There are signs of gradual recovery and daily COVID-19 positive cases remain relatively low: real GDP growth in 2021 is projected to pick up to 2.2 percent from 0.9 percent in 2020 helped by a good harvest. However, inflation is expected to increase to 9 percent in 2021 from 8.6 percent in 2020, driven by increases in prices of fuel, fertilizer and food, leaving real per capita growth in the negative region.

Book excerpt: Although Timor-Leste has made considerable progress in many areas since its independence in 2002, it faces significant medium-term challenges. The nation has pressing development needs, young institutions, and is highly dependent on oil. Oil revenues from active fields, which have been the main source of funding for government spending, are drying up. Book Malawi

    Book Details:
  • Author : International Monetary Fund. African Dept.

  • Release : 2022-11-23
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 121 pages

Download or read book Malawi written by International Monetary Fund. African Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2022-11-23 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign exchange shortages together with exchange rate misalignment led to a sharp decline in imports including fuel, fertilizer, medicine, and food. Large fiscal deficits, nearly 10 percent of GDP in FY2021/22, have been largely financed by domestic bank borrowing, resulting in rapid money growth and inflation of 25.9 percent in September 2022. Exchange rate pass-through and hikes in food prices added to inflationary pressure. In addition, food insecurity in Malawi has increased dramatically under the impact of multiple tropical storms, below-average crop production, and increasing prices for food and agricultural inputs such as fertilizer and seeds. The latter are expected to affect the current planting season. As a result of these factors, about 20 percent of the population is projected to be acutely food insecure during the upcoming 2022/23 lean season (October 2022-March 2023), more than twice as many as in 2021.

Book Sustainable Development in Post Pandemic Africa

Download or read book Sustainable Development in Post Pandemic Africa written by Fred Olayele and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With both domestic and external financing expected to dry up in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, this book argues that there is a need for fresh ideas and new strategies for achieving sustainable development in Africa. In addition to triggering the most severe recession in nearly a century, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted global value chains, causing unprecedented damage to healthcare systems, economies, and well-being, hitting the world’s most vulnerable people the hardest. Even before the pandemic, Africa was suffering from the effects of low commodity prices, sluggish GDP growth, high debt levels, low levels of domestic savings, and weak private capital inflows. This book argues that now, as the continent emerges from the current crisis, it will be important to reconfigure current financing sources under a forward-looking framework that incorporates other non-traditional financing tools and mechanisms such as public-private partnerships, sovereign wealth funds, gender lens investing, new growth drivers, and emerging and disruptive technologies. Finally, the book concludes by adopting a sectoral approach and examining the real economy impacts of new growth drivers such as agriculture value chains, industrialization, tourism, and the blue economy. Drawing on a range of original research as well as insights from practice, this book will be a useful guide for Global Development and African Studies researchers, as well as for policy makers, investors, finance specialists, and global business practitioners and entrepreneurs.

Operation power and freedom for results-based management (RBM) and implementation of Malawi Growth and Development Strategy II (MGDS-II) are also suggested by the Executive Board. Measures to ensure revenue gain concurrent with spending have also been recommended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uganda's economic recovery is strengthening on the back of low inflation, favorable agricultural production, and strong activity in industrial and services sectors. The envisaged start of oil production in late 2025 is expected to further boost growth and improve fiscal and external balances in the medium term. Risks are mostly on the downside, including continued fallout from the Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA), which complicates already tight external financing conditions, potential delays in oil production, and climate-related shocks.

Book Exchange rates remittances and competitiveness in Haiti

Download or read book Exchange rates remittances and competitiveness in Haiti written by Díaz-Bonilla, Eugenio and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-06-16 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exchange rate (ER) is one of the most important macroeconomic variables in the economy, defining the price of the domestic currency in relation to a foreign currency or currencies. The level and changes (both actual and expected) of the ER (nominal and real, defined below) have wide influence throughout the economy, affecting and being affected by the demand and supply of traded and nontraded goods and services, the demand and supply of money and monetary assets denominated in local currency in comparison with assets denominated in other currencies, and inflows or outflows of capitals and remittances, among main key variables. In consequence, the ER and ER policies influence growth, employment, inflation, international trade, and banking and fiscal stability (a classical general treatment can be found in Krueger 1983; see also Corden 1990).

Book Republic of Mozambique

Download or read book Republic of Mozambique written by International Monetary Fund. African Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mozambique’s economic situation had been improving until Tropical Cyclone Idai and Kenneth hit the country in March and April, respectively. Economic growth was recovering gradually and becoming broader based, and inflation reached low single digits. Economic activity is expected to decelerate sharply in 2019 due to the supply shock to productive capacity, but it should rebound to pre-cyclone levels by 2020. In April, the IMF Executive Board approved US$118 million in emergency assistance under the Rapid Credit Facility (RCF). The authorities are committed to macroeconomic stability while fostering inclusive growth and addressing governance challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses recent developments, outlook, and risks related to the economy of Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe’s economic difficulties have deepened. GDP growth slowed significantly to 1.1 percent in 2015, mainly because of the impact of adverse weather conditions on agricultural output, and power generation. The current account balance improved in 2015, because of lower prices for oil imports, subdued economic activity, and fiscal consolidation efforts. Fiscal performance in 2015 was better than programmed, despite the adverse macroeconomic environment. Despite spending pressures to mitigate the impact of the drought, the authorities remain committed to fiscal discipline; they target a primary cash deficit of 0.2 percent of GDP for 2016.
