Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'the phony war' is often applied to the first months of the Second World War, a term suggesting inaction or passivity. That may have been the perception of the war on land, but at sea it was very different. This new book is a superb survey of the fierce naval struggles, from 1939 up to the invasion of the Norway in April 1940.??The author begins the book with the sinking of the German fleet at Scapa Flow in 1919 and then covers the rebuilding of the Kriegsmarine and parallel developments in the Royal Navy, and summarises relevant advances in European navies. The main part of the book then describes the actions at sea starting with the fall of Poland. There is a complex, intertwined narrative that follows. The sinking of Courageous, the German mining of the British East Coast, the Northern Patrol, the sinking of Rawalpindi, small ship operations in the North Sea and German Bight, the Altmark incident are all covered. Further afield the author deals with the German surface raiders and looks at the early stages of the submarine war in the Atlantic.??As with his previous books, Geirr Haarr has researched extensively in German, British, and other archives, and the work is intended to paint a balanced and detailed picture of this significant period of the war when the opposing naval forces were adapting to a form of naval warfare quite different to that experienced in WWI.

Book Der Seekrieg

    Book Details:
  • Author : Friedrich Ruge

  • Release : 1957
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 490 pages

Download or read book Der Seekrieg written by Friedrich Ruge and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprehensively reviews the conduct of the German sea war, from key political decisions down to significant individual ship actions. From the opening shots of the war, to the invasion of Norway and Battle of the North Atlantic, to the final, disastrous attempts to evacuate troops and civilians from Baltic enclaves, this book provides a consistent mix of fact and astute commentary. It addresses less decisive but no less significant topics, cataloging for instance, all German surface raider operations, U-boat journeys from Europe to the Far East, and esoterica such as secret German weather station detachment deployments to North America. Also of interest is the German reaction to the epic naval campaigns of the Pacific--keenly watched by the professionals of the Kriegsmarine staff. There is throughout the book a subtext of frustration--the frustration of the prophet who is without honor in his own land. Ruge and his fellow naval officers, who had been fed Mahan and Nelson with their professional mother's milk, were surrounded by Army peers and political masters who saw seas (when they saw them at all) as obstacles and defenses, instead of as highways and invasion routes. Therefore, in his first chapter, Ruge is careful to frame his argument with a short but clear discussion of maritime warfare principles, which dealing as it does with principles, is not dated though it was written a half-century ago.

Book excerpt: "In the vast literature of the Second World War there has never been a naval atlas showing graphically the complexities of the war at sea, a war which spread across every ocean. This new book will fill the gap. With more than 225 beautifully-designed maps and charts, the atlas sets out to visualise the great campaigns and major battles as well as the smaller operations, amphibious landings, convoys, sieges, skirmishes and sinkings. While whole sections are given over to the Pacific war, the battle of the Atlantic and the campaigns in the Mediterranean, smaller but crucial events such as the landings at Dieppe receive in-depth treatment. The maps depict the dynamics of campaigns and battles but also include extensive information on the opposing forces, their ships and equipment and the strategic significance of events. General thematic maps, for instance, on ship losses, aerial strengths or convoy routes, give the reader an understanding of the many contributing factors that shaped the tactics and strategies of the Allied and Axis forces. No other work has attempted such an ambitious coverage of the war at sea in this period and it is destined to become a definitive reference work for naval enthusiasts and historians as well as general readers fascinated by the naval war that extended from the coldest arctic seas to the tropical islands of the Pacific."--Back of book jacket.

Book excerpt: The award-winning historian’s acclaimed account of British sea power throughout WWII: “a must-read for anyone interested in Naval warfare” (PowerShips magazine). For four centuries the British realm depended on sea power to defend itself against a myriad of threats. The Royal Navy established itself as the “Sovereign of the Seas,” helping transform a small island nation into the center of a global empire. But Britain’s maritime services faced an unprecedented challenge during World War II, and the survival of the nation was at stake. The Longest Campaign tells the epic story of British sea power in the Second World War. It is a comprehensive and detailed account of the activities, results, and relevance of Britain’s maritime effort in the Atlantic and off northwest Europe. Military historian Brian Walter looks at the entire breadth of the maritime conflict, exploring the contribution of the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, and British merchant marines, as well as their Commonwealth equivalents. Walter puts the maritime conflict in the context of the overall war effort and shows how the various operations and campaigns were intertwined. Finally, he provides unique analysis of the effectiveness of the British maritime effort and role it played in Allied victory.

Book The Luftwaffe and the War at Sea 1939 1945

Download or read book The Luftwaffe and the War at Sea 1939 1945 written by David C. Isby and published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book was released on 2005 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Luftwaffe and the War at Sea provides an unrivaled look at struggle for control of the sea in the European theatre from the point of view of the German offices - Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe - that fought it. The contributing authors were involved in all aspects of German attempts to control the seas, from the use of Ju-87 Stuka dive-bombers in the invasion of Norway to the missions of FW-200 Kondors in cooperation with the U-boat campaign against Britain's Atlantic lifelines. These reports were either written as secret reports during the war for the benefit of the Oberkommando der Luftwaffe - the Air Force General Staff - or were written immediately after the war when most of the German High Command were prisoners of war or working for the US military. While they lacked the full story of the Allied efforts against them, these reports had the immediacy of either being prepared in wartime or soon afterwards. The book also benefits from having been written specifically for an audience well-versed in naval and aviation affairs: Luftwaffe generals or the US military. The detail contained is unique and allows the reader a fresh perspective on these famous campaigns.
