Book Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health

Download or read book Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-07-02 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's obvious why only men develop prostate cancer and why only women get ovarian cancer. But it is not obvious why women are more likely to recover language ability after a stroke than men or why women are more apt to develop autoimmune diseases such as lupus. Sex differences in health throughout the lifespan have been documented. Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health begins to snap the pieces of the puzzle into place so that this knowledge can be used to improve health for both sexes. From behavior and cognition to metabolism and response to chemicals and infectious organisms, this book explores the health impact of sex (being male or female, according to reproductive organs and chromosomes) and gender (one's sense of self as male or female in society). Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health discusses basic biochemical differences in the cells of males and females and health variability between the sexes from conception throughout life. The book identifies key research needs and opportunities and addresses barriers to research. Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health will be important to health policy makers, basic, applied, and clinical researchers, educators, providers, and journalists-while being very accessible to interested lay readers.

Book Homosexual Behavior Among Males

Download or read book Homosexual Behavior Among Males written by Wainwright Churchill and published by New York : Hawthorn Books. This book was released on 1967 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A subject beset by misunderstanding, prejudice, repression, stereotyping, and dishonesty--male homosexual behavior is studied thoroughly and objectively for the first time in this book by an eminent psychotherapist. On the basis of the Kinsey report and other behavioral studies, Dr. Churchill denies that 'the homosexual' can be defined, since homosexual behavior occurs to some extent in such a wide variety of persons. Most psychiatric studies, according to Dr. Churchill, deal in stereotypes, since they are concerned only with mentally disturbed individuals. The only valid approach to the subject is to distinguish degrees of homosexual orientation on the basis of frequency and preference of homosexual activity. Dr. Churchill explores the sexual behavior of many cultures--Greek and Roman, ancient tribal and modern primitive, northern and southern European and American--and of many nonhuman species. He finds most of the problems of homosexual behavior today rooted in the general sex-negativeness of our culture. In this connection Dr. Churchill probes such religious ideas as original sin, circumcision, asceticism, and the sanctity of the family; and such legal dilemmas as entrapment, blackmail, and the denial of the right to assemble. Grounded in scientific principles, Homosexual Behavior among Males is a cogent argument for a positive, humanistic approach to sex which accepts the fact that no single pattern of sexual behavior can ever become the only one for all men."--

Book Perspectives in Male Psychology

Download or read book Perspectives in Male Psychology written by and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PERSPECTIVES IN MALE PSYCHOLOGY Discover a balanced perspective on men’s psychology in this accessible new resource Male psychology is a new field within the discipline of psychology, which focuses on men and boys. Male psychology moves us towards a more scientific and balanced understanding of the psychology of men and of boys, drawing on a range of perspectives, and away from an overreliance on social constructionism and preoccupations with notions such as patriarchy and privilege, too often seen in the narrative about men. In Perspectives in Male Psychology: An Introduction, two of the most prominent authors in this new field, Louise Liddon and John Barry, introduce and deliver an insightful exploration of some of today’s most hotly contested issues regarding men and masculinity. This book puts forward a balanced perspective that has been missing from academic and media narratives around topics such as child development, education, sport and exercise, the workplace, crime, the military, health and wellbeing, mental health, therapy, masculinity, and sex differences, and considers the role that evolution, biology, and culture play in shaping male behavior. This book will also help readers to better understand some key issues such as: Why there are controversies around sex differences research How bias in research has led to a distorted view of the psychology of men and boys The ways in which the mental health and other needs of men and boys are routinely overlooked In turn this helps us ask some important questions such as: If there are more similarities than differences between men and women, does that mean the differences are unimportant? How can we un-distort our understanding of men and masculinity? What are the best ways of identifying and meeting the psychological needs of men and boys? Readers, whether students or lecturers, will also benefit from the inclusion of our companion Wiley website containing additional resources to support the development of knowledge and understanding of male psychology. Perfect for undergraduate and graduate students in psychology, medicine, and sociology, as well as established professionals in these and related fields, Perspectives in Male Psychology: An Introduction will also earn a place in the libraries of anyone interested in the psychology of sex and gender differences in various aspects of mental health and human behaviour.

Book Bad Men

    Book Details:
  • Author : David M. Buss
  • Publisher : Hachette UK
  • Release : 2021-07-01
  • ISBN : 1472146328
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Bad Men written by David M. Buss and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual conflict permeates ancient religions, from injunctions about thy neighbor's wife to the sexual obligations of marriage. It is etched in written laws that dictate who can and cannot have sex with whom. Its manifestations shape our sexual morality, evoking approving accolades or contemptuous condemnation. It produces sexual double standards that flourish even in the most sexually egalitarian cultures on earth. And although every person alive struggles with sexual conflict, most of us see only the tip of the iceberg: dating deception, a politician's unsavory grab, the slow crumbling of a once-happy marriage, a romantic breakup that turns nasty. Bad Men shows that this "battle of the sexes" is deeper and far more pervasive than anyone has recognized, revealing the hidden roots of sexual conflict -- roots that originated over deep evolutionary time -- which characterise our sexual psychology. Providing novel insights into our minds and behaviours, Bad Men presents a unifying new theory of sexual conflict and offers practical advice for men and women seeking to avoid it.

This handbook provides a comprehensive and up-to-date resource to understand the intersectionality of gender differences, to dispel myths, and to examine gender-relevant as well as culturally relevant implications and appropriate interventions. Featuring a truly international mix of contributors, and incorporating cross-cultural research and comparative perspectives, this handbook will inform mainstream psychology of the international literature on the psychology of women and gender.
