Book Makarios

  • Author : Demetris Assos
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2018-08-30
  • ISBN : 1786724804
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Makarios written by Demetris Assos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Mikhail Makarios became head of the Church of Cyprus in 1950, Greek Cypriots presumed that he would lead the struggle for union with Greece - partly because the Church was perceived to be the custodian of this nationalist tradition. And though Archbishop Makarios III pursued this objective energetically, by 1959 he had signed the agreements that established an independent Cyprus republic – ending the dream of enosis and setting the scene for today's struggles to bring peace to the island. In this first English language biography of one of the most important figures in Cypriot modern history, Demetris Assos shows how Makarios oscillated between his personal nationalist romantic idealism and the management of hard political realities on the ground, and argues a nuanced understanding of this ambivalence is crucial to contextualise and explain his actions. Assos shows how, by the 1950s, the political authority of Makarios' position became intertwined with his spiritual power. He also unpicks the influence of the Orthodox Church on modern Cypriot history. A new analysis of the Cyprus experience, this is an essential addition to our understanding of the Cyprus problem, and a new portrait of one of the great Cypriots.

Book Realism and Human Rights in US Policy toward Greece Turkey and Cyprus

Download or read book Realism and Human Rights in US Policy toward Greece Turkey and Cyprus written by Sotiris Rizas and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this book is the interplay between Realism and Human Rights in the formulation of US policy towards Greece and Turkey with respect to the Cyprus and the Aegean disputes and the domestic politics of the two countries from the Truman to the Carter administration. The policies of successive administrations, and those of Johnson and Nixon in the 1960s and 1970s, were formulated upon the requirements of containment as this was conceived in 1946-47 by the Truman administration. Realpolitik dominated the agenda and issues related to values and norms were secondary although not unimportant. Whenever a choice had to be made between realpolitik and human rights the former was the main consideration of American policy-makers. Although committed to the recalibration of US foreign policy toward human rights, the Carter administration did not depart from these premises in the formulation of its policy in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Macarian writings are among the most important and influential works of the early Christian ascetic and mystical tradition. Marcus Plested deals both with their immediate historical and theological context and with their later influence and circulation - their 'legacy'. His book constitutes the first attempt to examine in detail and in the round the nature of that legacy within the Eastern Christian tradition. This is undertaken not so much as an exercise in source criticism as an exploration of the very nature and dynamic of the Christian paradosis. In short, Plested offers a timely reassessment of the 'place' of the writings in the Eastern Christian tradition, thereby clearing away some of the pre-conceptions that have hindered due appreciation of these remarkable works."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Greeks Books and Libraries in Renaissance Venice

This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does writing Greek books mean at the height of the Cinquecento in Venice? The present volume provides fascinating insights into Greek-language book production at a time when printed books were already at a rather advanced stage of development with regards to requests, purchases and exchanges of books; copying and borrowing practices; relations among intellectuals and with institutions, and much more. Based on the investigation into selected institutional and private libraries – in particular the book collection of Gabriel Severos, guide of the Greek Confraternity in Venice – the authors present new pertinent evidence from Renaissance books and documents, discuss methodological questions, and propose innovative research perspectives for a sociocultural approach to book histories.

This does not involve adapting information to a particular context, but rather establishing the context prescribed by God for the presence of Christ wherever we happen to be among the peoples of the world. Contextualization, then, creates a new invitational core context which is host to the presence of the divine person. This is defined with the help of the gifts of ecclesial Tradition, which enables conditions that facilitate communion, and which thus helps us engage the world.
