Book excerpt: These days people love art ndash; especially contemporary art, which has become a constantly growing cultural factor. Fascinated by the artists' creative milieu, the public strives to share in its atmosphere of being something special. In a time of upheaval, this publication offers a look behind the scenes of the contemporary art world in which the triangle of artist, artwork, and viewer has long since been expanded many times over. The relationships between artist, collector, gallerist, curator, and critic frequently inform the works' very contents, and these aspects are increasingly represented in the works themselves. Many artists keep an eye on what happens in the art world and reflect the more and more lavish trade: from the creative process and the mounting of an exhibition to the rituals of the scene. English and German text.

Book excerpt: A critical study of the use of language and the proliferation of text in 1960s art and experimental music, with close examinations of works by Vito Acconci, Carl Andre, John Cage, Douglas Huebler, Andy Warhol, Lawrence Weiner, La Monte Young, and others. Language has been a primary element in visual art since the 1960s—in the form of printed texts, painted signs, words on the wall, recorded speech, and more. In Words to Be Looked At, Liz Kotz traces this practice to its beginnings, examining works of visual art, poetry, and experimental music created in and around New York City from 1958 to 1968. In many of these works, language has been reduced to an object nearly emptied of meaning. Robert Smithson described a 1967 exhibition at the Dwan Gallery as consisting of “Language to be Looked at and/or Things to be Read.” Kotz considers the paradox of artists living in a time of social upheaval who use words but chose not to make statements with them. Kotz traces the proliferation of text in 1960s art to the use of words in musical notation and short performance scores. She makes two works the “bookends” of her study: the “text score” for John Cage's legendary 1952 work 4'33”—written instructions directing a performer to remain silent during three arbitrarily determined time brackets—and Andy Warhol's notorious a: a novel—twenty-four hours of endless talk, taped and transcribed—published by Grove Press in 1968. Examining works by artists and poets including Vito Acconci, Carl Andre, George Brecht, Douglas Huebler, Joseph Kosuth, Jackson Mac Low, and Lawrence Weiner, Kotz argues that the turn to language in 1960s art was a reaction to the development of new recording and transmission media: words took on a new materiality and urgency in the face of magnetic sound, videotape, and other emerging electronic technologies. Words to Be Looked At is generously illustrated, with images of many important and influential but little-known works.

Book The Power of Fantasy

Download or read book The Power of Fantasy written by David Crowley and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KEYNOTE: This generously illustrated book explores the best works of contemporary art from Poland by a generation of artists who have made their careers since the fall of communism in the country in 1989. Polish artists such as Monika Sosnowska, Wilhelm Sasnal, Piotr Uklanski, Katarzyna Kozyra, and Robert Kusmirowski, among many others, enjoy considerable international renown and their works feature in major galleries and collections of art around the world. This book demonstrates how the fantastic and the magical, the mad and the absurd have been powerful forces in contemporary Polish art. Often sharply critical of the changing world in which they live, these artists sustain a tradition of dissent and critical reflection which is deeply-rooted in Polish culture. For this generation of artists, like others before them, fantasy has not been a way of escaping reality but of challenging it. To trace these deep roots, the essays in this book examine contemporary Polish art in the context of masterpieces by figures like Tadeusz Kantor, Magdalena Abakanowicz, and Bruno Schulz. AUTHOR: David Crowley is a lecturer at the Royal College of Art, London. Zofia Machnicka is Deputy Director of the Polish Cultural Institute in Brussells. Andrzej Szczerski is a lecturer at the Institute of Art History of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. ILLUSTRATIONS: 170 colour
