This book was released on with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fouling occurs when marine microbes, plants, and animals, and/or their spores and larvae attach and grow on the hull of a boat or ship. If they survive the trip to a distant harbor, they may spawn, release spores, or be removed and discarded there. If they succeed in the new area, they may create problems.

Book Marine invasive species in the Arctic

Download or read book Marine invasive species in the Arctic written by Linda Fernandez and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2014-08-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arctic marine ecosystems are among the most productive and most vulnerable in the world, both from an economic and ecological perspective of growing accessibility. The complexity of Arctic marine ecosystems and their location poses challenges for management, valuation, and the establishment of sound policy to protect them. This special issue of Temanord presents papers from a workshop devoted to this topic. In October 2013, a group of multidisciplinary experts on marine invasive species and the Arctic came together in Esbjerg, DK for a two-day workshop titled: “Marine Invasive Species in the Arctic: Management Issues.” Attendees of the workshop came from academic, governmental and scientific institutions in Denmark and the Faroe Islands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Canada, and the United States. This volume presents papers based on the presentations of the workshop speakers.

Download or read book Boatsense written by Doug Logan and published by Seapoint Books. This book was released on 2019-07-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-known author and sailor, Doug Logan, sets down his rare commonsense approach to being on the water, with his accumulation of smart tricks from a lifetime of devotion to boating and sailing. In the warm voice of a deeply knowledgeable friend, Doug describes the thoughts of an experienced boat operator handling the boat as they head out into open water, like a cop on the beat, looking for trouble on the guages, in the ship channel, keeping the crew involved. He addresses the seamanship needed to safely and joyously operate a small boat. With a lifetime of experience on boats, Doug has his favorite and most basic must-haves on a boat, not necessarily the usual GPS or the radar: he has a knife close to hand, a selection of rope, a bucket, and he can inspire every sailor, even the saltiest dockrat, to know which simple tools to have aboard, on powerboats and sailboats alike. More than how-to go boating, Doug writes for people who love boats, particularly sailboats, and describes the skills and sensibilities that a life around boats can help develop--things like self-reliance, adaptability, a sense of balance between daring and humility, and an appreciation of our place in the grand scheme. His collection of yarns, prescriptions, lists, avowals, and explorations establishes a poetic reverence for the life in a small boat on the water.

Book Artificial Cilia

Download or read book Artificial Cilia written by Jaap MJ den Toonder and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cilia are tiny hairs covering biological cells to generate and sense fluid flow. Millions of years of evolution have inspired a novel technology which is barely a decade old. Artificial cilia have been developed to control and sense fluid flow in microscopic systems, presenting new and interesting options for flow control in lab-on-a-chip devices. This appealing link between nature and technology has seen rapid development in the last few years, and this book presents a review of the state-of-the-art in the form of a professional reference book. The editors have pioneered the field, having initiated a major European project on this topic soon after its inception. Active researchers in academia and industry will benefit from the comprehensive nature of this book, while postgraduates and those new to the field will gain a clear understanding of the theory, techniques and applications of artificial cilia.

Book Advances in Marine Antifouling Coatings and Technologies

Download or read book Advances in Marine Antifouling Coatings and Technologies written by Claire Hellio and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-05-22 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine biofouling can be defined as the undesirable accumulation of microorganisms, algae and animals on structures submerged in seawater. From the dawn of navigation, marine biofouling has been a major problem for shipping in such areas as reduced speed, higher fuel consumption and increased corrosion. It also affects industries using off-shore structures such as oil and gas production and aquaculture. Growing concerns about the environmental impact of antifouling coatings has led to major new research to develop more environmentally-friendly alternatives. Advances in marine antifouling coatings and technologies summaries this wealth of research and its practical implications. This book is divided into four sub-sections which discuss: marine fouling organisms and their impact, testing and development of antifouling coatings, developments in chemically-active marine antifouling technologies, and new surface approaches to the control of marine biofouling. It provides an authoritative overview of the recent advances in understanding the biology of fouling organisms, the latest developments on antifouling screening techniques both in the field and in the laboratory, research on safer active compounds and the progress on nontoxic coatings with tailor-made surface properties. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Advances in marine antifouling coatings and technologies is a standard reference for manufacturers of marine antifouling solutions, the shipping industry, oil and gas producers, aquaculture and other industries using offshore structures, and academics researching this important area. - Assesses marine antifouling organisms and their impact, including a historical review and directions for future research - Discusses developments in antifouling coatings examining chemically-active and new surface approaches - Reviews the environmentally friendly alternative of safer active compounds and the progress of non-toxic compounds
