Book Malachi s Use of Joel s Day of the Lord

Download or read book Malachi s Use of Joel s Day of the Lord written by Petronio M. Genebago and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-07 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Day of the Lord texts of Malachi (Mal 3:2, 7; 4:5) demonstrate that he seems to allude to Joel’s Day of the Lord (2:11, 13, 31 [MT 3:4]). Malachi’s Day of the Lord seems to have a strong inner-biblical relationship with the Day of the Lord motif of Joel. A significant interpretive loss is committed when allusion is recognized in the source text but ignored and not explored. Thus, the passages themselves call for an inner-biblical allusion study. In addition, the interpretive significance of Joel’s Day of the Lord in Malachi has not been investigated comprehensively as the review of literature and intertextual and inner-biblical studies on Malachi validated. Thus, these are the interrelated questions: (a) “What are the criteria to verify the inner-biblical connection between Malachi and Joel on the Day of the Lord?” (b) “How did Malachi use Joel’s Day of the Lord motif?” (c) “How did Malachi develop the Day of the Lord theme in his book?” There are three purposes of this study. The first is to identify objective criteria to verify the inner-biblical connection between Malachi and Joel on the Day of the Lord. The second is to determine how Malachi used Joel’s Day of the Lord motif. The last is to ascertain how Malachi developed the Day of the Lord theme in his book.

Book Joel Obadiah Malachi

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Weston Baker
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 0310207231
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book Joel Obadiah Malachi written by David Weston Baker and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2006 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three short prophetic books of the Old Testament each contain a dual message. On one hand are messages of impending judgment---for all peoples on the Day of the Lord, for an enemy of Israel, and for Israel herself. On the other hand are messages of great hope---of the pouring out of God's Spirit, of restoration and renewal, and of a coming Messiah. Placing judgment and hope together in such a manner may seem paradoxical to a contemporary mindset. But the complete message of these prophets gives a fuller picture of God---who despises and rightly judges sin and rebellion, but who also lovingly invites people to return to him so that he might bestow his wonderful grace and blessings. It is a message no less timely today than when these books were first written, and David W. Baker skillfully bridges the centuries in helping believers today understand and apply it. Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable---but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our postmodern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully today.

Book Understanding End Times Prophecy

Download or read book Understanding End Times Prophecy written by Paul Benware and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians think of end times prophecy as a gigantic, intimidating puzzle -- difficult to piece together and impossible to figure out. But every puzzle can be solved if you approach it the right way. Paul Benware compares prophecy to a picture puzzle. Putting the edge pieces together first builds the 'framework' that makes it easier to fit the other pieces in their place. According to Benware, the framework for eschatology is the biblical covenants. He begins his comprehensive survey by explaining the major covenants. Then he discusses several different interpretations of end times prophecy. Benware digs into the details of the Rapture, the Great Tribulation, the judgements and resurrections, and the millennial kingdom. But he also adds a unique, personal element to the study, answering questions as: -Why study bible prophecy? -What difference does it make if I'm premillenial or amillenial? If what the Bible says about the future puzzles you, Understanding End Times Prophecy will help you put together the pieces and see the big picture.

Book When the Son of Man Didn t Come

Download or read book When the Son of Man Didn t Come written by Christopher M. Hays and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The delay of the Parousia—the second coming of Christ—has vexed Christians since the final decades of the first century. This volume offers a critical, constructive, and interdisciplinary solution to that dilemma. The argument is grounded in Christian tradition while remaining fully engaged with the critical insights and methodological approaches of twenty-first-century scholars. The authors argue that the deferral of Christ’s prophesied return follows logically from the conditional nature of ancient predictive prophecy: Jesus has not come again because God’s people have not yet responded sufficiently to Christ’s call for holy and godly action. God, in patient mercy, remains committed to cooperating with humans to bring about the consummation of history with Jesus’ return. Collaboratively written by an interdisciplinary and ecumenical team of scholars, the argument draws on expertise in biblical studies, systematics, and historical theology to fuse critical biblical exegesis with a powerful theological paradigm that generates an apophatic and constructive Christian eschatology. The authors, however, have done more than tackle a daunting theological problem: as the group traverses issues from higher criticism through doctrine and into liturgy and ethics, they present an innovative approach for how to do Christian theology in the twenty-first-century academy.

Book Commentary on the Book of Malachi

Download or read book Commentary on the Book of Malachi written by Claudius Brown and published by . This book was released on 2023-10-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Malachi is one of the books in the Old Testament of the Bible. It is a prophetic book that deals with several themes, including: Prophecy and Rebuke: Malachi contains messages from the prophet Malachi to the people of Israel. It includes both prophecies of future events and rebukes for the people's disobedience and lack of faithfulness to God. Covenant and Relationship: The book emphasizes the importance of the covenant between God and the Israelites. Malachi addresses issues related to the priesthood, offerings, and the people's disregard for their covenant relationship with God. Messenger of the Lord: Malachi speaks of the coming of a messenger who will prepare the way for the Lord. This is seen by many as a reference to John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Jesus Christ in the New Testament. Day of the Lord: Malachi also discusses the concept of the "Day of the Lord," a time of judgment and purification that will come in the future. Overall, the Book of Malachi is a call to repentance, a reminder of God's faithfulness to His covenant, and a message of hope for the future restoration of the people of Israel.
