Despite a long-running financial scandal dogging the ruling coalition, pollsters and commentators predicted a solid BN victory or, at least, a narrow parliamentary majority. Karya yang menerima pengaruh daripada tradisi politik kenegaraan Islam tersebut mengandungi pelbagai panduan bertulis tentang pembentukan keperibadian raja dan pembesar dan berperanan sebagai cermin adab kepimpinan mapan kepada mereka dalam melaksanakan pemerintahan negara. Hakikatnya hampir semua karya yang memerikan sejarah politik kesultanan Melayu lahir pada zaman penjajahan Barat di Alam Melayu dan hal ini menimbulkan persoalan tentang tujuan tersurat dan tersirat penulisan karya-karya tersebut sebagai benteng ketahanan politik kenegaraan Melayu. Karya-karya besar yang terhasil pada satu-satu zaman mengandungi kepelbagaian maklumat tentang konsep negara, tokoh pemimpin, suara rakyat dan pengajaran moral yang berhubungan dengan politik yang berlaku pada masa lalu. Karya-karya ini sewajarnya terus menjadi sumber rujukan sehingga ke hari ini, sama ada daripada sudut pendekatan sejarah persuratan yang diakronik atau sinkronik. Gagasan ini memerlukan penelitian filologi yang berterusan terhadap karya Melayu yang masih wujud dalam bentuk manuskrip Jawi yang berada di dalam dan di luar negara. Kini, semua hasil persuratan yang lahir pada abad ke-15 sehingga awal abad ke-20 yang memperlihatkan kekuatan isi dan kehalusan seni kepengarangan Melayu telah disanjung oleh masyarakat sebagai Karya Agung Melayu, sekali gus meninggikan teras politik kenegaraan Melayu dalam menghadapi cabaran kehidupan pada abad ke-21 ini.

Book excerpt: This study was carried out in Johor and Kedah through a combination of focus groups, formal and informal interviews and long-term ethnographic participant observation. Johor was selected for this study because it is the birthplace and long-time bastion of UMNO while Kedah was of interest because of the Mahathir family legacy in the state. The study shows that the rural vote is not homogeneous; views and perceptions that could lead to electoral action differs between regions, ages and genders. Daily survival and rising costs of living are the key common issues that were raised across all regions. The importance of Malay rights and the priority of Islam are also important to the rural voter. Another common problem mentioned is that of the middleman who prevents allocated funds or financial assistance from reaching the average rural resident. Malay cultural norms, traditional obligations of loyalty and patronage politics are major factors that affect the decisions of older rural voters. Younger voters might be open to the idea of a new government, but they need to overcome community and family pressure to break away from generational practices of voting for Barisan Nasional. Some rural voters feel that they gain no benefits from having either side of the political divide in power. While these voters generally do not see the point of voting, a last-minute decision to vote may go the way of the party that provides them with immediate gains.

Book excerpt: The neighboring north Indian districts of Jaipur and Ajmer are identical in language, geography, and religious and caste demography. But when the famous Babri Mosque in Ayodhya was destroyed in 1992, Jaipur burned while Ajmer remained peaceful; when the state clashed over low-caste affirmative action quotas in 2008, Ajmer's residents rioted while Jaipur's citizens stayed calm. What explains these divergent patterns of ethnic conflict across multiethnic states? Using archival research and elite interviews in five case studies spanning north, south, and east India, as well as a quantitative analysis of 589 districts, Ajay Verghese shows that the legacies of British colonialism drive contemporary conflict. Because India served as a model for British colonial expansion into parts of Africa and Southeast Asia, this project links Indian ethnic conflict to violent outcomes across an array of multiethnic states, including cases as diverse as Nigeria and Malaysia. The Colonial Origins of Ethnic Violence in India makes important contributions to the study of Indian politics, ethnicity, conflict, and historical legacies.

However, rather than something new, the rulers' resurgence should be viewed as part of a longer term negotiation over the precise boundaries of their role. The Sultan of Johor, Ibrahim Ismail, is arguably the most visible of the country's rulers at present. Since ascending to the throne in 2010, he has constructed a prominent media profile and been active in many areas of policy-making. Sultan Ibrahim Ismail has also weighed in on national-level issues, such as the quality of national education and bilateral relations with Singapore. While the more ceremonial aspects of his actions are inspired by the pivotal role traditionally played by Malay rulers, the more operational aspects hark back to the colonial era when Johor had a reputation for modern administration, well-developed infrastructure, and a high degree of autonomy. At its core, the Sultan raises questions about Malay leadership, and may revive a long-standing contest between the rulers and the political elite, sometimes referred to as a battle between "princes and politicians".
