Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making the Old Sunday School New All adults to-day who attended Sunday school when they were children, and still continue, are aware of a great change in Sunday school conceptions and convictions. Then a Sunday school was supposed to be almost entirely outside the realm of educational law: some miraculous power was supposed to be present and active because it was God's school; the very fact that God's Word was studied, and songs of Zion sung, and fervent prayers offered, was considered sufficient guarantee against failure: its high purpose would justify and sanctify any means whatsoever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Sunday School Two social institutions in our country have a larger number of servants and expend more money than any others; they are our schools and our churches. Neither can show any material, concrete products, such as we see coming from factories and shops; yet both are absolutely essential to modern social and material welfare. There are many points at which these two institutions come together, but the Sunday-school affords the point of closest contact. It is the church school; it is the expression by the churches of their faith in the method of the schools, and, in America at least, it is the expression by the public of its confidence that the church will in time meet the need for thorough religious education. The primary aim of this book is to study the development of the Sunday-school with a view to determining whether or not it will be able to meet the serious and steadily increasing demands of the present age. Its past development reveals its capacity for progressive adaptation. We look back that we may the better go forward. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building a Successful Sunday School It is not easy to define a successful Sunday school. It is not easy to indicate the many elements which go to make for success. Without undertaking an exhaustive statement, it may suffice to say that the Sunday school which lays claim to success must do two things: (i) it must reach its constituency; (2) it must teach its constituency. Book Modern Methods in Sunday School Work

Download or read book Modern Methods in Sunday School Work written by George Whitefield Mead and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Methods in Sunday-School Work: The New Evangelism Explanatory. The genesis of this book was my desire for the improvement of the Sunday-schools under my immediate care. As a pastor, I found myself pitifully inadequate to meet the requirements of Sunday-school work. It had been my privilege but a few years ago to study in a representative theological seminary, where I covered the full courses of "catechetics," "pastoral theology," etc., yet the training of this representative institution did not "train" relative to the principles, problems, needs and growing demands of this foundation work of the Church, the Bible-school. In parish work, therefore, I found myself in the growing years unequipped, and face to face with the awful alternative that the Sunday-school must be improved or suffer the loss - as the Church at large, for the most part, has suffered for years - of scores of youth. I raised the question, "What can I do?" For suggestion I consulted every known publication on Sunday-school work and methods. These books say many excellent things and can be read with profit, but I found too much of theory, abstract reasoning, and presentation of thought from the view-point of one man for the meeting of practical need. I, therefore, sought through personal visitation and correspondence to learn from the most experienced and successful Sunday-school workers who are now actually in the field and who are doing things, - I sought to learn from them the full descriptions of their actual working methods. A generous response gave a wealth of information. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Challenge of the Sunday School Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Challenge of the Sunday School Classic Reprint written by Charles P. Wiles and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Challenge of the Sunday School What the public school system is to the state the Sunday school is to the Church. The educational function of the Church is carried on largely through the Sunday school. When Christ gave the command to His disciples to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature, He added, "Teaching them." There can be no true preaching without an element of teaching, but all teaching cannot be included in preaching. Teaching carries with it two distinct ideas: the direct and personal character of the message, and the catechetical form of instruction. The Church has both her preaching and her teaching service. The Sunday school is the Church teaching. The justification of the Sunday school can be traced easily to the command and example of our Saviour. Within the past ten years a voluminous amount of literature on the history and work of the Sunday school has been published. The result is that not only has every aspect of the activity of this institution been fully covered, but there has also been given it a new estimate and value. The Sunday school looms larger than ever before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament in the Sunday-School The primary purpose of this essay is to examine the adaptability Of the Old Testament as material for the Sunday-school curriculum according to the principles (1) of education, (2) Of biblical criticism, and (3) of the Christian conception Of life and of society. Notwithstanding the vast amount Of work that has been done recently in preparing new Sunday-school curricula, such an examination has never been made, nor have these three principles been brought together before for this purpose. These principles Of education and Of religion are stated briefly in the present chapter. To set forth the position of biblical scholarship as it applies to the use of the Old Testament in the Sunday school, together with the educational prob lems involved, two sections are added, one on Israel's Religion and the other on Israel's Literature. The graded curricula discussed in the last section are representative, not exhaustive. The discussion is an examination, in the light Of the three principles enunciated above, of the Old Testament material used in these curricula. Book By Products of the Rural Sunday School Classic Reprint

Download or read book By Products of the Rural Sunday School Classic Reprint written by J. M. Somerndike and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By-Products of the Rural Sunday School Increasing attention is being given to the Sunday school. This is due to the recognition that it has become the most important agency in the religious instruction of our youth. We do not refer to the Sunday school apart from the Church, but to the Church working through the Sunday school. We are beginning to realize that In America both the Church and the nation must depend largely upon the Sunday school for the Christian instruction of our boys and girls, as well as for the Bible study of our adults. Earnest efforts are being made to render our Sunday schools more efficient, so that better and more abundant results may be obtained from the work done in them. Consideration, however, has thus far been given for the most part to the larger schools in our towns and cities. It is well for us, therefore, to have our attention directed to the smaller rural schools. The majority of our Sunday schools are of this character. In many cases these schools are taking the place of churches in scattered communities. A church could not be supported, but a Sunday school can be carried on by the people themselves, and may become the center of the religious life of the neighborhood. Book The Modern Sunday School in Principle and Practice Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Modern Sunday School in Principle and Practice Classic Reprint written by Henry Frederick Cope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Sunday School in Principle and Practice The last ten years have seen greater progress in religious education than any preceding decade, perhaps greater than any five decades. When this book was first published, a little over eight years ago, it advocated many reforms which have now become accomplished facts. On the educational principles then laid down the school has been reorganised or at least the principles have been accepted and the newer methods accepted so that it is no longer necessary to treat them in a prophetic manner except to explain their elabo ration and intrication and to look forward to their further development. In addition so many new opportunities have opened up to the school and, as our social life has changed, some new duties have appeared before it. Perhaps the need for a thorough revision of a book on methods is the best evidence of the progress and increased efficiency of the Sunday school. Book First Lessons on the Bible

Download or read book First Lessons on the Bible written by Edward H. Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons on the Bible: Written for His Sunday School in Worcester These Lessons are intended to be used at whatever age it is thought best for children to begin the study of the Bible. They have been tried in my own Sunday School by scholars from ten to seventeen years old. The plan must be left to explain, and, if possible, justify itself. I will only say that the general idea was to take up simply the salient points of the Old and New Testaments, without confusing the scholar's mind with such details as have no necessary bearing on the progress of events. The subject has been treated biographically; partly, because the young mind is more interested in persons than in abstract ideas, partly, because the Whole Bible really grew out of individual thought and life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday School Problem Our Sunday Schools are a national institution. They have been an organised, effective branch of our educational system for over a century, and have played an important part - greater than is generally realised - in the uplifting Of the people. Yet, notwithstanding the great strides education has made, and the adoption Of reformed and more scientific methods Of instruction in our Day Schools, the Sunday School has, generally speaking, advanced very little from its early type. The Sunday School is with us: the question is, are we to keep it If so, then we must reform it. This little book has been penned in the hope of drawing the attention of the reader to the existence of a Sunday School Problem, and to promote in some measure Sunday School reform. We must first realise that our Sunday Schools are lagging behind educationally. Then we must find the causes for this, and, finally, endeavour to remove them.
