Book MALAYSIA Collection of Essays

Download or read book MALAYSIA Collection of Essays written by Firend Al. Rasch and published by IJBMR. This book was released on with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impressed with the economic performance of Malaysia, triggered an interest in examining how Malaysia (then under PM Mahathir) managed to pull out of the financial crisis of 1997, that gripped much of South East Asia. Years later, Malaysia managed to pull itself out of the financial crisis, and to be a rising Asian tiger. This early interest has turned into love and affection to a country with unique history, resources, and marvelous people. The deeper my research of Malaysia, the more my frustration grew with the lack of ability of a nation to move into a unique socio-economic position. That is, to equalize with Singapore, or compete at the global level with Korea. I chose 2020 to publish this body of work, because I was waiting to confirm my hypothesis that Malaysia will not manage to achieve Wawasan 2020 (vision 2020), which is to be amongst 1st world nations. Failing to achieve vision 2020 is no coincidence. Malaysia is stuck in the middle between cheap production countries such as Vietnam and Korea, and services-based economies such as Singapore. The first essay that follows the introduction is called The Phenomenon of Economic Inertia. The premise for this research paper is that Malaysia is suffering from a phenomenon of inertia, economically however, that it is incapable of pulling itself out of its current position like many developing nations) for number of reasons. With corruption being deeply rooted in the varying layers of society, and a leadership that failed to control corruption (as in the case of Singapore) and move the country into globally competitive position. This is what is meant by a “Phenomenon of Inertia” that is a conscious self-inflicted condition. The human factor in the hypothesis of “Phenomenon of Inertia” does comprise of society at large; people, leadership, and institutions. Managerial practices in Malaysia are still hierarchical and power based. Such hierarchy and power bases, are an evident participant in the inner-play of socio-economics of the Malaysian nation. The Malaysian current state of affairs (as of 2020) is self-inflicted condition. With the Malaysia education system being deeply flawed. This naturally led into the state of Malaysian lack of industrial competitiveness, which is not breaking through its global competitors. With so much to offer, Malaysia still has a great chance to make the leap forward to achieve its Wawasan to be realized in a later date, as long as it gets there. This will entirely depend on the will of the Malaysian people collectively.

Book The Heritage of Traditional Malay Literature

Download or read book The Heritage of Traditional Malay Literature written by V.I. Braginsky and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional literature, or 'the deed of the reed pen' as it was called by its creators, is not only the most valuable part of the cultural heritage of the Malay people, but also a shared legacy of Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei. Malay culture during its heyday saw the entire Universe as a piece of literature written by the Creator with the Sublime Pen on the Guarded Tablet. Literature was not just the creation of a scribe, but a scribe himself, imprinting words on the 'sheet of memory' and thus shaping human personality. This book, the first comprehensive survey of traditional Malay literature in English since 1939, embraces more than a millennium of Malay letters from the vague data of the seventh century up to the early beginnings of the modern literatures in the late nineteenth century. The long path trodden by traditional Malay literature is viewed in historical and theoretical perspectives as a development of integral system, caused by cultural and religious changes, primarily by gradual Islamization. This changing system considered in the entirety of its genres and works, is seen both externally and internally: from the point of view of modern scholarship and through the examination of indigenous concepts of literary creativity, poetics and aesthetics. The book not only repesents an original study based on a specific historico-theoretical approach, but it is also a complete reference-work and an indispensable manual for students.

Located just west of the Atlas Mountains, the city has been inhabited by Berber farmers for centuries. Book The End of Umno Essays on Malaysia s Former Dominant Party

Download or read book The End of Umno Essays on Malaysia s Former Dominant Party written by Bridget Welsh and published by Strategic Information and Research Development Centre. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the future of Malaysia’s former dominant party, the United Malays National Organisation or UMNO? With the loss of government in the May 2018 General Election (GE14) after 61 years in government, the party faces a different, more uncertain future. It is grappling with its new role in the national political opposition and continued questions about the leadership of former prime minister Najib Tun Razak. This collection is an expanded edition of the original 2016, The End of UMNO? It includes the original five essays (including the foreword by current Foreign Minister in the Pakatan Harapan government and former UMNO Supreme Council member Saifuddin Abdullah), as well as new post-GE14 epilogue essays by each of the contributors – John Funston, Clive Kessler, James Chin and Bridget Welsh, all prominent and established scholars studying Malaysian politics. It also includes a new foreword by veteran UMNO leader, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who contested for the party presidency in the June 2018 party elections. The contributors in this collection study developments in Malaysia’s dominant party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and discuss the question of whether UMNO is in fact at an end. The answers to its future lie in part with a better understanding of its past and present. The authors draw attention to issues of party identity, leadership, membership, governance, institutional change, party financing, internal divisions and its relations with different communities and the public at large. The new and expanded edition draws attention to the factors that contributed to UMNO’s loss of government in GE14 and potential steps ahead. Not only does this book fill an important gap in the scholarly research on UMNO, this book offers different perspectives on the party’s contemporary challenges. This book aims to contribute to understanding, broaden public debate and stimulate further research on arguably one of Malaysia’s most important political institutions.

Book Making Heritage in Malaysia

Download or read book Making Heritage in Malaysia written by Sharmani Patricia Gabriel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a scholarly perspective on heritage as a discourse, concept and lived experience in Malaysia. It argues that heritage is not a received narrative but a construct in the making. Starting with alternative ways of “museumising” heritage, the book then addresses a broad range of issues involving multicultural and folklore heritage, the small town, nostalgia and the environment, and transnationalism and cosmopolitanism. In so doing it delivers an intervention in received ways of talking about and “doing” heritage in academic as well as state and public discourse in Malaysia, which are largely dominated by perspectives that do not sufficiently engage with the cultural complexities and sociopolitical implications of heritage. The book also critically explores the politics and dynamics of heritage production in Malaysia to contest “Malaysian heritage” as a stable narrative, exploring both its cogency and contingency, and builds on a deep engagement with a non-western society in the service of “provincialising” critical heritage studies, with the broader goal of contributing to Malaysian studies.

Book 50 Years of Malaysia Federalism Revisited

Has Malaysian federalism been a successful example of this form of government in Asia, or has the bargain been undermined in ways contrary to the original deal in the Malaysia Agreement of 1963? Book Fiction and Faction in the Malay World

Download or read book Fiction and Faction in the Malay World written by Mohamad Rashidi Pakri and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a variety of essays and perspectives on some of the foreigners and traders who came to the Malay World and wrote fiction and “faction” (writing that portrays real people or events in a dramatised manner) during their sojourn – regardless of whether they continued to stay in the region, returned to their home country, or migrated to another country. The essays tend to cross generic and disciplinary boundaries as the contributors of this book are drawn from various fields within the arts and humanities, including history, geography, language and literature and translation. All of them, however, deal with colonial texts, the Malay World, or primarily cover the period from the 18th to the 20th century. Including readings of fiction, diaries, vignettes, letters written by traders or colonial officers, the uniqueness of this book lies in the personal, private and/or informal nature of the various documents studied. The encounters of these ‘outsiders’ with the ‘natives’ not only offer fascinating historical insights into the Malay World, but, to a significant degree, vividly express the views and personalities of the writers themselves, as mediated through their assigned commercial and colonial roles.
