Book The United States of Soccer

Download or read book The United States of Soccer written by Phil West and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A brisk and informative look at Major League Soccer’s first twenty years . . . West gives MLS fans a worthy chronicle.” (Booklist). In 1988, FIFA decreed that the 1994 World Cup would be played in the United States – with the condition that the U.S. would start a new professional league. The North American Soccer League had failed just four years prior, and the prospects of launching a new league for Americans, who didn’t share the rest of the world’s love for soccer, were both exciting and daunting. The United States of Soccer is the engaging history of Major League Soccer’s bootstrap origins prior to its 1996 launch, its near-demise in the early 2000s, and its surprising resilience and growth as it won recognition from soccer fans around the world. The book also explores the origin of MLS’s superfans who set the tone within MLS stadiums and defining what it is to be a North American soccer fan. Phil West chronicles those fans’ voices – intermingled with league officials, former players and coaches, journalists, and newspaper accounts – to detail MLS’s remarkable journey.

Book Long Range Goals

Download or read book Long Range Goals written by Beau Dure and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-05-31 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world, soccer is known as “the Beautiful Game” and is the most popular sport. But in the United States, professional soccer still has a hard time catching on. It has had some successes here. The American Soccer League of the 1920s, Pélé and other international stars in the North American Soccer League's glamorous 1970s, the indoor soccer phenomenon of the 1980s, and the U.S. women's win in the Women's World Cup of 1999 all hinted that the American public is ready to embrace pro soccer. In its short history, Major League Soccer (MLS) has survived and even started to thrive, drawing steady crowds and loyal fans. In Long-Range Goals, Beau Dure profiles teams and players, including D.C. United, the Los Angeles Galaxy, Landon Donovan, Freddy Adu, and Coach Bruce Arena, who are all vital to MLS. Some of the triumphs include an expansion of the league and its ownership group, the contribution of MLS players to a strong U.S. World Cup showing in 2002, and the construction of soccer stadiums nationwide. At the same time, MLS has occasionally stumbled, during costly legal battles with players and seeing two teams fold, but its investors have remained strong, figured out how to make money, and support the league. From the league's formation in 1993 to the David Beckham era, this book reveals all the action on and off the pitch: the politics, the lawsuits, the management of its teams, and the savvy business deals that helped MLS rebound. It also revels in the big personalities of its stars, the grace of its utility players, and the obstacles the league faces in meeting its long-range goals.

Book Rock n Roll Soccer

Download or read book Rock n Roll Soccer written by Ian Plenderleith and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalist Ian Plenderleith's Rock 'n' Roll Soccer presents the raucous history of the hype and chaos surrounding the rapid rise and cataclysmic fall of the NASL. The North American Soccer League - at its peak in the late 1970s - presented soccer as performance, played by men with a bent for flair, hair and glamour. More than just Pelé and the New York Cosmos, it lured the biggest names of the world game like Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Eusebio, Gerd Müller and George Best to play the sport as it was meant to be played-without inhibition, to please the fans. The first complete look at the ambitious, star-studded NASL, Rock 'n' Roll Soccer reveals how this precursor to modern soccer laid the foundations for the sport's tremendous popularity in America today. Bringing to life the color and chaos of an unfairly maligned league, soccer journalist Ian Plenderleith draws from research and interviews with the men who were there to reveal the madness of its marketing, the wild expectations of businessmen and corporations hoping to make a killing out of the next big thing, and the insanity of franchises in scorching cities like Las Vegas and Hawaii. That's not to mention the league's on-running fight with FIFA as the trailblazing North American continent battled to innovate, surprise, and sell soccer to a whole new world. As entertaining and raucous as the league itself, Rock 'n' Roll Soccer recounts the hype and chaos surrounding the rapid rise and cataclysmic fall of the NASL, an enterprising and groundbreaking league that did too much right to ignore.

Book A League on Its Own

Download or read book A League on Its Own written by John Borland and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent decision by Major League Soccer (MLS) to turn down a lucrative media rights deal - one that is four times the size of its current deal - because of the stipulation that the league adopt a promotion and relegation system favored by other global soccer leagues lends itself to an interesting discussion about growth strategies for the still young but growing league. The league is hoping to expand to 28 teams and seems to be heading in the right direction. Team valuations are up, and fans are filling MLS stadiums regularly. But league television ratings still fall behind the English Premier League and Mexico's La Liga MX, and the operating incomes of teams are dwarfed by other U.S. professional sport franchises. International stars on the downside of their careers have provided some positive attention for the league by way of the "designated player" rule, but MLS is still considered a second-tier league by knowledgeable soccer fans. This case invites students to make suggestions about further growth strategies, one of which is an "open" league that considers promotion and relegation.

Book A Case Study of Major League Soccer

Download or read book A Case Study of Major League Soccer written by Adam R. Cocco and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of 2016, Major League Soccer (MLS) announced it will add four teams during the next five years. Two new expansion franchises will be granted in 2017, with another two announced in 2018. Based on increasing growth and demand, league executives believe this is the right time to expand to continue growing brand popularity and bring new media markets on board for upcoming media rights negotiations. In January 2017, 12 ownership groups applied for the next round of expansion. The ownership groups proposed teams in the following cities: Charlotte, NC; Nashville, TN; Indianapolis, IN; Detroit, MI; Phoenix, AZ; St. Louis, MO; Raleigh, NC; San Antonio, TX; Sacramento, CA; Cincinnati, OH; Tampa Bay, FL; and San Diego, CA. MLS will base its expansion decision on three key aspects: (a) an ownership group committed to spending resources for team-related developments; (b) strong local demographics and media markets; and (c) a comprehensive stadium plan for the long-term stability of the franchise. Each ownership group will fine-tune its case over the coming months. However, questions remain about which expansion groups present the strongest overall case for inclusion in the next wave of MLS expansion.

Book The Sound and the Glory

Download or read book The Sound and the Glory written by Matt Pentz and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique and comprehensive look at the Seattle Sounders franchise and its storied run for the Cup The Seattle Sounders were a sensation from the start, attracting crowds of sizes unlike any MLS team had ever seen. By the 2016 season, Seattle was averaging more than 42,000 fans per home game, the most of any soccer team in the Western Hemisphere, and more than behemoths like Chelsea F.C. and A.C. Milan overseas. But, for all of its early consistent success, Seattle had yet to actually win the league. In order to reach the ambitious goals the club set for itself, the Sounders needed the jolt of a championship. To get there would require tumult previously unknown to a club built on stability, a clash of egos, and a title run so unlikely it could hardly have been scripted. This is a Cinderella story for all MLS fans and every Sounder at heart.
