Book The Psychology of Pessimism

Download or read book The Psychology of Pessimism written by Daniel X. Choi and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimism and pessimism are complementary, but opposing, dispositions. In general, optimists consistently expect good outcomes and pessimists consistently expect bad outcomes. These variations in human behaviour have profound mental and physical implications. The aim of the present work is to provide an overview of the psychology of pessimism. It is composed of four sections - I: How are optimism and pessimism measured?, II: What is the relationship between optimism and pessimism?, III: What is the relationship between optimism-pessimism and health?, and IV: What are the biology and chemistry of optimism-pessimism? For various reasons, rigorous analysis of pessimism has been difficult. Nonetheless, recent advances, including the development of numerous psychological batteries, have allowed for structured, scientific investigation. Indeed, several studies have examined the medical implications and biological and chemical bases of pessimism. Nonetheless, the psychology of pessimism is imperfect and further study is needed.

Download or read book Malignant Growth written by Alan I Marcus and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this accessible history of science and medicine, Marcus exposes the complex story of the efforts made from 1875 through 1915 to first conquer and, failing that, to control cancer--a dual approach that remains in force to this day. He reveals the messiness of real-time scientific research, tracing the repeated lurches of promise, discoveries of hope, and the inevitable despair that always followed. Other barriers existed to the research, such as inconsistency in test standards and inter-laboratory competition and mistrust. Researchers approached cancer from such disparate specialties as clinical medicine, zoology, botany, chemistry, nutrition, bacteriology, pathology, and microbiology. Although they came from diverse fields, each steadfastly maintained that cancer operated in an analogous fashion to other bacteriological diseases.

Book Immunology of Malignant Diseases

Download or read book Immunology of Malignant Diseases written by V.S. Byers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 5 years, clinical immunology, as a whole, has advanced more rapidly than over the past 20 years. Many of these advances have been que to monoclonal antibody technology with its ability to identify antigens on tumour cells with a precision never before available. Monoclonal antibodies have the ability to identify subsets of human T-Iymphocytes and aid in diagnosis of both immunodeficiency disorders such as AIDS, or autoimmune diseases, and they can be adapted as drug targeting agents. Additionally, however, major advances have been made in identifying immunomodulating agents, and the last year has seen two such agents, IL-2 and OKT3, made available commercially for such intervention. Furthermore, another immuno modulating technique, bone marrow transplantation, ha~ now been established as a curative modality in leukaemia treatment. A central issue in tumour immunology is whether human tumours express antigens which can be termed tumour-specific. This has important implications for both tumour immunity as well as drug targeting. This issue is considered in detail by R. A. Robins in the introductory chapter in which the expression of antigens in human tumours is compared with that in experimentally induced animal tumours. This controversial issue is also considered in later chapters by Bast in breast carcinoma, Riimke and de Vries in melanoma, V{mky in lung cancer, Armitage in colorectal cancer, and Paulie and Perlmann in bladder carcinoma.

Hall There appears to be a rise in spirituality in the USA. All you have to do is go to your nearest book store or flip through magazines to document the rapidly rising interest in spirituality. But what is spirituality? For most people, spirituality or faith believes in something larger than yourself. And faith isn’t restricted to those who belong to an organized or traditional faith. What if you are not part of an organized or tradition? That doesn’t mean that you are not spiritual or you don’t believe in God. People often use the word “spirituality” interchangeably with religion, but the terms are not the same. Religion has more to do with following the specific practices and dictates of an institution. Spirituality is more personal and encompasses your relationship with others and your creator. In this guide we will discover the areas of life that not only enhance your spirituality, but also enhance the quality of your life. And guide you on the journey of experiencing a deeper level of faith than the ritualistic and traditional ways of religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transplantation of syngeneic (donor is a monozygous twin) or allogeneic (donor is an HLA-identical sibling) marrow provides the opportunity for aggressive antileukemic therapy without regard to marrow toxicity. Until 1975, marrow transplantation was carried out only after failure of all other therapy. Consequently, most patients were in advanced relapse. Six of 16 recipients of syngeneic marrow and 13 of 100 recipients of allogeneic marrow are still in remission after 5. 5-10 years [3, 7]. An actuarial survival curve of the first 100 patients grafted in Seattle after conditioning with cyclophos phamide (60 mg/kg on each of 2 successive days) and total body irradiation (1,000 rad) showed three periods of interest: (1) The first 4 months showed a rapid loss of patients associated with advanced illness, graft-versus-host disease, infections (in particular interstitial pneumonias), and recurrent leukemia; (2) from 4 months to 2 years, the curve showed a much slower rate of decline attributable primarily to recurrent leukemia; and (3) from 2-10 years, the curve was almost flat with a negligible loss of patients and no recurrent leukemia. This flat portion of the curve corresponded to 13% of the patients and indicates a strong probability that the majority of these survivors are cured of their disease [8]. Attempts at reducing the incidence of leukemic relapse after transplantation were made by a number of marrow transplant groups by added chemotherapy.
