of the Opossum, and almost everyone who has tried to keep them together has had the young destroyed by the mother. The Opossum is usually caught in this region for its fur. The prices now obtained by the trappers are 15 to 2 5 cents. The pelts are becoming more valuable every year, the prices brought in the London market in 1910 for prime skins ranging from 45 cents to $1. The food of the Opossum is chie y insects, though they are also fond of pawpaws. They also feed to some extent upon the mussels which they find in the lake. They are an innocent, harmless animal and should be protected. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Tenderfoot Days in Territorial Utah Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tenderfoot Days in Territorial Utah Classic Reprint written by George Robert Bird and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tenderfoot Days in Territorial Utah This book is neither a History nor a Topography of the Territory of Utah in the early seventies of the last century. The volume is due to the experiences of an outsider who tried to be impartial in his views and sympathies. The personal note, of course, rings in this record of those past days. No onslaught is made on the "wild and woolly" west, nor on the eccentric religion of the majority of the people. Through much peril and privation, the wild wastes of the Territory had been occupied by a people whose hard toil had redeemed the desert. The picture of life presented in these pages is in accord with the facts, the only changes made are in the names of some of the characters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Mammals and Birds of Burma Blyth was a staunch adherent of Darwin's views, and an Opportunity of thus declaring himself offered at our November meeting in 1860, when Mr. H. Blanford read his paper on the well-known Work of Dr. Broun on the laws of development of organized beings. The value attached by Darwin to Blyth's observations is shown by the frequent reference made to them, more especially in his Animals and Plants under Domestication.' His first cita tion of Blyth in the latter work describes him as an excellent authority, and the many quotations that follow in these interesting volumes show how carefully he read and noted all that fell from Blyth, even in his contributions to sporting journals. Book Revision of the North American Ground Squirrels

Download or read book Revision of the North American Ground Squirrels written by Arthur H. Howell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revision of the North American Ground Squirrels: With a Classification of the North American Sciuridae Ground squirrel burrows are often a serious menace to the safety of irrigation systems. Birdseye (1912, p. 13) tells of a serious washout caused by irrigation water escaping through a Columbian ground squirrel's burrow located in an orchard on the bench above. Lantz (1918, p 14) cites the destruction of 6 acres of alfalfa caused by the burrowing of a California ground squirrel into an irrigation embankment. An additional count against certain of the ground squirrels is based on the part they play in the dissemination of diseases often fatal to man, as is the case with the Columbian ground squirrel in the spread of spotted fever, he California, Oregon, Uinta, Colum bian, and Richardson's ground squirrels in the spread of bubonic plague, and the California ground squirrel and the Utah rock squirrel in the spread of tularemia.
