Download or read book Rideau Waterway written by Robert Legget and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2001-12-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Many years ago, I decided to write a book about the Rideau Canal. It is, therefore, with mixed feelings that I see that Robert Legget has beaten me to the tape. He is to be congratulated ... The definitive work on the Rideau has been written, and I shall value my copy.' Eric Arthur Since the publication of the first edition in 1955, Rideau Waterway has informed and delighted readers, among them historians, engineers, and vacationers. First revised in 1972, this classic guide has once again been brought up to date in a new edition. Robert Legget offers a rich history of the Rideau Canal – an adventure in engineering, built by soldiers and civilian labourers through swamp, bush, and rocky wilderness – as well as a guide to current places of interest along the waterway and stories of the pioneers who settled there. He resurrects the controversy surrounding Colonel John By, Superintending Engineer of the construction of the canal, whose leadership was debated in the British press and after whom By town was named. By town is now Ottawa; Legget traces the city's development from construction camp to national capital. This new edition contains three times as many photographs as the original, and has been even more thoroughly updated than was the revised edition of 1972. Legget has added new information about historical figures and references to developments in the surroundings: the St Lawrence Seaway, the Carillon hydroelectric project, new roads, new bridges, and more. The appendices have been revised to include the latest maps, charts, and fishing information available. In all, Legget has provided a lively guide for boaters and other travellers, and for all those interested in the history of eastern Ontario.

Download or read book In Search of a Soul written by Raymond and published by D & M Publishers. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great architect's personal account of conceiving, designing and building the new Canadian War Museum, a homage to the courage of all Canadians. "It's astonishing," says historian Jack Granatstein of Raymond Moriyama's design for the new Canadian War Museum. "There is a context, there's understanding, there's intelligence...This is the best museum in the whole world. Without question." In Search of a Soul is revered architect Moriyama's personal account of conceiving and creating this important -- perhaps iconic -- national monument, which opened to great acclaim on May 8, 2005, the sixtieth anniversary of VE Day. Illustrated throughout with full-colour plans, drawings and photos, it is a compelling story of one architect's commitment to a vision, and to the country that provided his inspiration. "How can architecture reflect the ambience of battle without overpowering the visitor or glorifying war? What is Canadian? What does war mean?" Moriyama explores the difficult questions he wrestled with as the design took shape. In this bold new museum -- and equally bold book -- a great Canadian artist challenges us to address these troubling questions.

Download or read book Culturing Wilderness in Jasper National Park written by I.S. MacLaren and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 2012-07-02 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adults need playgrounds. In 1907, the Canadian government designated a vast section of the Rocky Mountains as Jasper Forest Park. Tourists now play where Native peoples once lived, fur traders toiled, and Métis families homesteaded. In Culturing Wilderness in Jasper National Park, I.S. MacLaren and eight other writers unearth the largely unrecorded past of the upper Athabasca River watershed, and bring to light two centuries' worth of human history, tracing the evolution of trading routes into the Rockies' largest park. Serious history enthusiasts and those with an interest in Canada's national parks will find a sense of connection in this long overdue study of Jasper.
Download or read book J L Ilsley A Political Biography written by Barry Cahill and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A farmer’s son from rural Nova Scotia, J. L. Ilsley (1894–1967) is an almost forgotten figure who played a key role in government during the Second World War, even though he was despised by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. Ilsley was spectacularly successful in cajoling and compelling Canadians to pay for the war. He became a highly regarded national figure. He gradually established his claim to succeed William Lyon Mackenzie King as Prime Minister when the time came. Ultimately, in his devious way, King thwarted Ilsley’s ambition. Ilsley abandoned politics to take up the post of chief justice in Nova Scotia for 17 years. His place in Canadian political history has been undermined by family members who destroyed his personal papers. Historian and biographer Barry Cahill has pieced together the story of Ilsley’s career for the first time. He used the personal papers of other Ottawa figures of the times, previously secret cabinet records, and glimpses of the man as seen by others in his circle – including, of course, Mackenzie King in his voluminous diaries.

Download or read book National Gallery of Canada written by Douglas Ord and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003-05-26 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ord looks at the gallery's historical and intellectual context - from 1910 when Eric Brown became the gallery's founding director, through Jean Sutherland Boggs, to Shirley Thomson - shedding light on its acquisitions, government policy towards the arts, and the public's deep-rooted suspicion of avant-garde art. In showing how Canadian art came to be housed in a building whose architectural and ideological sources include Gothic cathedrals, Islamic mosques, Egyptian temples, St Peter's Basilica, and the squared-stone facades of the Holy City of Jerusalem, The National Gallery of Canada insightfully explores the relationship of Canada's art and its National Gallery to the project of the Canadian nation state.
