Book excerpt: Major and trace element contents have been measured for sanidine-glass pairs separated from eight high-SiO2 rhyolite lavas from the Yellowstone volcanic field. Sanidine/glass partition coefficients for most elements based on these data are uniform to within the cumulative analytical errors. This uniformity reflects similarities in major element compositions and inferred physical conditions for the analyzed samples, which are considered representative of most Yellowstone rhyolites. Of particular note are very high partition coefficients for Ba (~22), Sr (~28), and Eu (~9), relative to the sparse data for other rhyolites available in the literature. With the exception of Na, K, and Pb, which have sanidine/glass partition coefficients of approximately unity, all other elements determined are strongly fractionated into the melt phase relative to sanidine. These data may be used in modeling crystallization of sanidine from Yellowstone or other rhyolites or anatexis of crustal rocks containing sanidine (or K-feldspar sensu lato), but only with due caution. In particular, the wide range in reported partition coefficients for those elements (Sr, Ba, Eu) strongly incorporated in sanidine suggests that compositional and physical characteristics exert significant influence on these values. Accordingly, applicable partition coefficients are poorly known for these elements in most systems. Care must be taken to select appropriate values or to measure these partition coefficients directly in specific suites of rocks. Difficulties with direct experimental studies in silicic magmas seemingly preclude systemization of element partitioning at present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bedrock mapping in volcanic terrains is a challenge, and generally requires extensive field work and petrographic and geochemical analysis. Paleomagnetism, when used in conjunction with field, geochemical and petrographic data offers a complimentary geophysical tool to field mapping, assisting in the correlation of lava flows across faults and aiding in determination of fault kinematics. Secular variation of the Earth's magnetic field imprints individually distinguishable magnetic orientations in igneous rocks emplaced>100 years apart, resulting in magnetic fingerprints that can be used to correlate lava flows across eroded areas, or that have been displaced by faulting or modified by weathering. A successful paleomagnetic study requires establishment of a well constrained magnetic orientation for individual lava flows, against which structural corrections can be made for sample sites in rotated blocks. The resulting structural corrections provide insight into the mode and degree of movement along the fault since emplacement of the lava flows. This methodology was applied to mapping a tectonically modified Pliocene-Pleistocene volcanic edifice, Burney Spring Mountain, within the Hat Creek Graben of northeastern California. The establishment of a general range of paleomagnetic orientations for Burney Spring Mountain serves to distinguish between lava flows sourced from Burney Spring Mountain and those that overlap the edifice from surrounding volcanic vents. Paleomagnetic results have thus assisted in delineating the areal extent of Burney Spring Mountain and have furthermore revealed the presence of local block rotations adjacent to the fault, clarifying the kinematics of the faults themselves. Supporting geochemical analyses were conducted to assist in the correlation of Burney Spring Mountain lava flows involving the use of an electron-dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDS) outfitted scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a portable x-ray fluorescence (pXRF) device. Part of the geochemical approach was novel, using the SEM-EDS to target titanomagnetite crystals within studied lava flows; attempting to distinguish between the flows using the geochemistry of the crystals. This technique is typically applied to differentiating between tephra deposits. The combination of the paleomagnetic and geochemical data provided a means of correlating and differentiating the lava flows of ancestral Burney Spring Mountain volcano. The results, particularly from paleomagnetic data, strongly support a short growth period for ancestral Burney Spring Mountain volcano.^This has interesting implications for understanding the smaller monogenetic and polygenetic volcanism that define the Cascades magmatic axis. Ancestral Burney Spring Mountain volcano was a short-lived polygenetic stratovolcano that failed to achieve the size and maturity of the major stratovolcanoes that dominate the Cascade's skyline.

Book excerpt: This study focusses on the partitioning of trace elements between plagioclase, clinopyroxene and equilibrium melt. Such mineral/melt partition coefficients are widely used to model petrogenetic processes in igneous systems. However, theoretical considerations lead us to expect that the values of partition coefficients will change with many variables, including both mineral and melt compositions, as well as temperature and pressure. Plagioclase and clinopyroxene are two of the most common minerals in the Earth's crust and if we can understand what controls the partitioning of trace elements into common rock forming phases, we can more accurately model these processes. To examine the major controls of partitioning in plagioclase and clinopyroxene, these two phases were grown experimentally at controlled pressure, temperature and oxygen fugacity. These minerals were grown from a wide range of simple, synthetic systems, mostly focussing on variations in CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-Na2O±Fe2O3 (CMASN±F) compositional space. 102 successful experiments are included in this thesis, 57 of these contain clinopyroxene and melt, 76 contain plagioclase and melt and 34 of these experiments contain both plagioclase and clinopyroxene and melt. This allows for the partitioning of each phase with their equilibrium melt to be well constrained before comparing the partitioning between the solid phases. Melt composition is shown to play a significant role in the partitioning of trace elements in both phases, especially when the substituting trace element has a different charge to the element it replaces. Even-though melt composition plays a key role in the partitioning of trace elements in both phases, if the substitution and charge balancing mechanisms are the same in both minerals, the effect of melt composition will be cancelled out. Such is the case for the partitioning of the rare earth elements (REEs) between plagioclase and clinopyroxene. This is advantageous as in natural samples, the equilibrium melt is rarely preserved, so partitioning between the solid phases is much easier to measure than the mineral/melt partition coefficients. The partitioning of the REEs between plagioclase and clinopyroxene has been used to calibrate a geothermometer. The geothermometer has been applied to a selection of natural coexisting plagioclase and clinopyroxene pairs, with ambiguous results.
