Book Entrepreneurial Activity in Malaysia

Download or read book Entrepreneurial Activity in Malaysia written by Paul Jones and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite being the third largest economy in Southeast Asia, Malaysian entrepreneurial activity is under-reported in the scholarly literature. This book extends such research by examining the impact of entrepreneurship on its economy and evaluating the existing systemic problems. The Malaysian economy has benefited from the density of knowledge-based businesses and utilization of the latest technologies in the manufacturing and digital economies. However, Malaysia faces ongoing challenges, namely concentration of wealth in the city, high regional unemployment and workplace gender inequality. In regional areas, there is an over-reliance on agriculture and necessity based entrepreneurship. Consequently, entrepreneurial activity has been encouraged with the creation of eco-systems, seed corn funding and provision of entrepreneurship education to offer entrepreneurial career choices. Providing recommendations and best practice for driving entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial behaviours, this contributed volume presents the first opportunity to reflect on both the success stories and systemic problems related to effective entrepreneurial behaviour in a South East Asian context.

Book Ethnic Chinese Entrepreneurship in Malaysia

Download or read book Ethnic Chinese Entrepreneurship in Malaysia written by Michael Jakobsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of ethnic Chinese in Southeast Asia has a long tradition. What is most striking in these studies is just how difficult it is to generalise about this ethnic group in the region. Whether or not they have been able to identify as Chinese has to a certain extend depended on different processes of social and political engineering, which in turn make them more or less distinct as an ethnic group. In the case of Malaysia, national political schemes such as the affirmative action policy indirectly force the Malaysian ethnic Chinese to conceive of themselves as a coherent collective, and yet, when asked Chinese entrepreneurs in the maintain that despite the affirmative action policy ethnicity is not the a defining deciding factor when it comes to identifying business partners. This book focuses on the consequences of these kinds of policies in the field of inter-ethnic business practices and entrepreneurship in Malaysia within the wider context of the relationship between local, national and global markets. It focuses on the complexities of inter-ethnic relations and in particular, the strong economic position of the ethnic Chinese and their impact on the Malaysian economic scene as well as on the wider Southeast Asian region, underlining the degree to which inter-ethnic relations in Southeast Asia are crucial to understanding the political and economic complexitiescharacteristic of characterizing the region. In turn, it takes small and medium-sized enterprises as case studies, and shows how they are being shaped and in return shape the society in which they constitute a part. In doing so, the book highlights how these companies not only relate to the domestic economy, but also cater to the global economy, and presents a compelling argument for the introduction of a glocalised perspective in international business studies. Ethnic Chinese Entrepreneurship in Malaysia will be welcomed by students and scholars with an interest in Asian studies, political economy, international business studies, inter-ethnic relations and diaspora studies.

Book Entrepreneurial orientation and personal values of Malay entrepreneurs

Download or read book Entrepreneurial orientation and personal values of Malay entrepreneurs written by Rohani Mohd and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: complete, , course: Business Management, language: English, abstract: This study examines personal values for its influence on entrepreneurial orientation, and determines the role of mediator [self efficacy (SE)] and moderator [business environment (BE)] variables on the relationship between personal values (PV) and entrepreneurial orientations (EO). The examination of the mediator-moderator effect involving PV, SE, BE, and their subsequent influence on EO was also undertaken. A survey was administered with the assistance of MARA officers the whole of West Malaysia. The data generated was based on 162 owner managers’ selfrating of PV, SE, BE and EO. Rasch Model and SPSS programs were employed to analyze the data using several different analyses. Multiple regression, hierarchical stepwise regression, One Way ANOVA and Independent t-tests were used to test the hypotheses. The results provided general support for five out of the six hypotheses. Specifically, the direct relationship between personal values (especially religious values) and entrepreneurial orientations was found to be positively related. Different dimension of personal values predicted different dimension of entrepreneurial orientations. Self-efficacy was found to have positive relationship with entrepreneurial orientations; mediate the relationship between personal values of hard work and discipline, and also entrepreneurial orientations. However, business environment did not moderate the relationship between self-efficacy and entrepreneurial orientations. Therefore, the Rasch Model has developed a new entrepreneur competence measure as it generates four classifications of Malay owner managers. As this is a fresh finding, it serves as a new contribution for the present study. The results suggested that religious values and self-efficacy motivation were needed to influence entrepreneurial orientation. Hence, the Malaysian government needs to improve the performance of Malay owner managers by providing them with training, focusing on reinforcing their religious values. This is particularly important for Malay owner managers who have just started in business and those who have survived in their business. The new construct developed for religious values, and the entrepreneurial competence measure employed were important contributions that should be replicated in other countries or other religions, to confirm on the applicability of the measure. Book At the Hands of Fate the Political Economy of Islamic Insurance

