Book Mama s Diamonds

Download or read book Mama s Diamonds written by Emcie Day and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-12-20 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ms. Day was born and raised in a small town in upstate New York during the late 30's through the early 50's. Being part of a family of nine children and an alcoholic father brought on many hardships, yet there were many delightful moments as well. "Mama's Diamonds" is a collection of these tales. The story tells of the extent that the mother and children of this poor Irish family had to go through and the things they had to endure in order to survive. Their wily nature helped. Mama O'Brien loved all her children and would have been shocked to know what devious means they used and the risks they took in order to obtain some of the necessities of life. Perhaps she knew, but just couldn't bear to acknowledge that this was for the most part, required in order to supplement the meager substance provided by their father. One might ask about her precious diamonds and their worth, and why couldn't they be used to help support the family; but they did ... just not in a materialistic sense.

  • Author : Luanne Rice
  • Publisher : Bantam
  • Release : 2001-01-02
  • ISBN : 0553581023
  • Pages : 500 pages

Download or read book Follow the Stars Home written by Luanne Rice and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2001-01-02 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed novelist Luanne Rice "touches the deepest, most tender corners of the heart" (Tami Hoag, author of A Thin Dark Line). Her stories remind us how precious and fragile life can be—and that we must risk our hearts every day to know happiness. Follow the Stars Home is just such a novel: a story of poignancy and heartbreak, grace and courage. Being a good mother is never simple: each day brings new choices and challenges. For Dianne Robbins, being a devoted single mother has resulted in her greatest joy and her darkest hours. Weeks before her daughter was born, she and her husband, Tim McIntosh, received the news every parent fears. Tim had not reckoned on their child being anything less than perfect, and abruptly fled to a solitary existence on the sea, leaving Dianne with a newborn—almost alone. It was Tim's brother, Alan, the town pediatrician, who stood by Dianne and her exceptional daughter. Throughout years of waiting, watching, and caring, Alan hid his love for his brother's wife. But one of the many hard choices Dianne has made is to close her heart toward any man—especially one named McIntosh. It will take a very special twelve-year-old to remind them all that love comes in many forms and can be received with as much grace as it is given. As lyrical and moving as the poetry of nature, Follow the Stars Home is a miracle of storytelling that will take your breath away. If words alone can dare us to confront our fears and to choose joy over sorrow, then Luanne Rice's magnificent novel is a benediction and a call to celebrate our lives.

She goes to live with relatives who discriminate against her because she is mixed race. Diamond is rescued from abusive family members through adoption. While growing up, she is kept in the dark about her white father. After graduating from college she meets and marries an older abusive man. Diamond gets arrested for assaulting her husband; and comes face to face with the man she thought shed never meet. Diamonds life story comes to a wonderful ending when her white and black relatives unite in love, as one big happy blended family. Book Review BlueInk Review of Diamonds Fate (paperback 978-1-4568-8877-0) revised by Author Angie Singleton, 09/15/2011 This intriguing novel captures the tumultuous life of Diamond Pearl Hope, a biracial news reporter living in Florida. Diamond was born to a white father and African-American mother. Due to the death of her mother, Diamond is forced to go live in a household with family members who frequently torment her, because of her light skin and interracial heritage. Diamond gets adopted by a white couple and experiences life on the other side of the color line, after the horrific death of her grandmother. When Diamond graduates from college, she meets and marries a man twice her age. She learns, firsthand, the intricacies of the criminal justice system, after getting arrested for assaulting her husband, who attacks her in a drunken rage. Struggling to put her life back together, Diamond finds strength in her Christian faith, caring friends and a loving family, including her newly discovered biological father, whom she reconciles with. In the end, Diamond not only wins an award for investigative reporting of domestic violence, she makes peace with those family members whod hurt her in the past; and her black and white relatives unite in a joyful celebration. Written in a distinctive voice Diamonds Fate conjures up past and current history making events such as the O.J. Simpson trial with telling details. References are made to popular music, movies and television shows that influenced society for generations. While the book contains idiosyncrasies or elements not typically found in most novels, such as: the authors personal photo album included in the back of the book and a frequency of italicized words and paragraphs, the story is compelling enough to make for an exciting, enjoyable and enlightening read. Readers interested in Christian and inspirational stories, as well as those curious about the unique challenges facing biracial children, will appreciate this tale of struggle and triumph. Novel is also available in hardcopy and ebook.

Download or read book Sassy Mamas and Other Plays written by Celeste Bedford Walker and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celeste Bedford Walker, one of the most accomplished contemporary playwrights in Texas, crafts dramas from history and everyday life that illuminate the African American experience in all its variety, tragedy, pathos, and hilarity. Collected here are five of her most acclaimed plays: Sassy Mamas, Greenwood: An American Dream Destroyed, Reunion in Bartersville, Distant Voices, and Camp Logan. The topics treated by Walker are timelier than ever. Sassy Mamas follows “three women of substance and of a certain age who flip the script on gender stereotypes and become involved with younger men.” Greenwood: An American Dream Destroyed tells the powerful story of the horrific attack on the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, once known as the “Black Wall Street.” In Reunion in Bartersville, described by Walker as “a comedy-mystery in two acts,” the 50-year class reunion of Bartersville High School turns to hilarious suspense when an unexpected guest arrives. Recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Distant Voices “resurrects” persons buried in College Memorial Park, the second-oldest African American cemetery in Houston, to celebrate the wisdom of those gone before. Camp Logan is based on real-life events in Houston in 1917, when members of the highly decorated 24th Infantry Regiment were subjected to brutal Jim Crow treatment, resulting in a riot that left dozens dead and the execution of seventeen African American soldiers for mutiny. Readers and audiences should be prepared to laugh out loud, to be challenged, to be disturbed, and above all, to be enlightened by this poignant collection of plays.

Book excerpt: Year of Night tells the story of a young Russian émigré and her struggle to free herself from a net of conflicting loyalties, passions and betrayal amid the colour and excitement of 1920s Paris. In the chaos of Revolutionary Russia, 18-year-old Nadia Serova is forced to flee with false papers provided by her mysterious ‘Uncle Igor’, a charismatic photographer. Igor confesses that he is a key member of ‘The Trust’ – a secret anti-Bolshevik organisation run from the heart of the Kremlin, known only as ‘Moscow’. Igor recruits her as his partner and they swear a blood oath of allegiance. In Paris, they join a flood of White Russian émigrés: officers, philosophers, poets, bohemians and former aristocrats who haunt Montparnasse and Billancourt, scraping a living, quarrelling and living in a hotbed of gossip and conspiracies as they plot the inevitable Bolshevik collapse, and their return. Nadia befriends Arensky, a former White general, secretly creating an anti-Bolshevik force; at the same time, she meets Alyosha, who dreams of uniting both Reds and Whites. Her relationship with Igor becomes more intense; she becomes his muse and then his mistress, although he flaunts his relationship with his former lover. As the ‘Moscow’ organisation increase pressure for action, and violence stalks the streets of Paris, Nadia realises she might be at the centre of a web not of her making. For who is Igor really? And what are his real intentions? Year of Night is a gripping work of historical romantic fiction which explores rarely-fictionalised parts of history. It will appeal to female readers interested in social history and Russian culture. Kate has been inspired by a number of authors, including Chekhov, Evelyn Waugh, Alice Munro and Willa Cather. Year of Night is comparable to Gillian Slovo’s The Ice Palace, William Boyd’s Restless, Helen Dunmore’s The Betrayal and Anna Funder’s All That I Am.
