Download or read book Making Space for the Divine written by Peter Mulraney and published by Peter Mulraney. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insights of a modern mystic Peter Mulraney is a modern day or urban mystic. Unlike ancient mystics, he’s not secluded in a monastery or ashram but lives an everyday life much like yours. Making Space For The Divine invites you to join Peter in reflecting on some of the insights he’s received from making space for the divine in his busy life. Peter sees himself as a mystic and not a guru, so this is a book of insights to contemplate, not a set of teachings you will be asked to believe. Hopefully, while you’re reflecting on Peter’s insights, you’ll receive a few of your own.

Davis argue that God's interaction with our world is a possibility affirmed equally by the Bible and the contemporary scientific record. Book excerpt: The inspiration for this book came from a series of teachings about the trials that many people have shared with me. These trials , and the choices we make in the midst of our struggles, are dramatically affected by whether or not we have made space for God in our lives. Not just Sunday-morning space or Bible-study space or prayer-time space, but openness at the very center of our lives. Although we so often clutter and even squander the space God originally created in us, He still wants to live there. He is gently persistent, infinitely patient, unfathomably faithful. When we are ready and willing, if we allow Him, He promises to use whatever we make available. And God wastes neither time nor space: He will begin renovations as soon as He gets the go-ahead.

Download or read book Making Space written by Jennifer M. Groh and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowing where things are seems effortless. Yet our brains devote tremendous computational power to figuring out the simplest details about spatial relationships. Going to the grocery store or finding our cell phone requires sleuthing and coordination across different sensory and motor domains. Making Space traces this mental detective work to explain how the brain creates our sense of location. But it goes further, to make the case that spatial processing permeates all our cognitive abilities, and that the brain’s systems for thinking about space may be the systems of thought itself. Our senses measure energy in the form of light, sound, and pressure on the skin, and our brains evaluate these measurements to make inferences about objects and boundaries. Jennifer Groh describes how eyes detect electromagnetic radiation, how the brain can locate sounds by measuring differences of less than one one-thousandth of a second in how long they take to reach each ear, and how the ear’s balance organs help us monitor body posture and movement. The brain synthesizes all this neural information so that we can navigate three-dimensional space. But the brain’s work doesn’t end there. Spatial representations do double duty in aiding memory and reasoning. This is why it is harder to remember how to get somewhere if someone else is driving, and why, if we set out to do something and forget what it was, returning to the place we started can jog our memory. In making space the brain uses powers we did not know we have.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a growing recognition that a mature analysis of scientific and technological activity requires an understanding of its spatial contexts. Without these contexts, indeed, scientific practice as such is scarcely conceivable. Making Space for Science brings together contributors with diverse interests in the history, sociology and cultural studies of science and technology since the Renaissance. The editors aim to provide a series of studies, drawn from the history of science and engineering, from sociology and sociology and science, from literature and science, and from architecture and design history, which examine the spatial foundations of the sciences from a number of complementary perspectives.

Book Leading Together

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicole S. Oliver Snyder
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2017-01-06
  • ISBN : 1532607679
  • Pages : 169 pages

Download or read book Leading Together written by Nicole S. Oliver Snyder and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diversity and equality are terms swamping social media, news outlets, and campuses these days. While the desire for diversity may be sincere it is also superficial. With genuine diversity there is a profusion of perspectives. Yet when ideas and arguments are limited to "tweets" forgotten to another fleeting proclamation any hope for reasoned reflection is lost. How do leaders keep up and effectively lead? Nicole Oliver Snyder describes how mindfulness and spiritual practices are both in the DNA of Christian tradition and are powerful to unite. Intentional time to consider divergent ideas makes space to recognize the ideas for what they are--and see their value in addition, rather than contrary to one's own. Encountering limited traction due to the inherent reality of information overload in our super-connected daily experience makes applying these practices all the more imperative. This book describes research and a possible way for leaders to lead together collaboratively, with equity and unbounded diversity. Here, Dr. Snyder explores what it means to live God's image as a leader, drawing from scripture and theology, neuroscience, and the behavioral sciences. This book is academic and practical, and the start of a discussion about what "good" and "successful" leadership might look like.

Book excerpt: Written from an ecumenical standpoint as a practical aid for moving those experienced in individual spiritual direction toward group practices This book responds to the movement to expand spiritual direction beyond the classic on-with-one model. Group spiritual direction has the potential to offer the rich experience of individual spiritual direction to a much wider audience, yet very little has been written to provide guidance for starting such groups. This book responds to that challenge. It outlines ways that a diverse and ecumenical group of spiritual directors worked to initiate groups in multiple contexts. It examines the many variables-among directors, directees, even meeting spaces-that affect and enliven this ministry. And it summarizes pitfalls, success, and discoveries.

  • Publisher : SPCK
  • Release : 2016-10-28
  • ISBN : 0281078165

Download or read book The Divine Dance written by Richard Rohr and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Divine Dance has become a classic for fans of Richard Rohr and an important book on Christian mysticism, it provides a fresh perspective for anyone studying or teaching the trinity. The Trinity is the central doctrine of Christianity, but it is still widely considered a mystery we won't ever fully understand. Should we still try to understand it, even so? If we could, how would it transform our relationship with God? In this stimulating and thought-provoking book, internationally recognised teacher Richard Rohr explores the nature of God and the paradoxical idea of the Holy Trinity as both three and one. With clear, surefooted wisdom, he encourages us to build on the early Christian understanding of the relationship between Father, Son and Spirit as a flow and dance - a Divine Dance - that we are invited to join in. An engaging, accessible look at the nature of God, The Divine Dance will challenge the way you think about the Trinity and give you a much fuller understanding of the triune relationship that is at the heart of Christian doctrine. It will leave you with a faith that is renewed and strengthened, and show you how you can engage more deeply in your relationship with God and the world through the Trinity.

Book Finding Space

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ann Belford Ulanov
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 2001-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780664222697
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Finding Space written by Ann Belford Ulanov and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Finding Space, Ann Belford Ulanov argues that depth psychology in general and the work of D. W. Winnicott in particular offer vital new ways in which to apprehend religious life, especially Christian religious life. Her inspiration is rooted in Winnicott's influence on her work as an analyst and how his ideas have enriched her own Christian faith and religious understanding. In addition, Ulanov feels Winnicott's focus on the intensity of aliveness is an antidote to the plight of contemporary religion - that it can be passionless or rote, and thereby irrelevant to so many people. She expands Winnicott's concept of transitional space between self and other to apply to the space between the human and divine. She explores the importance of the "illusionist element" of God images in creative approaches to the divine. Other topics include the paradox transitional reality holds with subjective and objective notions Christians have of God; the inclusion of the body - specifically sexuality and aggression and the struggle for integration within the self - in the search for relationship with God; and the importance of the feminine. In an especially helpful appendix, Ulanov includes Winnicott's thoughts on matters pertinent to religious life and thought.