Download or read book At the Hands of Fate the Political Economy of Islamic Insurance written by Muhammad Sigit Andhi Rahman and published by Hilmia Press/Primedia eLaunch LLC. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have Islamic insurance systems developed well in some countries, but not in others? Malaysia is considered as Islamic insurance elite due to its relatively large number of operators it houses as well as the sustained growth of Islamic insurance sales within the country, while Indonesia and Pakistan are still in early stages of development. Analyzing the political and social history of Islamization of insurance systems in these three Muslim majority countries in Asia since 1980s, this book demonstrates the development gap between these countries on Islamic insurance results from; firstly, complex bargains made between various groups within each country polity, and those bargains are structured by the country's fundamental political institutions. Secondly, the gap is also an outcome of different societal transformations during the Islamization that 'produce Islam(s)' in these countries. The revival of Islamic principles in these countries does not only create Sharia-compliant financial products but produces Islamic norms, identities, ethics, and practices enacted in the way the communities manage their risk.

Book Embedded Entrepreneurship Market Culture and Micro Business in Insular Southeast Asia

Download or read book Embedded Entrepreneurship Market Culture and Micro Business in Insular Southeast Asia written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embedded Entrepreneurship examines the importance of cultural meaning in the creation and utilization of economic value. Based on case-studies from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, the authors demonstrate that micro-scale entrepreneurship is intertwined with prevailing conceptions, moralities and habituations in the entrepreneurs’ social milieu. More specifically, the volume argues that meaning-making is integral to economic opportunity; that economic actors’ market agency is shaped by cultural experiences; that entrepreneurs' prototypical “individualism” is socially contingent; and that cultural meanings channel economic value among economic and social domains. Addressing core questions about “embedding”, the authors suggest theoretical convergences between economic anthropology and economic sociology. Contributors include: Signe Howell, Ingrid Rudie, Leif Manger, Olaf H. Smedal, Frode F. Jacobsen, Kristianne Ervik, Anette Fagertun, Lars Gjelstad, Nils Hidle, Anja Lillegraven, Solgunn Olsen and Ingvild Solvang.

Book The Riddle of Malaysian Capitalism

Download or read book The Riddle of Malaysian Capitalism written by Peter Searle and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1998-11-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is capitalism in Southeast Asia 'real' or a 'chimera', that is, some Southeast Asian derivative of capitalism that ultimately will not be sustainable? Malaysia, where an intimate relationship has been forged between the state and business in an effort to create Malay capitalists, presents an interesting and illuminating case in the debate. In this work Peter Searle identifies the complex interaction between the state, the dominant political party (UMNO) and business as the source of dynamism or defeat in the development of Malay capitalists. He also challenges a common view that Chinese business groups are completely different from Malay business groups. Overall this study argues against drawing sharp contrasts between dependency and self-reliance, between state and capital, and between rent-seekers and true 'productive' capitalists. For it is from that amalgam of categories and groups the study concludes that a form of capitalism is emerging in Malaysia which is nonetheless remarkably dynamic and resilient, despite its unorthodox origins.

Book The United States and Malaysia

Download or read book The United States and Malaysia written by James W. Gould and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1969 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, a discerning examination of what might be termed Greater Malaysia, is the first comprehensive analysis of American-Malaysian relations and Malaysian foreign policy. A strategic geographic position and rich natural resources lend obvious importance to this region, which encompasses Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. But it is especially significant for its extraordinary political, cultural, and economic accomplishments. Achieving a peaceful transition from British colonies to independence, Malaysia and Singapore formed strong democratic governments and assumed an increasingly responsible role in the international community. The Malay, Chinese, and Indian residents of this area are a fine example of three communities of differing race, religion, and way of life existing together in harmony and cooperation. And the economic system, a successful combination of free enterprise and an extensive social welfare program, continues its stable development. Mr. Gould introduces his work with a geographic description of the lands, a lively ethnographic portrait of each of the three major racial communities, and a brief history of the numerous cultures that have had an impact on the Malaysian peoples. He then examines the governments of Malaysia, which have the problem of "creating a nation out of a multi-racial society in which communalism and local interests are far stronger than the sense of nationalism." Proceeding to the larger problem of establishing a Malaysian nation, he analyzes the forces promoting unity and disunity. Surveying Malaysia's economic progress, the author notes its dependence on the United States, the biggest buyer of Malaysia's rubber and tin, and he projects sustained economic growth. He then discusses Malaysia's regional and international relations, outlining those factors that influence its foreign policy. Concluding with a perceptive interpretation of the United States's connection to the area, he highlights the long history of friendship; the economic interdependence; the American commitment to help Malaysia maintain its political independence and further develop its viable economy; and recent aid and political relations.
