Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With World War II raging throughout Europe, the United States knew it needed to produce magnesium—the “miracle metal”—in prodigious quantities. Thousands of souls from across the United States heeded the call and traveled to Southern Nevada to build the world’s largest magnesium production plant. Living conditions were harsh in the parched desert encampment that some called Tent City. But the iron-willed men and women who answered the call would break all records in magnesium production. When the war ended, however, a mass exodus from the settlement left it on the brink of becoming just another ghost town. In this book, the author offers readers a front-row seat to the development of Henderson, Nevada. In plain, straightforward language, she examines the forces that propelled the small community through the war and how it continued to thrive into the twenty-first century. Whether you’re interested in World War II, the history of Nevada, or the history of Henderson in particular, this book reveals the powerful impact of a small desert town.

Book Environmental Social Justice Challenges Near America s Most Popular Museums Parks Zoos Other Heritage Attractions

Download or read book Environmental Social Justice Challenges Near America s Most Popular Museums Parks Zoos Other Heritage Attractions written by Michael Greenberg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines environmental and social justice challenges near America's most popular heritage attractions. These include over 100 places that host national parks (e.g., Glacier, Yellowstone), zoos (e.g., Bronx, Henry Doorly), urban parks (e.g., Central Park, Fairmount), grand concourses (e.g., 5th Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue), and multiple museums and galleries (e.g., National Gallery, Getty). The book includes measurements of demographics, air quality/distance from hazards, health outcomes, and urban assets in the areas immediately surrounding these heritage sites and compares them with adjacent areas and their host cities or states. It considers the history of justice-related-issues near the sites and evaluates what owners, managers and communities are doing to address gentrification, displacement, the legacy of redlining and other challenges, such as the animal rights movement, climate change/sustainability, and tight budgets. The book examines what some host cities are doing about affordable housing and what some heritage sites have done in establishing constructive relationships with surrounding communities. The book should have two primary audiences. One is the strong and growing social and environmental justice community that has increasingly been scrutinizing parks and other icons for evidence of injustice. This book will interest them, even though all the results do not necessarily support their positions. The second audience is businesses, not-for-profits, and government agencies who manage parks, zoos, museums, and other attractions and need to understand what is happening near their sites and what they can do to be better neighbours.

Book The Truth of the Russian Revolution

Download or read book The Truth of the Russian Revolution written by Konstantin Ivanovich Globachev and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2017-04-12 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eyewitness account of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and its aftermath, newly translated into English. Major General Konstantin Ivanovich Globachev was chief of the Okhrana, the Tsarist secret police, in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) in the two years preceding the 1917 Russian Revolution. This book presents his memoirs—translated in English for the first time—interposed with those of his wife, Sofia Nikolaevna Globacheva. The general’s writings, which he titled The Truth of the Russian Revolution, provide a front-row view of Tsar Nicholas II’s final years, the revolution, and its tumultuous aftermath. Globachev describes the political intrigue and corruption in the capital and details his office’s surveillance over radical activists and the mysterious Rasputin. His wife takes a more personal approach, depicting her tenacity in the struggle to keep her family intact and the family’s flight to freedom. Her descriptions vividly portray the privileges and relationships of the noble class that collapsed with the empire. Translator Vladimir G. Marinich includes biographical information, illustrations, a glossary, and a timeline to contextualize this valuable primary source on a key period in Russian history.

Book Remaking the City Street Grid

Download or read book Remaking the City Street Grid written by Fanis Grammenos and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-18 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the elements of a neighborhood, the pattern of streets and their infrastructure is the most enduring. Given the 20th century's additions to the range of transportation means--trains, subways, buses, trucks, bicycles, motorbikes and cars--all vying for space and effectiveness, a fresh look at the streets is warranted. This book contributes a new system of neighborhood design with a focus on contemporary planning priorities. Drawing lessons from historic and current development, it proposes a new pattern more fitting for modern culture, addressing such issues as walkability, mobility, health, safety, security, cost and greenhouse gas emissions. Case studies of national and international neighborhoods and districts based on the new network model demonstrate its application in real-world situations. Book excerpt: "Using direct observations of the surrounding landscape and the tangibel artifacts of the city, its topography, streets, temples and other stunning architectural monuments, Barry Bell carries out a progressive investigation into Bangkok's urban sensibility and its central mythologies - the more mysterious perceptual realms of allusion and illusion, arguably the real Bangkok, implicitly present within its deceptive exterior. In spite of the knowledge that, for many people, order seems alien to the city, the author searches for conceptual coherence. He strives to link the city's hectic urban sensibility to its more elusive and hidden character - the dream of Bangkok that is prompted by angelic allusions"--P. [2] of cover.

Book City

    Book Details:
  • Author : William H. Whyte
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2012-09-10

Download or read book City written by William H. Whyte and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named by Newsweek magazine to its list of "Fifty Books for Our Time." For sixteen years William Whyte walked the streets of New York and other major cities. With a group of young observers, camera and notebook in hand, he conducted pioneering studies of street life, pedestrian behavior, and city dynamics. City: Rediscovering the Center is the result of that research, a humane, often amusing view of what is staggeringly obvious about the urban environment but seemingly invisible to those responsible for planning it. Whyte uses time-lapse photography to chart the anatomy of metropolitan congestion. Why is traffic so badly distributed on city streets? Why do New Yorkers walk so fast—and jaywalk so incorrigibly? Why aren't there more collisions on the busiest walkways? Why do people who stop to talk gravitate to the center of the pedestrian traffic stream? Why do places designed primarily for security actually worsen it? Why are public restrooms disappearing? "The city is full of vexations," Whyte avers: "Steps too steep; doors too tough to open; ledges you cannot sit on. . . . It is difficult to design an urban space so maladroitly that people will not use it, but there are many such spaces." Yet Whyte finds encouragement in the widespread rediscovery of the city center. The future is not in the suburbs, he believes, but in that center. Like a Greek agora, the city must reassert its most ancient function as a place where people come together face-to-face.
