The multidisciplinary approach in evaluating the history of Amazonia has resulted in a comprehensive volume that provides novel insights into the evolution of this region.

Book excerpt: Mammal faunas from northern French Guiana (in northeastern Amazonia) and the Yavarí-Ucayali interfluve (in southwestern Amazonia) are the first Amazonian mammal faunas to be comprehensively described in terms of taxonomic composition and community structure. Bats are the most speciose group in each fauna, followed in order of decreasing species richness by rodents, didelphimorphians, carnivorans, xenarthrans or primates, and ungulates. A total of 180 species are known from northern French Guiana and 199 species from the Yavarí-Ucayali interfluve, but an additional 25 species are possibly missing (“pseudoabsent”) from the Yavarí-Ucayali interfluvial inventory; therefore, the increment by which species richness in northeast- ern Peru exceeds that of northern French Guiana is on the order of 10–25%. Complementarity (dissimilarity) between these faunas is high (79%–89%) for opossums, primates, and rodents, but complementarity is substantially lower for other groups (especially bats, carnivorans, and ungulates), suggesting taxonomic differences in geographic filtering. Most species in both faunas are nocturnal, as might be expected from the abundance of bats, but even among nonflying mammals nocturnal species outnumber diurnal species by about 2:1. Approximately equal numbers of nonflying species in both faunas are arboreal or terrestrial, whereas much smaller numbers are scansorial or semiaquatic; with one possible exception, none is fossorial. Despite such behavioral similarities, these faunas differ in trophic composition and guild membership: substantially more primary consumers are present in the Yavarí-Ucayali interfluve than in northern French Guiana, whereas numbers of secondary consumers and omnivores are similar. Higher primary productivity in western Amazonia, a geomorphologically dynamic landscape with fertile soils and phenologically diverse habitats, could explain faunal differences in both species richness and trophic structure.

The book is written for academics, scientists and scholars engaged in paleontology, zoology and evolutionary biology, but may also appeal to a larger audience of general readers interested in mammalian evolution. The book begins with an introduction, describing the tools necessary to interpret the evolutionary history of South American mammals in geological terms and some of the early people who helped found South American mammalian paleontology. Chapter 2 describes the Mesozoic first mammals of Gondwana and what we are learning about them, dominant before the K/T extinction event. Then chapters 3 through 8 cover the Cenozoic, or "Age of Mammals", highlighting the major mammalian groups of South America that replaced the earlier mammals of Gondwana. These groups include the marsupials, native ungulates, the xenarthrans (armadillos, anteaters, sloths), the caviomorphs (rodents), and the platyrrhine monkeys. Chapters 9 and 10 address the Antarctic La Meseta fossils and the Colombian La Venta fossil faunal assemblages. Chapter 11 discusses the neotropical mammals that invaded the Caribbean Islands, and illustrates the influence South America has had on adjacent faunas. Chapter 12 describes the origin of the Amazon River and the role it has played in the evolution of the mammals and other flora and fauna. Chapter 13 tells the story of the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI), and chapter 14 follows this up with a discussion of the Pleistocene mammal communities and their eventual extinction. Chapter 15 concludes the text by discussing the modern mammals of South America, and how despite the extensive Pleistocene extinctions there is still a lot of mammalian diversity in South America.

Book excerpt: One of the most diverse mammal assemblage inhabits the Amazonian rainforest, not found anywhere around the World, therefore this species richness is still poorly understood. Many studies including inventories or monitoring are important for the comprehension of the ecology of many species and still provide basic data for conservation actions. During two decades of sampling in the Saracu00e1-Taquera National Forest, we recorded at least 72 species of small - nonvolant, medium, and large mammals, considering 30 families in 10 orders. We also found 29 endemic species to the Amazon forest, some of them were classified as endangered. In summary, we found one of the most mammal species richness recorded in the Amazonian basin, probably greater than that already found in other sites elsewhere, indicating high levels of diversity in a biogeographic narrow scale. Our findings indicate the importance of this national forest for the maintenance of the mammalian fauna and highlight how important is the sustainable use of the forest, especially when we have to conciliate the rational exploitation and the protection of the biodiversity.
