Book Maladies of the Indian Banking Sector

Download or read book Maladies of the Indian Banking Sector written by Saumitra Bhaduri and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The global financial crisis of 2007-09 highlighted the importance of capital structure for the economy as a whole and for individual firms as well. The ensuing credit and profitability crunch due to the contraction of the global economy made it vitally imperative to understand how the capital structure choices of the firms are affected and what impact these choices have on the functioning of the markets. Since, like in most emerging countries, the capital structure of Indian firms is dominated by bank borrowing, it has become important to understand the role of bank borrowing in a larger context. Maladies of the Indian Banking Sector provides an in-depth analysis of bank credit allocation to non-financial companies in the Indian corporate sector over a long period of 28 years. The authors also conduct a micro-level analysis in the backdrop of recent banking scams in the country which exposed the fragility and quality of the banks' governance in reducing misappropriation of bank credit. The book brings a broader perspective to assess whether weak banks are rolling over their loans to less-deserving firms and tending to avoid declaring them as non-performing assets (NPAs). It contributes to understanding the nature of the maladies beyond the conventional approach of studying the trends in NPAs and provides a deeper insight into the structural challenges that determine the allocation of bank credit in the economy and of capital formation at large"--

Book Deregulation and Efficiency of Indian Banks

Download or read book Deregulation and Efficiency of Indian Banks written by Sunil Kumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to assess the efficacy of India’s financial deregulation programme by analyzing the developments in cost efficiency and total factor productivity growth across different ownership types and size classes in the banking sector over the post-deregulation years. The work also gauges the impact of inclusion or exclusion of a proxy for non-traditional activities on the cost efficiency estimates for Indian banks, and ranking of distinct ownership groups. It also investigates the hitherto neglected aspect of the nature of returns-to-scale in the Indian banking industry. In addition, the work explores the key bank-specific factors that explain the inter-bank variations in efficiency and productivity growth. Overall, the empirical results of this work allow us to ascertain whether the gradualist approach to reforming the banking system in a developing economy like India has yielded the most significant policy goal of achieving efficiency and productivity gains. The authors believe that the findings of this book could give useful policy directions and suggestions to other developing economies that have embarked on a deregulation path or are contemplating doing so.

Book Hits Misses

Download or read book Hits Misses written by Madan Sabnavis and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you often wonderIs my money safe in banks? India is grappling with its worst banking crisis ever, and we are still trying to figure out what landed us here. This book analyses the role of the government and RBI in allowing the problem to reach the dimension it has assumed today. When will the never-ending NPA issue be resolved? Does it make sense to merge two PSBs when the culture and governance structures are alike? Should the RBI reserves be used in times of crisis? Should the tenure of a CEO be long or short? The book ponders and debates on some of these questions. Hits and Misses presents the two sides of the Indian banking story by giving an account of the reforms as well as quandaries in times of extraordinary economic and political challenges. The book answers many relevant questions by highlighting the highs and lows of the banking sector, which became subjects of debate in media and financial circles.

Book excerpt: Over the last decade, Indian banks in general and the government-owned public sector ones in particular have gradually got themselves into a big mess. Their bad loans, or loans which haven't been repaid for ninety days or more, crossed Rs 10 lakh crore as of 31 March 2018. To put it in perspective, this figure is approximately seven times the value of farm loan waivers given by all state governments in India put together. And this became the bad money of the Indian financial system. Why were the corporates unable to return these loans? Was it because they had no intention of doing so?Who were the biggest defaulters of them all? Are Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi just the tip of the iceberg? How much money has the government spent trying to rescue these banks? How are the private sector banks gradually taking over Indian banking? Is your money in public sector banks safe? How are you paying for this in different ways? And what are the solutions to deal with this? In Bad Money, Vivek Kaul answers these and many more questions, peeling layer after layer of the NPA (non-performing assets) problem. He goes back to the history of Indian banking, providing a long, deep and hard look at the overall Indian economy. The result is a gripping financial thriller that is a must for understanding a crisis that threatens our banking system and economy.
