Book excerpt: In this unique, highly detailed examination, Gordon C Cook investigates the very beginnings of tropical medicine through the work of Dr George Low (1872-1952). Widely known as the 'father of tropical medicine', Low was a pioneering force in the study of Caribbean diseases and the development of preventative medicine. His work on parisitology and importance of epidemiology and ecology was ground-breaking. This remarkable analysis contains, for the very first time, transcriptions of the thirty-one letters from Low to Sir Patrick Manson, Medical Advisor to the Colonial Office during this expedition. The letters reveal Low's thought processes and landmark discoveries in medical science. This handsome, hardback volume is ideal for all those with an interest in tropical medicine, medical and naval historians, and librarians.

Book Ecology of Insect Vector Populations

Download or read book Ecology of Insect Vector Populations written by R. C. Muirhead-Thomson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology of Insect Vector Populations provides a review and appraisal of the ecology of insect vectors of disease, with particular attention to the problems of sampling adult insect vector populations. The book examines the manner in which the inter-related problems of insect ecology, behavior, and population sampling have been explored over a wide range of investigations on disease vectors. The text focuses mainly on the study of blood-sucking dipterous insects such as tse-tse flies, mosquitoes, black-flies, and midges along with the appraisal of relevant studies on house-fly and blow-fly populations. The studies of the ecology of the wingless vectors of disease or plague such as the fleas are carried out extensively. The dissertation will be of interest to medical entomologists, animal ecologists, and epidemiologists.

Book Engineering Vulnerability

  • Author : Sarah E. Vaughn
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2022-02-07
  • ISBN : 1478022728
  • Pages : 148 pages

Download or read book Engineering Vulnerability written by Sarah E. Vaughn and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Engineering Vulnerability Sarah E. Vaughn examines climate adaptation against the backdrop of ongoing processes of settler colonialism and the global climate change initiatives that seek to intervene in the lives of the world’s most vulnerable. Her case study is Guyana in the aftermath of the 2005 catastrophic flooding that ravaged the country’s Atlantic coastal plain. The country’s ensuing engineering projects reveal the contingencies of climate adaptation and the capacity of flooding to shape Guyanese expectations about racial (in)equality. Analyzing the coproduction of race and vulnerability, Vaughn details why climate adaptation has implications for how we understand the past and the continued human settlement of a place. Such understandings become particularly apparent not only through experts’ and ordinary citizens’ disputes over resources but in their attention to the ethical practice of technoscience over time. Approaching climate adaptation this way, Vaughn exposes the generative openings as well as gaps in racial thinking for theorizing climate action, environmental justice, and, more broadly, future life on a warming planet. Book Global Health Impacts of Vector Borne Diseases

Download or read book Global Health Impacts of Vector Borne Diseases written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathogens transmitted among humans, animals, or plants by insects and arthropod vectors have been responsible for significant morbidity and mortality throughout recorded history. Such vector-borne diseases â€" including malaria, dengue, yellow fever, and plague â€" together accounted for more human disease and death in the 17th through early 20th centuries than all other causes combined. Over the past three decades, previously controlled vector-borne diseases have resurged or reemerged in new geographic locations, and several newly identified pathogens and vectors have triggered disease outbreaks in plants and animals, including humans. Domestic and international capabilities to detect, identify, and effectively respond to vector-borne diseases are limited. Few vaccines have been developed against vector-borne pathogens. At the same time, drug resistance has developed in vector-borne pathogens while their vectors are increasingly resistant to insecticide controls. Furthermore, the ranks of scientists trained to conduct research in key fields including medical entomology, vector ecology, and tropical medicine have dwindled, threatening prospects for addressing vector-borne diseases now and in the future. In June 2007, as these circumstances became alarmingly apparent, the Forum on Microbial Threats hosted a workshop to explore the dynamic relationships among host, pathogen(s), vector(s), and ecosystems that characterize vector-borne diseases. Revisiting this topic in September 2014, the Forum organized a workshop to examine trends and patterns in the incidence and prevalence of vector-borne diseases in an increasingly interconnected and ecologically disturbed world, as well as recent developments to meet these dynamic threats. Participants examined the emergence and global movement of vector-borne diseases, research priorities for understanding their biology and ecology, and global preparedness for and progress toward their prevention, control, and mitigation. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
