This book is unique, including a wide variety of records that provide an unbroken view into life on the Clifford estates in England, (as well as the borders of Wales,Ireland, and Scotland) for centuries, as well as the family's involvement at the centre of political life. Here we glimpse the lives of simple widows, traders, farmers, and labourers juxtaposed with the adventures of soldiers, lords and ladies, princes and princesses. We see how rebellions, crusades, and foreign wars impacted both the great and the humble. And we witness changes in the practices of justice and custom. In this book Anne Clifford asserts the centrality of women to the success of the Clifford and other noble families, including the monarchy.Anne Clifford writes herself into this history, asserting her own rights to govern the lands of her father after her decades long inheritance dispute. Anne Clifford's composition of the Great Books draws upon medieval traditions and early modern scholarship and builds upon these through theinclusion of biographies of all the Clifford lords and ladies, along with an extended biography of her mother Margaret Russell and her own autobiographical, "The Life of Mee". Those interested in the lives of medieval and early modern women, changes in culture, the effect of the political uponindividuals, and the inspiring life of Anne Clifford will find this a rich and rewarding book.

Book The Eternal Criminal Record

Download or read book The Eternal Criminal Record written by James B. Jacobs and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over sixty million Americans, possessing a criminal record overshadows everything else about their public identity. A rap sheet, or even a court appearance or background report that reveals a run-in with the law, can have fateful consequences for a person’s interactions with just about everyone else. The Eternal Criminal Record makes transparent a pervasive system of police databases and identity screening that has become a routine feature of American life. The United States is unique in making criminal information easy to obtain by employers, landlords, neighbors, even cyberstalkers. Its nationally integrated rap-sheet system is second to none as an effective law enforcement tool, but it has also facilitated the transfer of ever more sensitive information into the public domain. While there are good reasons for a person’s criminal past to be public knowledge, records of arrests that fail to result in convictions are of questionable benefit. Simply by placing someone under arrest, a police officer has the power to tag a person with a legal history that effectively incriminates him or her for life. In James Jacobs’s view, law-abiding citizens have a right to know when individuals in their community or workplace represent a potential threat. But convicted persons have rights, too. Jacobs closely examines the problems created by erroneous record keeping, critiques the way the records of individuals who go years without a new conviction are expunged, and proposes strategies for eliminating discrimination based on criminal history, such as certifying the records of those who have demonstrated their rehabilitation.

Book Records Classification Concepts Principles and Methods

Download or read book Records Classification Concepts Principles and Methods written by Umi Asma' Mokhtar and published by Chandos Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-19 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Records Classification: Concepts, Principles and Methods: Information, Systems, Context introduces classification, an early part of the research lifecycle. Classification ensures systematic organization of documents and facilitates information retrieval. However, classification systems are not prevalent in records management when compared to their use in other information fields. This book views classification from the records management (RM) perspective by adopting a qualitative approach, with case studies, to gather data by means of interview and document content analysis. Current development of information systems do not take into account the concept of classification from a RM perspective. Such a model is required because the incorporation of information and communication technology (ICT) in managing records is inevitable. The concept of classification from an RM perspective ought to be extended to the ICT team to enable the development of a RM system not limited to storage and retrieval functions, but also with relation to disposal and preservation processes. This proposed model introduces function-based classification to ensure records are classified in context. Gives a step-by-step functional model for constructing a classification system within an organization Advocates for the importance of practicing classification for records, towards competent, transparent, and democratic organizations Helps organizations build their own classification system, thus safeguarding information in a secure and systematic fashion Provides local case studies from Malaysia and puts together a generic, globally applicable model
